Paffett (5 wins,
5 TQ) wins 2005 Series! |
 |
December 12 - Despite heroic
fighting of Mattias Ekström (Audi), winner of three rounds, Gary Pafett (Mercedes,
GB) won the 2005 DTM Series. He won 5 of the 11 rounds and was also 5 times
fastest qualifier. He scored 84 points against 71
points for Sweden's Ekström. Third place went to Tom Kristensen (DK) in a Team
Abt Audi A4 DTM, having finished at three occasions second and twice third. He
collected 56 points. By winning the last round, former multiple DTM-winner Bernd
Schneider (Mercedes, D) finished fourth, with 32 points, ahead of former F1
world champion Mika Hakkinen (Mercedes, SF) who won also one round. Sixth place
went to young Jamie Green (Mercedes, GB) who realised two pole positions and
finished twice on the podium. Seventh place went to France's Jean Alesi (Mercedes)
who won one round. First Opel racer was Heinz-Harald Frentzen who finished twice
third and finished eighth overall. Mercedes won eight of the eleven
rounds: five with Paffett, one with Alesi, Hakkinen and Schneider. Audi
won only three rounds, all three with Mattias Ekström. Opel won no round
at all, just as in the previous years. two third places, one fourth place and
three fifth places were the best 2005 results for Opel. MG was announced
earlier as a starter, but due to the bankruptcy of the firm, eventually no
British cars were seen at the start of the 2005 DTM Series.
Two racers collected no points during the whole season: Rinaldo Capello (who
collected two tenth places as personaql best) and Alexandros Margaritis, who was
once ninth. For former winner Laurent Aiello it were his last races in active
competition. A fourth place with the Team OPC Opel was his best 2005 result. [JPVR] |

January 9 - For international model
car racers DTM racing is important since, under the new IMCA rules, the
world championships of the upcoming years will be contested with DTM bodies.
It's still too early in the season to have any idea about the 2005 season.
What we already know is that Christijan Albers (NL) will be no longer there
in 2005, since he moves to F1 racing into the Minardi team. Rumours that the
very talented young Briton Gary Paffett should also make the move to F1
racing are not confirmed. The 2005 calendar has already be published.
Compared to last year theraces in Estoril (PT), at the Adria Raceway (I) and
at Brünn (CZ) has been dropped. New are rounds at the Spa-Francorchamps (B)
circuit in Belgium, at Moscou (RUS) and at Avignon (F) [During the season
Moscou will be replaced by Brno, Avignon by Lausitz]. The demonstration
race at Shangai (China) has been replaced by a round at Istambul (Turkey).
The two rounds at Hockenheim, and the rounds at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, at
Oschersleben, at the Norisring, at the Nürburgring and at Zandvoort remain
on the program. |

NO LESS THAN EIGHT AUDIS
IN DTM 2005 In 2005 Audi will
enter eight instead of six cars, all DTM-versions of the latest Audi A4.
Emanuele Pirro (I) and Frank Biela (D) are no longer in as Audi drivers. New
are Allan McNish (GB), Rinaldo Capello (I), Pierre
Kaffer (D) and Frank Stippler (D).
Mattias Ekström (S), Tom Kristensen (DK), Martin
Tomczyk (D) and Christian Abt (D) remain
as drivers. There will be two groups of four cars. The first group will be
made by four new 2005 cars under the direction of Abt Sportsline with
Ekström, Kristensen, McNish and Tomczyk as racers. The second group will be
made by four 2004 cars under the direction of Joest Racing. The efforts of
Audi Sport in the 2005 DTM will be co-ordinated by sports-director dr.
Wolfgang Ullrich. Confirmation of Ekström's title will be the first goal of
Audi. |

ALREADY FOUR WORKS DRIVERS CONFIRMED AT OPEL Opel Sportchef Volker
Strycek started already mid-December the first tests of the new Opel Vectra
GTS V8 at the circuit of Vallelugna. Test drivers were
Marcel Fässler (CH) and Manuel Reuter (D).
The new Russelheimer car, painted in black without sponsoring, completed
already 1,200 kms. Both racers and their team chef were happy with the
results. Last year Opel was not very competitive in the DTM series, since
not one single podium place could be conquerred - three fourth places on ten
rounds being the best results of the Russelheimer cars. For 2005 two other
works drivers have been confiremed: Laurent Aiello (F)
and Heinz-Herald Frentzen (D). It is not known
for the moment if Peter Dumbreck, Timo Scheider and Jeroen Bleekemolen will
be able to find a new wheel for 2005. |
