IMCA Nations Cup 2002 (Ostend, August 29-September 1)
IMCA WORLDS: THE ULTIMATE CARS

It's Sunday 6 p.m. Of the 67 Winston Cup Series Nascar cars, come from 16 different countries and from all 5 continents only 8 realised to move to the main final of the IMCA Worlds. Among the 8 ultimate cars we find  4 Chevrolets Monte Carlo: Poledna's n°55 Square D, Jan Korec's n°52, Malangone n°205 and Noviello's n°29. Two hours before the start the 2001 world champion decided to build a new and larger Chevrolet, allowing him to keep the four wheels within the body. Since there were no n° 24 decals available he was allowed to use the n°29 (which initially was Miskolci's). There were 3 Dodges Intrepid R/T: the n°19 Dodge Dealers of "Piki", the n°01 Cingular Wireless of Josef Korec ald the n°93 Amoco Ultimate of Horky. Eventually there was one Ford Taurus, the n° 7 Nations Rent of Geert Mertens.

At the Semis we lost the 3 Pontiacs (Montiglio's n°18, Van Oppens n°23 and Niccolai's n° 97), together with 2 Fords Taurus (Van Hoornaar's n°12 and the extremely fast but unreliable n°45 of Mario Schöne), with 2 Chevrolets Monte Carlo (Matti Fyhr's n°71 and Gridelets n°31) and 1 Dodge (Zenovitch's n° 92).

Äberg's fast Ford Taurus n°77 and Heymann's Pontiac n°10 were the 2 best ranked cars which missed the move to the Semis for only a couple of inches. That all means that the 18 fastest cars at the Worlds were 6 Chevrolets, 4 Dodges, 4 Fords and 4 Pontiacs, giving full evidence that all types of bodies allowed top ranks. In 2003 the small unequality between the bodies will be made even smaller by refusing the older and smaller types at the start. Pic: Stéphane Martin
