IMCA Nations Cup 2002 (Ostend, August 29-September 1)
THE "SHARK" MARQUEE

The 2002 Nations Cup went at a 25 x 16m marquee, installed at the parking of the Wellington Hippodrome (to see at the left). Earlier, in 1988 at Profondeville, the Nations Cup was already organised in a marquee. (1) Compared to last year there were several improvements: except for Paul Ciccarello, Dave Gick, Paul Gawronski and Brian Saunders, all the best racers of the world came this year at the start;  (2) There were less problems with the race direction than in 2001 since Bob Demeyer, Anco Stok and George Kimber did a great job on scrutineering. (3) There were no conflicts, except with one racer from Wallonia. Negative was (1) the fact that the IMCA Internet server was down so that the on-line emission was impssible; (2) also the fact that public attendance was less than last year; (3) last but not least that the press invitations came late so that the races went without the TV network. The marquee was sponsored by Shark Energy Drinks. We still wait on payment on their behalf. Next year, at Lede, the race will go with 48 instead of 72 racers, so that the schedule will no longer enforce us to night racing. The races will be again organised in a similar shark, now 30 x 16m.
