2008 ENDURANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

 Top event at 20th IMCA Worlds with 16 FIA GT 2008 cars   (8 GT1 & 8 GT2)

HERENTALS (B), JULY 23-24, 2008

March 31, 2007 - The 2nd ENDURANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP may be considered as the top event of the 2008 model car racing season. It will be contested with 16 FIA GT cars, being 1/24th scale models of the race cars having been seen at the 2008 FIA GT Series.  There will be three racers per car and at the start we'll find 8 GT1 cars, and 8 GT2 cars.
WHY 2008 FIA GT CARS? Initially it was planned to drive 2007 FIA GT cars. But then came round #2 of the EEC 2008. There was a lot of not justified commotion around the driveability of the track, resulting in the last minute withdrawal of no less than 5 cars. That withdrawal cost IMCA € 6,500 sponsoring money, since our conditional contract with 24 FIA GT cars at the start of all three EEC 2008 rounds was no longer respected. Main sponsors as AMC, GMAC, Techniplast,  ALRO and Total had even not one single car on the grid. The loss of € 6,500 was a serious blow for IMCA's finances. This money was needed to cover the high costs for the 20th IMCA Worlds. So we were enforced to find a new sponsoring deal, exclusively concerning the Enduro Worlds with FIA GT cars. The only solution to recuperate the largest part of the lost € 6,500 was a negotiation with new sponsors of 2008 FIA GT cars.
WHY 16 CARS INSTEAD OF 24? The decision to save the 20th IMCA Worlds with new sponsoring money, four months before the start, made it impossible to assemble 24 new cars in such short period. By opting for 8 GT1 and 8 GT2 cars, version 2008, we can at least ensure that the GT2 racers will have not to invest in new bodies, since IMCA will let assemble 8 RTR GT2 cars for those 24 racers. In GT1 one complete RTR car (for Tyler/Radisich/Hood) will be financed by IMCA, and two other teams (Racing for Slovakia and A.C.R. Racing) will receive a RTR 2008 GT1 body.
WHY 3 RACERS PER CAR INSTEAD OF 2?  Three racers per car allows more homoge-neous teams. Now Bad Boys, RfH, etc. are no longer split. With 3 racers per car we  one of ythem can always fuction as marshall.
WHY NO PRESIDENT'S CUP WITH GALLARDOS? On racing 2008 FIA GT cars, one week earlier than the 1/1 Spa 24 hours, we can get no info if there will be in 2008 trios of Gallardos and JMB Ferraris as last year. So it's impossible to improvise any potential 1/24th President's Cup.
QUALIFICATIONS go over three heats of 8 x 3 minutes. Best qualifier per group (GT1 and GT2) can choose as first the lane on which he or she wants to start.
3 SECTIONS OF 8 x 30 MINUTES - The two races will go over three sections of 8 x 30 minutes, with per group (GT1 & GT2) a first day section, a night section, and a second day section.
PRO & SEMI PRO WORLD CHAMPIONS - Pros (EXPERTS & KIDS with more than 50 IOC points) race in GT1, Semi-pros (AMATEURS & KIDS with less than 50 IOC points) race in GT2. That makes that at the end of the event we'll crown six new world champions: 3 among the pros and 3 among the semi-pros.
The 2nd Endurance Worlds will be contested on the wooden Steve HOUR RACES Ogilvie MTT 8-laner as used already last year. Location is Nieuwstraat 31 at B-2200 Herentals. A good hotel is Hotel "Aldhem", Jagersdreef 1, B-2200 Grobbendonk (the former Moneytron Hotel I let be constructed in my F1 period)At walking distance of he race location there are two other hotels. Racers have to do the reservations themselves. More....

The Endurance World Championship was organised for the first time at the 1988 IMCA Worlds in Chicago. It was a close struggle among Franco Gianotti/Corinna Gianotti and Dan Debella/JPVR. Eventually we finished behind the Italians. The Endurance Worlds were no more organised. So the 2008 Endurance World Championship is only the second edition in history.
POWER RESTRICTORS - The supremacy of the Saleens S7R and Maseratis MC12, observed in the past, will be tempered by the obligation that those cars must be driven with a minus 0.6 Volt power restrictor.

SHORT REPORT ON THE 2007 TOTAL SPA 24 HOURS

ENTRY - Of the 50 cars seen at the start only 14 were of class GT1. Among them we found four competitive Maseratis (the two Vitaphones and the two Sarafrees), three competitive Corvettes (the Luc Alphand C6R with #3, the Car Sport Holland C6R with #5 and the Peka Racing C5R with #4), three Aston Martins DBR9 (two of BMS Italia and one of Jetalliance) and two Lamborghinis Murciélago R-GT. The SRT Corvette C6R and JMB Maserati were at the start, but without chance on an overall victory. Absent were the PSI Corvette, the second JMB Maserati and the Jetalliance #36 Aston. In GT2 we find seven Ferraris F430 and six Porsches 997. The second Edil Cris Ferrari F430 GT2 is absent. The rest of the field is filled by G2 and G3 cars. Last but not least there are three JMB Ferraris F430 GT3 and three S-Berg Racing Lamborghinis Gallardo GT3 fighting for the Coupe du Roi. The Ferraris have the numbers 201A, 201B and 201C. The Lambos have the numbers 215A, 215B and 216C.

QUALIFICATIONS - There are three qualification sessions, one of 60 minutes, one of 90 minutes and one of 45 minutes. In GT1 the fastest time is realised by Mike Hezemans (NL) on the #5 Corvette C6R: 2'14"554. Second best time is for Karl Wendlinger (A) in the #33 Jetalliance Aston Martin DBR9. Third time goes to Oliver Gavin (GB) on the #3 Luc Alphand Corvette, and this in his real first flying lap. Gavin was no more seen on the Spa track since a F3000 race in 1999. Then follow the #11 Sarafree Maserati, the #1 Vitaphone Maserati, the Dutch #28 Lamborghini Murciélago, the second Vitaphone Maserati, the Belgian #4 Corvette C5R and the second Sarafree Maserati. Very disappointing are the BMS Astons qualifying as 11th and 14th. The last named, the #23, made a spectacular crash, but can be restored before the start. Disappointing too is the #7 Lambo of Christophe Bouchut (F), realising only the 12th time after a series of ignition problems. In GT2 Gianmaria Bruni (I) is the fastest in the AF Corse Ferrari F430 GT2, followed by Emmanuel Collard (F) in the #97 Porsche 997 and Paolo Ruberti (I) in the #52 Ferrari.

The largest part of the race was contested under heavy rain during the whole night and nearly the complete Sunday.

HOURS 1 - The track is dry for the start with dark clouds. Marcel Fassler (CH) is fasted away with the #5 Corvette. Into Eau Rouge Oliver Gavin (GB) in the #3 Corvette can pass Karl Wendlinger (A) and his #33 Aston for the second place. At the Bus Stop Gavin can out brake Fassler to pass as first after the first lap. The Dutch #28 Lambo comes into the pits with a broken drift shaft. During the 10 first laps we note a severe struggle between Gavin and Fassler for first position, with no less than three lead changes. The Dutch Lambo is still in the garage. In GT2 Patrick Long (USA), in the #76 Imsa Matmut Porsche can pass Gianmaria Bruni (I) who was leading the class during the 10 first laps in his #51 AF Corse Ferrari.
After 13 laps Enrico Toccacelo (I) pulls off at Pouhon with electrical problems and the #22 BMS Aston Martin is already out for the rest of the race. Max Busnelli (I) cannot avoid a collision with one of the Coupe du Roi GT3 Ferraris and limps into the pits with a broken rear suspension. The #12 Sarafree thus drops in the standings. Christophe Bouchut (F) is also involved in the accident and is immobile in the garage.
After 20 laps Fassler (#5 Corvette) leads Gavin (#3 Corvette) and Wendlinger (#33 Maserati) by res. 5 and 7 seconds. Then follows Andrea Bertolini (I) in the second Vitaphone Maserati. A half minute down Bert Longin (B) in the #4 Corvette C5R leads a trio ahead over Peter Lamy (PT) in the #11 Maserati and Philip Peter (A) in the #16 JMB Maserati. The Dutch Lambo rejoins the track before the end of the first hour, but Bouchut's Lambo is still in the garage. The #23 BMS Aston is already more than one minute down tp the leaders after the first hour (8th). Due to the pit stops for refuelling the #33 Aston leads after the first hour. In GT2 the #76 Imsa Matmut Porsche always leads the two AF Corse Ferraris.

The BMS Astons had not their week end at Spa. The #23 was heavily damaged after the first qualification session, and the #22 was already out after only 10 laps. The #23 could be restored for the race but had to retire after 15 hours, having never been higher ranked than sixth.

HOURS 2 TO 6 - In front Fassler (#5 Corvette) is widening the gap with the rest of the field. After 90 minutes his advance over Pier Guidi (I) in the #11 Sarafree Maserati is 23 seconds. Jeroen Bleekemolen (NL) comes into the pits with again a broken drive shaft on the #28 Lambo. The Vitaphone Maseratis are 6th and 7th, but Jamie Davies (GB), in the #23 Aston, is loosing ground on them. The Jetalliance Aston can pass Pier Guidi's Maserati for the second place, just before the end of hour two. Oliver Beretta (MC) is fourth in the #3 Corvette. At the end of the second hour Fassler, having done a double stint, looses the lead in the pits, offering the first place to the #1 Vitaphone Maserati, followed by the Jetalliance Aston and the #11 Sarafree Maserati. In GT2 the two AF Corse Ferraris are now leading the #76 and #97 Porsches.
During the third hour Fabrizio Gollin (I) brings the #5 Corvette again into the lead. The class leading #50 AF Corse Ferrari of Dirk Muller (D) goes off and the sister car takes the lead in GT2. A front left puncture on the #76 Porsche, just after leaving the pits, makes the car loosing several places. Meanwhile Anthony Kumpen (B) succeeds to take the third place with the #4 Corvette C5R, following Gollin in the #5 Corvette C5R by one minute and Robert Lechner (A) in the Jetalliance Aston at only two seconds. Just before the end of hour 3 Chris Niarchos (CDN) and the #63 Ecosse Ferrari are involved in an accident and the safety car comes on the track. At the restart Kumpen can catch the lead, followed by the Austrian Aston and the #11 Sarafree Maserati. In GT2 the #97 Porsche takes the lead, ahead over the #51 AF Corse Ferrari. It's raining now and there is heavy traffic in the pits. After  hours the Belgian Corvette C5R is still leading. Eric van de Poele (B) goes off at Les Combes with the #1 Vitaphone Maserati and looses an entire lap. During the sixth hour the Belgian Corvette looses two laps on brake problems, related to Fred Bouvy's off at the warm-up. The Austrian Aston leads after 6 hours, followed at 2'15" by the #11 Maserati of Bertolini and at 2'21 by the #5 Corvette. There are only three cars on the lead lap. The #16 JMB Maserati lost its door and drops in the standings into 11th position, even headed by the #97 Porsche 997, leading GT2.

Sunday morning. It's still raining. The field passes the Austrian #33 Aston Martin which get off the evening before, when the car was leading.

HOURS 7 TO 12 - At 21h52 it's raining the proverbial cats and dogs and the safety car comes out when Tomas Enge (CZ) hits the tyre wall with his #62 Ecosse Ferrari (being 17th at that time and 5 laps down to the class leading #97 Porsche). We have to wait 30 minutes before yellow goes off. Just after the Austrian #33 Aston Martin spins off and is out of the race. Andrea Bertolini (I) is the new leader in the #11 Sarafree Maserati, but will be passed by Jean-Denis Deletraz (CH) and his #5 Corvette C6R in the next hour. Diego Alessi (I) is in the gravel with the lonely surviving Aston. The car will drop from 7th into 14th position.
After 9 hours of racing the #5 Corvette, with Fassler at the wheel, leads the #11 Sarafree Maserati of Pier Guidi by one minute. One lap down we find three cars: the #2 Vitaphone Maserati, the #1 Vitaphone Maserati and the #4 Belgian Corvette C5R. The Luc Alphand Corvette follows at 2 laps in 6th position. As 7th, at 6 laps, we find the #18 S.R.T. Corvette with Maxime Soulet (B) at the wheel. Marc Lieb (D) leads GT2, followed at one lap by Rui Aguas (PT) in the #51 AF Corse Ferrari and at 3 laps by Raymond Narac (F) in the #76 IMSA Matmut Porsche. In the #23 BMS Aston Jamie Davies (GB) is climbing up in the standings, being 11th after 10 hours, but then suffers from electrical woes, dropping the car again in 17th position. On the #28 Lambo the crew changes its umpteenth drive shaft. Rain is heavier than ever during the night. At mid-race, at 04h00 in the morning, Mike Hezemans (NL) leads with the #5 Corvette C6R, followed at one lap by Thomas Biagi (I) in the #1 Vitaphone Maserati and Fabrizio de Simone (I) in the #11 Sarafree Maserati. The #2 Vitaphone Maserati and the #4 Peka Corvette C6R follow at 2 laps, the #3 Alphand Corvette C6R at 4 laps, the S.R.T. Corvette C5R at 8 laps, and the #16 JMB Maserati (with a new door) at 12 laps. In the #97 BMS Porsche 997 Emmanuel Collard (F) has now 2 laps over Stéphane Ortelli (F) in the #51 AF Corse Ferrari and 3 laps over Patrick Long (USA) in the #76 Imsa Matmut Porsche 997. The repaired #12 Sarafree Maserati is 15th at 21 laps, Davies (BMS Aston) 17th at 27 laps.

After the withdrawal of their fastest car, AF Corse could follow during 12 hours the GT2 leading BMS Porsche at one or two laps.

HOURS 13 TO 24 - Rain seems to stop. The #18 SRT Corvette C5R hits the barriers and drops in the standings from 7th to 13th. Dawn is showing the first signs at 05h00 when the #28 Lambo is definitively out. For the Coupe du Roi the Gallardos are also out now, so that the #201 Ferraris will win that cup. At 6h50 the last Aston disappears from the table when the #23 spins off, under new torrential rain, at Blanchimont. Fassler (#5 Corvette) leads Bartels (#1 Maserati) by one lap, and Ramos (#2 Maserati) and Bouvy (#4 Corvette) by two laps. The #11 Maserati is recovering from a puncture at 5 laps. Under typical Spa weather conditions (torrential rain, heavy wind and thick mist) Fabrizio Collin (I) can not only undo his lap arrear on Pedro Lamy (PT) and even pass his #5 Corvette before the end of the 18th hour. The #51 AF Corse Ferrari, having been during 12 hours second in GT2 goes off and is at once out for the rest of the race. Problems for the #3 Corvette, hurting debris at Eau Rouge, and loosing seven laps in the pits after a puncture and body damage. There is so much water on the track that the safety car is out. The screens flash up the message that “The Safety Car Will Continue Until The Race Director Considers Safe” Fair enough, this could take a while!"
We have to wait 75 minutes
before green is on, with 4h45 left. After three laps on green Fassler reduced his arrears on Thomas Biagi in the leading #1 Maserati. The other Vitaphone passed the Belgian #4 Corvette for third. The rain is getting harder when around noon Fassler spins off, loosing 15 seconds. The safety cars show again on the poured wet track. There are still four hours to go. After 30 minutes rain has eased off and the clouds have lifted. In the leading #1 Vitaphone Maserati Eric van de Poele (B) - last year's hero and winner - can lap the #5 Corvette as soon as green is on. With 3 hours to go Matteo Bobi (I) is third at 4 laps in the other Vitaphone Maserati, immediately followed by Kurt Mollekens (B) in the #4 Peka Corvette C5R. Bertolini in the #11 Sarafree Maserati follows at 5 laps, Oliver Beretta (MC) - now fastest man on the track - is 6th at 11 laps. We have still 2 hours to go and rain is again coming down in stair rods, so that the safety cars are again out. When at 14h30 green goes on Fassler is just behind Van de Poele, ready to unlap. Kumpen can pass Montenari (#2 Vitaphone Maserati) to go into third. With 65 minutes of the race to run race leader Eric van de Poele, leading by over 2 minutes 30 seconds, loses the back end of the #1 Maserati turning into Stavelot. The car runs off backwards into the gravel trap and is stuck fast. Marcel Fassler makes the necessary progress to pass the site of EvdP’s misfortune whilst the MC12 is still being towed out of the gravel. Eric makes his way gingerly back to the pits where Pedro Lamy is waiting to take over. At no avail, since a superb Fassler keeps the #5 Corvette C6R on the lead until the finish. The #1 Maserati finishes at 1'18". Peka Racing is third at 3 laps. GT2 is won by the #97 BMS Porsche ahead over the #76, #99 and #74 Porsches. First Ferrari, Edil Cris's #52 is only fifth in its class.

Lamborghini had a sad time at the Spa 24 hours. Their #7, with Christophe Bouchut, was already out after 83 laps, whilst the #28 was found more in the garage than on the track with repeated drive shaft bothers. The #215 Lambo Gallardo was out at mid-race.
