3.0 PORSCHE 908 (1968-1970)

HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 908-01

There is a lot of confusion around the 3.0 Porsche 908, due to the fact that there are not 3 (908-01, 908-02, 908-03) but 5 types.  Indeed the 908-01 existed in long tail and in short tail versions, res. as 908-01LH and 908-01K; the 908-02 existed also in 2 versions, res. 908-02 and 908-02LH. Several of those cars were raced until the 1980s in a variety of types. Here I restrict myself to the versios having been raced in 1968, 1969 and 1970.
Until 1968 the Porsches 904GTS, 906P and 906S were always underdogs in racing, except at the twisty tracks of the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring. In all other rounds of FIA's Manufacturer's World Championship the 2-litre cars of Zuffenhausen were dominated by the 4-litre Ferraris 330P3 and 330P4, or by the 7-litre Fords Mk2 and Mk4. Nevertheless, already in 1967, Ferrari had to struggle until the last round to beat Porsche for the Manufacturer's Worlds. When, mid-1967, the CSI decided to ban the over 3-litre prototypes from the track, Porsche at once saw a chance to win for the first time also other rounds than the Targa Florio or the Nürburgring 1,000-kms. Even winning Le Mans was at once a possibility. The lonely over 3-litre cars left in competition were the sports cars, owned by privateers, and having been manufactured at 50 copies (later reduced to 25 copies) such as the 4.7 Ford GT40 and the 5.0 Lola T70Mk3B.
Under the new racing responsible - Ferdinand Piech, nephew of Ferry Porsche and, among others, father of the famous 'plastic' Porsche 909 used at the European Hill Climb Championship - a new racing strategy was followed. Porsches were built in fuction of concrete races, and after those races sold to privateers and replaced by new copies. First thing to do by the end of 1967 was to develop a 3-litre prototype, since the 'biggest' prototype was the 2.2 Porsche 907, for the first time raced at Le Mans and Brands Hatch, the last 2 rounds of the 1967 Manufacturer's Worlds. The car existed in a long tail and short tail version. In 1968 the flat 8 was coupled to the 6-gang 907 gearbox, in 1969 to a new 5-gang box. Crankshaft vibrations caused alternator problems in 1968, but were solved after the 1969 Daytona débâcle, where the 5 entered cars were retired with a broken crankshaft.

"Porsche had started designing a full three liter eight cylinder engine in July of 1967. This was significant, because for the first time in its history as a car maker the firm had planned an engine to suit the largest size allowed a prototype sports racer. ... The 908 was the first car that put Porsche on even terms with the opposition in the fight for overall (not class) victories. Prior to the 908, Porsche was usually the underdog. After the 908 appeared Porsche was in a position to become the overdog which in due course it did."
The 907 was the first competition Porsche to display the teardrop body shape which Porsche went on to use in the new 3-litre Porsche 908-01LH. Motor was a flat-8 developping 320 HP in its first concept, 350 HP in a later stage. The new car was raced a first time at the Monza 1,000-kms of 1968, where it obtained the 2nd place at the qualifications.
Unfortunately for Porsche John Wyer decided to rejuve-nate the old 4.9 Ford GT40 Coupe after FoMoCo decided to quit the Manufacturer's World Championship. Contrary to his own Mirage or to Allan Mann's new 3-litre Ford the JWA Gulf GT40 was a dangerous contender for victory.
At the Nürburgring 1,000-kms the new 908-01 was entered in its short tail version and won the race.  A second win was scored at the Österreichring 1,000-kms with the same car having failed to finish at Watkins Glen. No less than 4 Porsches 908-01 were entered at Zeltweg, one of them finishing as runner-up. For the Le Mans 24 hours - reported to September instead of June, due to the Paris students revolt - Ferdinand Piech ordered construc-tion of 4 new cars. They realised a 1-2-3 on the grid, but were beaten by the JWA Gulf Ford GT40. In 1969 the 908-01 was severly defeated at the Daytona 24 hours, but won both at the Monza 1,000-kms and the Francorchamps 1,000-kms. Meanwhile the new Porsche 917 was ready, so that the 908-01 had no longer to play a first class role in competition. At Le Mans 1969 a 908-01 failed for ...120 metres to win, after both 917s abandoned. Two 908-01s were transformed in 908-02 spyders for 1970: Steve McQueen's and Gesipa's. The McQueen 908 spyder finished 2nd at the Sebring 12 hours, after a nearly hopeless pursuit of Andretti's Ferrari 512S, which could catch the 908 during the last minutes to win the race.

3.0 PORSCHE 908-01

NÜRBURGRING 1,000-KMS 1968: First victory for the 3.0 Porsche 908-01K - chassis 008 - shared by Jo Siffert and Vic Elford, at the qualifications still dominated by a 2.2 Porsche 907K. PICTURES: Manfred Förster & Udo Kinkel.

NÜRBURGRING 1,000-KMS 1968: The Mitter/Scarfiotti Porsche 908-01K - chassis 009 - having qualified as 3rd, was already retired after 3 laps with a chassis failure. PICTURE: Manfred Förster.

NÜRBURGRING 1,000-KMS 1968 - The Porsche 907K of Hans Hermann and Rolf Stommelen TQ-ed and finished 2nd. If one compares this picture with the one above one sees that the 908-01 was very inspired by the 907. However, position of the driver in the 908-01 was closer to the front and the nose of the 908-01 was shorter than on the 907. PICTURE: Manfred Förster.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1968 - The Porsche 908-01LH - chassis 013 - of Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Neerpasch - chassis 013 - finished as 3rd, 6 laps down to the winning 4.9 JWA Gulf Ford GT40 of Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi. A former factory Porsche 907LH, sold to Squadra Tartaruga finished as 2nd, 5 laps down to the winning GT40. End 1969 the car was re-bodied as a 908 spyder and sold to Gesipa Racing.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1968 - The same car - chassis 015 - during the race. Some publicity decals of Dunlop, Shell and Bosch were added. During the first hours the car was leading the race. A broken transmission and clutch bothers made that after 4 hours the lead was going over to the Paul Hawkins/David Hobbs JWA Ford GT40. Later the 908-01LH of Joe Buzetta and Scooter Patrick (nr 34) could take the lead back, but problems with the alternator after 115 laps brought the Rodriguez/Bianchi JWA Gulf Ford GT40 definitively in the first place. PICTURE: Sport Auto (French edition), #82, p. 46.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1968 - The Porsche 908-01LH with chassis 016 of Gerhard Mitter and Vic Elford qualified as 3rd , but was disqualified after 111 laps after an illegal alternator change.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1968 - The Porsche 908-01LH with chassis 014 of Joe Buzetta and Scooter Patrick is leading immediately after the start the 3.0 Alpine A220 (nr 27) of Mauro Bianchi/Patrick Depailler and the Belgian 4.9 Ford GT40 of Willy Mairesse/Jean Blaton. None of those cars reached the finish.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1968 - Again the Porsche 908-01 LH - chassis 014 - heading the Lolas T70Mk3B of Jackie Epstein/ Edward Nelson and Ulf Norinder/Sten Axelsson. The alternator problems, met on 3 of the 4 Le Mans cars where the result of the crankshaft-induced torsional vibrations. PICTURE: Rafa.

MONTLHÉRY 1,000-KMS 1968 -

DAYTONA 24 HOURS 1969 - Despite the strict cost controls installed end 1968 by Ferry Porsche, his ambitious nephew, Ferdinand Piech, ordered Hans Metzger to build 5 new Porsches 908-01LH in view of the Daytona 24 hours where one year earlier Porsche scored a 1-2-3 with its 2.2 907LH. On the new cars the flat 8 was coupled no longer to the old 6-gangs 907 gearbox, but to the new 5-gang box. Although a 1-2-3 was realised on the grid, none of the 5 new Porsches reached the finish, all being victims of crankshaft failures. Here the 908-01LH with chassis 022 eliminated after 313 laps. Later the car was re-bodied as a short tail Flunder and updated to 02 specifications by the Porsche factory. The re-bodied 908-02 was still carrying chassis plate 908#022 on delivery. Modifications were completed on November 28, 1969 and the car was delivered in the United States for Solar Productions - the producers of the famous Le Mans movie with Steve McQueen - on December 12, 1969.

DAYTONA 24 HOURS 1969 - The Porsche 908-01LH with chassis 025 was shared by Udo Schütz, Richard Attwood and Gerhard Mitter before being retired after 483 laps with a broken camshaft drive.
DAYTONA 24 HOURS 1969 - The Joachim Bonnier/Ulf Norinder 5.0 Lola T70Mk3B sandwiched between 2 Porsches 908-01LH, res. with chassis 023 (#50) and chassis 024 (#52). The last car, shared by Vic Elford and Brian Redman, realised the pole position. Both cars were eliminated with a broken camshaft drive. PICTURE: Sport Auto (French edition), #86, p. 77.
MONZA 1,000-KMS 1969 - Immediately after the Daytona débâcle all engines of the 908-01LH were revisited. Here the car with chassis 026, having been raced with #51 at Daytona (where it retired). Driven by Vic Elford and Brian Redman the car won the Monza 1,000-kms. Later the same car finished as 3rd at the Francorchamps 1,000-kms.
MONZA 1,000-KMS 1969 - The Porsche 908-01LH with chassis 027 was one of the 2 new cars built in function of the Monza 1,000-kms. Shared by Udo Schütz and Gerhard Mitter the car was retired after 38 laps with a blown engine.
FRANCORCHAMPS 1,000-KMS 1969 - After having failed at the Daytona 24 hours the Porsche 908-01LH with chassis 026 was entered at the Belgian circuit where, in hands of Vic Elford and Kurth Ahrens it finished 3rd.
FRANCORCHAMPS 1,000-KMS 1969 - Having been retired at Daytona and having finished 2nd at Monza, the Porsche 908-01LH was entered in 1969 a third time at the Manufacturer's World Championship - a big exception in Ferdinand Piech's racing strategy. It seems that he tried to prove that the Daytona débâcle, earlier that year, was just an accident, since also another Daytona car (with chassis 026 - picture above) was entered 3 times. Here the car with chassis 025 which won the race with Jo Siffert and Brian Redman as drivers.
LE MANS 24 HOURS 1969 - Probably the best known Porsche 908-01LH, the car with chassis 031, which after an heroic combat with the 4.9 JWA Gulf Ford GT40 of Jacky Ickx/Jackie Oliver lost Le Mans for a few ...120 meters. Doing the last stint, poor Hans Hermann - who shared the car with France's Gérard Larousse - was involved in the combat of his life to hold Jacky Ickx behind. He succeeded to hold the lead until 5 minutes before the finish. After the race the desillusion for Porsche was complete. Never the pround make of Zuffenhausen was so close to win Le Mans. The consolation was that Porsche - having lost the Manufacturer's Worlds by 2 points from Ferrari in 1967 and by 3 points from Ford in 1968 - won this year convincingly the Manufacturer's World Championship. PICTURE: Rafa.
LE MANS 24 HOURS 1969 - Perhaps the most blessing picture of a racing Porsche: Hans Hermann comes 120 metres short to win Porsche's first Le Mans 24 hours. PICTURE: L'Année Automobile 1969-1970, Lausanne: S.A. Edita, 1969, p. 172.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1969 - The car of Udo Schütz/Gerhard Mitter with chassis 030 was eliminated by accident after 199 laps.

LE MANS 24 HOURS 1969 - For Le Mans, where the 2 entered work's Porsches 917 are the main weapon of Zuffenhausen, Ferdinand Piech let built 3 new 3.0 Porsches 908-01LH. Here the car with chassis 029 shared by Willi Kauhsen and Rudi Lins. The car was retired after 317 laps with a broken gearbox. In 2 years Porsche built no less than 32 copies of the 908-01, 4 of them having won major races at the 1968-1969 Manufactuer's World Championship.

3.0 PORSCHE 908-02

HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 908-02

From mid-1968 to end 1970 Porsche AG built no less than 28 spyders of its 908, labelled 3.0 Porsche 908-02. They were raced the first time in 1969 at the Sebring 12 hours, and except for the twisty Targa Florio and Nürburgring, they were intended to back-up the new and more powerful Porsche 917. The 908 was a sensuous car featuring a short, cut-away tail section.
Initially, in 1969, the new 908-02 suffered from chassis problems: of the 5 brand new cars entered at Sebring, 2 were retired with a cracked chassis. But the next race, at Brands Hatch, 4 other brand new Porsches 908-02 finished as 1st, 2nd, 3rd an 6th after the chassis bothers were solved. At the Targa Florio the cars did it over, realising again a 1-2-3 and adding now even the 4th place. Of the 6 entered work's cars - completely in the line of Ferdinand Piech's racing policy - 4 were again brand new.
A third major win by the Porsche 908-02 was realised in 1969 at the Nürburgring 1,000-kms. Of the 6 entered cars - among them only 2 new copies (was Ferdinand Piech ill that day?) - all 6 reached the finish, scoring now an unbelievable 1-2-3-4-5-31.
At Le Mans all Porsche efforts went to the 917s and the 908-01LHs. Jo Siffert, hating the long tail coupes, preferred to drive an open 908-02LH. Here the rear section of the body was no longer curbed as on the short tail spiders. Later, Tony Lapine, Porsche's then head designer, would flatten the topside of the spyders to create the 908-02 "Flounder," a car that was the basis for the 917 Can-Am and 917K endurance models. But, in fact, Siffert's Le Mans car, entered hy Hart Ski, was the first Flunder in history. The car qualified as 3rd, just behind the 2 Porsches 917LH, but ahead of all Porsches 908-01LH. It was even leading the race during 2 hours, until the gearbox was broken.

Forgotten by most autosport historians, as the underdog to the mighty Porsche 917, the 908-02 was a fantastic car. At the Watkins Glen 6 hours it realised again a 1-2-3, already the 4th round won by a 908 spyder (the second by Porsche Salzburg, having already won at the Nürburgring). Meanwhile Tony Dean, the British Porsche importer, entered it at 8 rounds of the CANAM, finishing each round it entered.
By the end of the 1969 Porsche AG sold several of its Porsches 908-02 - some of them transformed in Flun-ders with a flat rear body - to privateers. The car having finished 3rd at Brands Hatch went first to Écurie Ever-green, later to Bosch Racing for the total unknown Niki Lauda; the car having finished 2nd at Brands Hatch and 3rd at the Nürburgring went to Sports Cars Broström from Sweden; the car having finished 2nd at the Targa went to Alex Soler-Roig; the car having finished 5th at the Austrian GP went from Porsche Austria to Asahi-Pentax Racing. The car having finished 7th at Sebring went to Martini International; the car having finished 2nd at the Nürburgring went to German BG Racing; the winner of Brands Hatch (also 4th at the Targa and 5th at the Nürburgring) went to AAW Shell from Finland. All those teams let race their cars at the new Interserie, the European counterpart of the CANAM. But except for a podium for Pedro Rodriguez at the Norisring and for Helmut Marko at Thruxton, no super results were noted.
At the rounds for the 1970 Manufacturer's Worlds, the 908-02 Flunders were no longer winners, but they collected several top-10 places and at Le Mans the Martini 908-02LH finished 3rd. At the 1970 CANAM Tony Dean caused a stir by winning Road America in a tiny 908-02. Porsches 908-02 Flunder were raced until the mid 1970s, even at Le Mans.
