There is no other way to speak about Bruges than in terms of nostalgia. Bruges is less a reality than some dream, conserved by people cherishing a highly virtual past. That's why I had to quit Bruges as soon as I was old enough, because Bruges is a city for tourists and ghosts, certainly not a city to live under the dust of the Middle Ages.
