#19 LOLA  B06/10 - #s  25, 27, 31, 40  LOLA B05/40 (LMP2)

June 7, 2007 - Contrarily to several other teams, racing in 2005 and 2006 hybrid cars, not meeting the aerodynamically rules for 2007 and not meeting a chassis construction with the double roll hoop, Lola - founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley, the father of the famous Ford GT40 derived from his Lola GT Mk6 - launched already in 2005 its B05/40 LMP2 car. In 2006 followed the Lola B06/10, an LMP1 car, having been derived from the one year older B05/40. Indeed, sharing much of its design with the B05/40, the B06/10 was strengthened in various places to handle the heavier loads caused by the increased weight and power of the LMP1 class. The AER/Ford motor found under the big carbon fibre rear deck was brand new in 2006 and possibly even bigger news than the car itself. With eight cylinders, a displacement of 3.6 litres, twin turbos and direct fuel injection, the new Advance Engined Research (AER) 75 degree shares many characte-ristics with Audi's record breaking powerplant used in the R8. A new design from the ground up, it was the most ambitious engine to hit sportscar racing in recent years. Three cars were sold for racing, two to Dyson for the AMLS and one to Chamberlain Synergy for the 2006 LMS

RESULTS 2006/2007 - The B06/10 failed to convince its users in 2006. At the LMS the Chamberlain B06/10 was fourth at the Istanbul and Nürburgring 1000-kms, but never in a position to beat Pescarolos C60HB. At the AMLS the Dyson B06/10s, realising five podiums, could win not a single round. In 2007 the team switched to the faster Porsche RS Spyder. Chamberlain continues to race the B06/10 in 2007. At the Monza 1000-km the car qualified as slowest of the nine LMP1s, and was retired. At the Valencia 1000-km the #19 was again slowest LMP1 qualifier (19th!) but finished the race as 15th. At the Le Mans Test Day the B06/10 realised only the 15th time as one but last LMP1.

Although already entering it's third competition year in 2007 several teams continue to race the Lola B05/40 this year: Binnie Motorsport (#31), RML (#25), Horag Racing (#27) and Quifel ASM (#40). Except for Bill Binnie the others use the flat 4 cylinder turbocharged AER 2-litre engine, developing 530 bhp at 7,500 rpm. Binnie Motorsport uses the 3.4 atmospheric 8-cylinder Zytek 2ZG348, 510 bhp strong. The Judd motor, still used last year (and in 2005) by Horag Racing is no longer used by the Lolas B05/40.

RESULTS 2006 - Last year the Lola B05/40 Zytek of Binnie finished sixth at the Spa 1000-kms and at the Nürburgring 1000-kms. The same car finished as 13th at the Le Mans 24 hours. The RML B05/40 AER (erroneously named MG Lola EX264) finished fourt at the Donington 1000-kms, fifth at the Spa 1,000-kms, sixth at the Jarama 1000-kms and eighth (class winner) at the Le Mans 24 hours (having been won also in 2005). The car was good for two class wins in six outings. Another B05/40, owned by Chamberlain Synergy, won its class at the Spa 1000-kms where it was fourth overall. After that race the same car was sold to Racing for Portugal, and won twice other times is class by finishing 5th overall at the Nürburgring and fourth overall at Jarama. The B05/40 was undoubtedly the best LMP2 car of 2006 with five class wins on six.
RESULTS 2007 - This year the B05/40 AER won already its class in the two first rounds of the LMS. Horag Racing won at Monza, finishing sixth overall, with the RML as eight, and Quifel ASM won at Valencia, finishing seventh overall. At the Le Mans Test Days the B05/40s realised the third (Quifel ASM), third (RML) and fifth (Binnie), surprisingly preceded by the two new Zytek 07S/2 of Barazi Epsilon. [JPVR]
