MAY 5-8 IN AALST (B)
THE 17TH IMCA WORLDS EDITION 2005

The 2005 IMCA Worlds will be contested at the BMC (Belgian Model Car Centre) in Aalst (B). That has been agreed as part of the contract between IMCA and the new owner of the BMC. Indeed, immediately after the IMCA Worlds - and the publicity for model car racing in the press - the complete BMC infrastructure will be moved to one of the bowlings or hotels of the new owner. 2005 will be a year of transition where the company structure of IMCA will be transformed in an association of persons, being operationally immediately after the 2005 Worlds. As long as this transformation is not finished I am responsible for IMCA's financial assets. That implies that I'll be enforced to organise the 2005 Worlds. This will be the very last time, since in 2006 the IMCA Worlds will be contested in Barcelona (E). At the 2005 IMCA Nats my task will be restricted to the regulation of the money incentives for racers, making the press releases and selecting the best racers. Catering will go to an external enterprise. Race direction, I hope so, will go to Mack de Wachter (NL) and Yves Welter sr (B)
Organising such event as the IMCA Nats is no easy thing, certainly not to compare with organising a local or national event. One needs knowledge of the global international calendar to find a good date. The Model Car Worlds may not conflict with the USRA/ESROC Wing Car Worlds [June 7-12, Kouvola, SF], with the ISRA Scale Car Worlds [August, Sao Paulo, BR], or with the USRA Nats [July 23-August 1, USA]. With June, July and August already reserved, the prolonged Ascension week-end of May 5-8 has been choosen as the best solution.
The 2005 IMCA Nats will be restricted to 3½ days and 6 races: (1) the 124 Model Car Worlds, (2) the 132 Model Car Worlds, (3) the Mello Yello Junior Worlds and (4-6) three rounds of the F. Gianotti Trophy (2 endurance races and 1 sprint race). In total 60 racers from 17 different countries will be invited. Selection of the invited racers was made on base of the rank order of still active model car racers having scored IOC points in the past. How many racers per nation are invited is explained in a separate article. [JPVR]

DEFINITIVE TIME SCHEDULE FOR THE 2005 IMCA NATS address: BMC, Moorselbaan 391, AALST - Phone + 32-498-11.57.82

IMPORTANT: It's useless to show on Wednesday evening at the racing premises, since the doors will be closed as we have to install the bar plus tables in the income hall. Doors go open on Thursday morning at 7 am. The meeting is over on Sunday at 3 pm.

EXHAUSTIVE ENTRY LIST WITH ALL THE INVITED RACERS

The last week before the start we noted the traditional withdrawal of "racers" with the even traditional excuses of dead grandmas, diseased mothers, severe bosses refusing free days, school obligations, etc. It concerns Gugu Bernardino (BR), Georges Baikry (B), Dennis Vogel (NL), Jozef Miskolci (SVK), Anders Gustafson (S), Stefan Wiesel (D), Niklas Lindblom (S), Stoffel Vos (B), Rasmus Johansen (DK), and Beate Schulz (D). Except for Gugu, Anders Gustafson, Jozef Miskolci and Niklas Lindblom, none of them will still be invited at an IMCA Nats. That too follows traditional rules. Click here to see the entrants per race. Jose Mario Serra (BR) could be the substitute for Gugu, but is not in the list below. Peter Oberbillig will do the set up of Wiesel's cars at the three rounds for the Franco Gianotti Trophy. Kai Kivekäs (SF), Gabriel Inäbnit (CH), Antónin Vojtik and Daniel Gonzalez (E) are - due to the withdrawals of Gugu, Baikry, Vogel and Äberg, free from the prequalification race. They are now among the 21 selected racers directly placed for the 124 Worlds.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All racers have to do the reservation of their hotel rooms themselves. The longer racers wait to make the reservation, the smaller is the chance that they'll still find rooms in the above hotels. Note that except for the Royal Astrid and the Ibis Hotel all other hotels are at the railway station, i.e. at 5 minutes (by car) from the race location. We ask all racers having reserved a room to send us an e-mail at jppro@pandora.be so that we know in which hotel we can find them!!!

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN BEFORE LEAVING AALST. . .

LEFT: The Belfry of Aalst at the Market Place. ABOVE: The coat of arms of Aalst. BELOW LEFT: The famous Palace Club Restaurant you should have seen before leaving. BELOW RIGHT: The "Borse of Amsterdam", the best known restaurant of Aalst, at the Market Place. Surfing to the web site of Aalst makes no sense, since there is even no version in English...

Aalst, with its 77,000 inhabitants, is cer-tainly not the most spectacular town in Belgium to visit. Therefore you need to go to Bruges, the Venice of the North. Ne-vertheless it should be a real pity having been in Aalst without having visited at least once the market place, where you can admire not only the Belfry and the Borse of Amsterdam in typical gothic style, but also the enjoyable atmosphere of a modest provincial town. More than thou-sand years old, Aalst is since the indus-trial revolution a typical industrial wor-kers town, so well described in the novels of Louis-Paul Boon (1912-1979), one of the best modern novelists in Europe.
It's good to know that it has always been a tradition that during an international slot-racing event, the racers have a social evening in the Palace Club. In this restau-rant, in typical style of the 1960s, you'll find a Corvette StingRay, hanging on the ceiling, also an old Desoto, cut in two, and hanging on one of the walls. Food in the Palace Club is good, and service is fast; but above all it's the place to be if you want enjoy the typical Belgian beers, so famous in the rest of the world.
Aalst is at less than 20 miles from the Brussels airport. On coming by car you should always follow the motorway to Brussels. On the Brussels ring you have to follow the direction of Ghent/Ostend. Aalst is at the third exit of the E40. After having quit the motorway you have to follow the traffic signs "Center" and "O.L.V. Ziekenhuis". The O.L.V. hospital is at the Moorselbaan, where you'll find the race location.

17th 124 WORLDS - NEW FORMAT 39 RACERS WITH DTM CARS

Having no longer a deal with Winston - having been replaced by Nextel as main sponsor of the Nascar premier series - the 124 IMCA Worlds will be no longer contested with Nascar cars, but with DTM cars at scale 1/24th. Used bodies are those of Tamiya (for Mercedes and Opel) and Schuco Tronic or Dickie (for Audi TT-R). Grinding and sanding of bodies is no longer allowed, except on the too heavy Audi TT. Use of carbon fibre is no longer allowed. Chassis is - at the racer's discretion - PlaFit, MoMo, Metris, Slotdevil, Schoeler, Sakatsu or Slotvision. Use of carbon axles is forbidden. Front and rear wheels are Sakatsu OZ or BBS, rears being handouts to come back after the race. Motor is the Bison Mk3. Maximum spur is 79mm. Minimum clearance at the start is always 0.8 mm. Gear ratio is 42/12 or 43/12 at racer's choice.
FORMAT is simple. In total 21 racers are free of prequalification; 18 others - all driving a 2001 DTM car with Arcor sunstroke - have to pass the 6 x 3' prequalification race, followed by a 6 x 4' final, where only the 3 best finishers make the move. That gives 21 + 3 = 24 entrants at the eventual 124 Worlds. Those 24 are spread, following the snake principle, over 4 Quarters of 6 x 4'. Only the 3 first of each Quarter make the move to the Semis, where the 3 first go to the 6 x 5' Main Final.
The 21 racers being free from prequalification have to race the assigned bodies. Mercedes and Opel are always Tamiya kits. Audis are RTR Dickie or Shucco-Tronic (cost € 10). They can be sent to the racers if they want so. All 2002 DTM cars are equipped with Vodafone sunstroke, all 2001 DTM cars with an Arcor sunstroke.

3rd 132 IMCA WORLDS: 18 ENTRANTS WITH NSR/TSRF HANDOUTS

As in Dison 2003 and Aalst 2004 the IMCA 132 Worlds will again be contested with handout RTR motorised chassis by NSR-TSRF. All what the selected racers need to do is to show with an unsanded and ungrinded box stock DTM body of the appropriated kind in scale 1/32.
Scheduled as the first race on Thursday May 5 only 18 racers will be allowed to enter, in principle the best ranked model car racers of the world. After withdrawals by Geert Mertens, Stefan Wiesel, Tamar Nelwan and Jozef Miskolci some lower ranked racers can enter the 132 Worlds.
The 18 selected racers receive their handout RTR motorised chassis two hours before the race. They have to assemble the cars themselves. Once all cars assembled we start with the qualifications. Those qualifications will decide in which of the three quarter finals the racers will be placed. Only the 2 best qualified racers after each Quarter make immediately the move to the Main Final. [We had to change the format after the last minute withdrawal of 4 racers. The Semi-Finals have been dropped and after the Qualifications nobody makes any move. Duration of the Quarter Finals has been increased to 6 x 4'. Duration of the Main Final has been increased to 6 x 5'].

IMPORTANT: All bodies should be of 2002 DTM cars and equipped with the "Vodafone" red and white sun stroke. Without a correct sun stroke cars will be refused at the start.

8th MELLO YELLO JUNIOR WORLDS WITH 124 DTM CARS

Since 1994 IMCA did great efforts to bring year after year at least 16 youngsters (under 22 years) at the start of the Mello Yello Juniors World Championship. The three last years - at Ostend 2002 Josef Korec (CZ), at Lede 2003 'Piki' van Rossem and at Uden 2004 Nick de Wachter - the winner of the Mello Yello Junior Worlds was also the winner of the 124 Model Car Worlds. On the honorary list with Mello Yello winners one finds nothing but real top racers: Sergio Maresca (I), 'Piki' van Rossem (B, 2x), Bernat Basas (E), Dennis Vogel (NL), Josef Korec (CZ) and Nick de Wachter (NL). For 2005 we introduce Michael Niemas (D), Andreas Laufenberg (D) and Kevin Krollman (D) as real contenders for outright victory. Top-2 of 2004 Nick de Wachter and Yves Welter jr (B)  will be again there. Also the 2003 runner-up Gilles Dohogne (B) will start. For Brazil Antonio Teixeira has been replaced by Bruno di Dotto. For the USA Matt Zenovitch - now soldier in South-Korea - is not  back from military service, and will be replaced by America's wonder boy Colin Herzig. In 2001 Matt was already winner, but since all others drove the old PlaFit chassis and Matt the then still unknown MoMo chassis, he was not classified. If he's unable to show he can be replaced by Alicia Gilbert, the daughter of Lee Gilbert.
The Mello Yello will be contested with 1/24th DTM cars. Except for 5 racers directly selected for the 1/24 Model Car Worlds and driving 2002 DTM cars with Vodafone sunstroke, the others will race 1/24th DTM cars of 2001 with Arcor sunstroke.

8th MODELER'S WORLDS: IMCA RULES + RACER'S VOTING

At the 2005 IMCA Nats Concourse will be done in two stages. During the first stage Dieter Jens and Matthias Parke will select among all entered DTM those obtaining, following the IMCA Concourse Rules, a 20/20. Those cars will be exposed on the straight of the track.
During the second stage each country being present can design one voter. He'll receive three voting tickets, res. with 5, 3 and 1 point(s). Those tickets will be posed in front of the cars.
Once each nation has given its votes the voter's points are added. The 20/20 cars will then be ordered following the obtained voting points.
Any modelist can compete at Concourse under the condition that he or she presents a raceable car, respecting all the technical rules. Top-3 at the Modeller's World Championship can be seen at the table below. Never before one of the German top modelers entered the Concourse Worlds. In 2005 it will be their first time. Hard to see who of Paul 'Split' Heath or Tamar Nelwan will be able to beat them.

11th CLASSIC CARS WORLD CUP & AMATEURS WORLDS

All pracitcal info can be found here.
EXPERTS EXPERTS YOUNGSTERS AMATEURS

This year the AMATEUR World Champion-ship will be no separate race, but will be spread over the 3 rounds of the F. Gianotti Trophy. After the 3 races we'll add the points won by each amateur. Ties will be split by comparing the qualification times at the last round: at those qualifications there will be two rounds of 1 minute, the first round with the first driver, the second round with the second driver. There are 15 entrants, nl. 3 from Belgium, 3 from Denmark, 3 from Germany, 2 from the USA, 2 from Spain, 1 from Brazil and 1 from Austria. The winner receives the rainbow t-shirt plus super trophy, the 2nd and 3rd a trophy. [Note also that the 3 first amateurs of 2004 race now with the experts. It are Gabriël Inäbnit (CH), Martin Borch (DK) and Kai Kivekäs (SF).] Curious to see if the Danish racers can win this year! There is also a separate ranking for Experts and Youngsters at the F. Gianotti trophy, where the 3 first will win a super trophy or a trophy. For the point's system, please have a look at our Franco Gianotti Trophy web page.
