Diepenbeek The IMCA Nations Cup (including EuroNats Open, Mello Yello and IMCA Worlds) will be contested at Diepenbeek, a town with 17,000 inhabitants at 6-kms from Hasselt and 110-kms from Brussels. Diepenbeek is the native town of Geert Mertens, the actual model car world champ. The race goes at the Demerstrand Sportcomplex at 300 metres from the railway station. There is a direct railway connection between Diepenbeek and Brussels. Below you can find the time schedule of the trains coming from the Brussels airport and from London and going to Diepenbeek (6-km from Hasselt). |

From 1063 till 1678 Diepenbeek was an independent barony. In 1678 the landcommander of the Teutonic Order at Alden Biesen bought the last part of the ancient barony and maintained the feudal serfdom. Created in 1189 during the Crusades the Teutonic Order was put under a monastic and military rule like that of the Templars, with Hermann von Salza since 1210 as high master. In 1433 the barony of Diepenbeek was split in two parts. The new barons of the second half erected the same year the famous castle of Diepenbeek. Of that castle the ancient tower still exists, but the remaining buildings date from the late 17th century, when the landcommander of Alden Biesen renovated them. |

Without strong army Diepenbeek was between 1178 and 1675 the scene of many plunderings by foreign soldiers. Once under the Teutonic Order, with regular troops, the robbery could be stopped until 1795, when French revoltional soldiers made a brutal end on serfdom. Diepenbeek remained until the 1950s a typical agricultural village without industrialisation. The discovery of coal in 1912 and the digging of the Albert Canal in 1935 gave the start to a rapid conversion. Population increased from 6,200 in 1935 to 17,500 today. Number of houses from 1,200 to 6,400. |

In the
Stationsstraat, place of the raceway, one can always admire the old
castle tower. The late-gothic church steeple of Sint-Servaes (at the
market place) dates from 1497 and stood alone until 1777, when the
rest of the church was rebuilt. The municipal coat of arms was
accorded to Diepenbeek in 1961 and refers to the last seigneurs of
the Teutonic Order, governing the ancient barony from 1678 till
1795. Diepenbeek hosts since 1973 the University of Limbourg (Limburgs
Universitair Centrum) with actually over 5,000 students. The
majority of the active population works outside the municipality,
half in the industry, half in the service sector. The town hall
dates from 1914. |

ADDRESS RACING PREMISES: Sportcomplex Demerstrand, Stationsstraat, B-3590 DIEPENBEEK (B) - Phone: 011-32 29 47 - at 300 metres from the Railway Station |

NEAREST AIRPORT:
Brussels-Zaventem at 110-kms from Diepenbeek and linked by railway. |
|||
|
| TRACK is a 35-metre wooden 8-laner, built in 2000 by PDS (Perry Dekker). Installed in a 48 x 35 m sport hall with 64 working benches - will be raced at 13.8 Volt with 16T pinion (free to all entrants). It is a very fast track with smooth curbs where in principle only 4 marshalls are needed. Lap counting is done by electronic photo cells (BEPFE system by Stefan Vogel, phone +49-82126-21.33.34). Racers can read on-line on a computer screen the achieved number of laps, their ranking and the lap times of the 5 last laps. |
|
| COMPUTER SCREEN is installed face to face to the racers, so that they can see at any moment their scores. Remark the 8 photo-electronic cells at the start & finish line. |
|
| MOST DIFFICULT POINT is the Thumb (immediately after the kid on the picture; it is Desmond Dekker, son of Holland's Hugo Dekker). Just after the lap counting system, on the straight, there is a chicane which can be taken at full speed with a well prepared car. |
