The Giganten Party will be organised this year for the very first time, and will be repeated, always at Barcelona until 2016. It is a series using 1/24th scale Interserie cars of 1973. PRO-drivers use GFK bodies, SEMI-PRO and AMATEUR drivers use resin bodies. PRO drivers and SEMI-PRO/AMATEUR DRIVERS race apart, with apart standings. There are five rounds over 8 * 6 minutes, contested on July 19-20. All entrants will receive for free two deep purple t-shirts with their personal name, the flag of their nation, and their IOC ranking number on it. For PROs we'll use yellow characters & figures, for SEMI-PRO/AMATEURs white characters and figures. Entry fee for the five rounds is up to $ 40.00 per entrant. The three first finishers in each class receive a trophy. If you know where IMCA stands for those are real top-class trophies. Race location is CM LES FRANQUESES, C/ San Isidre s/n Nau 5, 08520 Les Franqueses. Track is IMCA's splendid Steve Ogilvie MTT, a wooden 8-laner, used since end 2011 for all important IMCA races. Racers should be present no later than noon on Tuesday July 19. The 1st Giganten Party will be finished on Wednesday evening at 8pm. There are 2 rounds on Tuesday and 3 rounds on Wednesday. On Wednesday racing starts at 8am. Please note that we have still 4 cars avalable for racers having no personal car. If you wish to drive one of those, please mail us your name and add a recent pic to your e mail. Mailig goes at jppro@pandora.be. No more mail are accepted after July 11, 2011.

IMPORTANT - The Giganten Party is for the Semi-Pros & Amateurs also the basis for the Sprint Worlds for Semi Pros & Amateurs, contested immediately after the Giganten Party on Wednesday evening. Moreover the 8 best finishing racers at the ranking for Semi-Pros & Amateurs are allowed to contest on Saturday the 23rd Sprint World Championship for Pros, contested with identical BMW M cars, assigned by pure lottery. Those cars are used since 2009 for those Sprint Worlds for Pros. The BMW M1 cars have been assembled by the 2010 world champion Michael Niemas. They are equipped with broken in ProSlot motors, tested on track.

Up to now model car racing with classic cars was mainly restricted to the German DSC Cup where persons with direct commercial interests set up the rule book. With the Giganten Party IMCA wishes to launch non-commercial model car racing with classic cars at an international level. Basic principles for this international approach are: (1) only 1/24th models of cars having been raced at a specific year can be entered; (2) only completely unmodified handout tagged motors can be used; (3) racers unhappy with the performances of the handout motor can buy a second tagged one, to be screwed into the chassis before the end of free practice; (4) only handout rear wheels can be used (in two types: 25.5 x 16mm for the G7 Big Bangers, 25.5 x 13mm for the other cars). Such modifications are necessary to counter the all or not justified suspicions that at DSC distributors use more performing motors and tyres than those sold to their costumers -criticism having been worded a.o. by DSC entrant R. Munten.
As cars of a "specific year" I propose those seen at the 1973 Interserie completed with some cars seen at the 1973 Canam. This specification will be maintained during at least 5 years, so that the chosen classic car can be used each year again the yearly Giganten Party which will be maintained on the international calendar at least until 2016. Technical rules can be found under art. 9 of the IMCA Rule Book.
For the first edition in 2011 I propose a single event over 5 rounds with 6 heats of 8 x 4 minutes at Barcelona, spread over two days on July 19-20. Why Barcelona? (1) Our experience at the 2006 Worlds gave full evidence that Barcelona is an excellent summer holiday trip for the whole family. (2) Together with Germany Spain is the real centre of model car racing in the world. As Spain is involved in a sharp economic crisis nearly no Spanish racers were still seen in int'l competition the two last years. (3) It seems in my eyes our duty to let our Spanish friends not alone at the very moment that model car racing reaches an era of fast technological progress.
For the 1st Giganten Trophy we wish to move the IMCA Worlds track, a Steve Ogilvie MTT wooden 8-laner to Les Franqueses where Francesc Reyes organised the 2006 Model Car Worlds. Just as in 2006 international racers will be hosted at Hotel Hesperia del Mar in front of the Barceloneta Beach, famous for its
chiringuitos and their beach parties. Chiringuitos are the stands on the beach where one finds beverages and snacks.
Up from 2011 until 2016 the Giganten Party will count for the Franco Gianotti Trophy. Indeed, I organised since 2004 each year a competition for hard bodied 1/24th model cars to commemorate the late Franco Gianotti and with him all our slot-racing friends who passed away. 2011 will be already the 8th edition.
Below one finds pics of the cars. Of them 48 can be entered at the Giganten Party . Of them also 20 are supposed to do be driven by (non-Spanish) pros. Of the remaining cars 20 are reserved for Spanish racers, and 8 for international racers with the status of semi-pro or amateur. Cars are spread over two classes: (1) 16 to 24 cars with GFK body (class 1) and (2) 16 to 24 cars with resin body. There will be separate results per class! The final ranking after 5 rounds of the resin body racers will decide which 8 semi-pros/amateurs will be allowed to contest o
n Saturday the 23rd Pro Sprint Worlds with handout Niemas BMW M1 cars.

In 1988 Franco Gianotti (middle) won in Chicago the World Championship Endurance Racing. The Wing Car Worlds was won by Mike Swiss (left), the Scale Racing Worlds by Jan Limpach (right). Franco Gianotti was one of the best scale and model car racers of his generation. He was also an excellent chassis builder. In 2002 he passed away after a deadly fall through the roof of his own factory. Since, IMCA realises each year the Gianotti Trophy as commemoration of a great racer and a real great man. This year will be eighth edition. Of the seven previous editions Holland's Nick de Wachter won no less than three editions as can be seen on the roll of honour below. Other winners were Salvatore Noviello (I) in 2005, Christoph Kremer (D) in 2006, "Piki" van Rossem (B) in 2009 and Paul Gawronski (USA) in 2010.

Under the pics of the 60 Interserie cars of 1973 I give an idea who can opt for which car, res. cars for the international pros (u), cars for the international semi-pros & amateurs (u), and cars for the Spanish racers IOC ranked lower than #180 (u). Cars with GFK bodies are marked with g, cars with resin bodies with g. It will be an open champion-ship, which means that anyone can enter until all 48 cars have been chosen. The names of racers mentioned below are nothing more than a suggestion. They don't mean that others should be not welcome. Everybody is welcome except for the Walloon gang that ruined the 5th EEC*. For the 2011 Giganten Party in Barcelona, I propose the following date:
l Barcelona: Tuesday thru Thursday July 19-20, 2011 (followed on Thursday July 21 by the 15th Sprint Worlds 1/32nd with handout 1/32nd NSR Moslers and the 2nd Retro Worlds, on Friday July 22 by the 6th EEC and 10th Endurance Worlds with 2010 FIA GT1 cars; and on Saturday July 23 by the 23rd Pro Sprint Worlds with handout of 30 Niemas BMWs M1).
l NOTE 1: Except for the four KMW SP Porsches and the GFK McLarens M8F there exist 1/24th model cars of all the 1973 Interserie/Canam cars as can be seen here.  I am sure that one of the body makers (Fola Osu, Michael Niemas, NDW, Matthias Parke, Dieter Jens, etc.) will have a GFK copy of the McLarens M8F released by the end of April.
l NOTE 2: Should you have problems with the correct decals then contact Fola Osu of Slotfabrik at fola.osu@googlemail.com. He can make any decal for you. [Jean Pierre van Rossem]
