The 11 rounds of the 2005 FIA GT Championship were won by 7 diffe-rent cars of 4 different makes. Maserati won 4 rounds, Ferrari won 3 rounds, Corvette and Aston Martin won each 2 rounds. There were no wins for Saleen, Lister and Lamborghini. Of the GT1 Ferraris the 575 GTC could win no round at all, finishing only once on the podium. The winningest car was the #11 Larbre Compétition Ferrari 550 Maranello (3 victories), ahead of the #9 Vitaphone Maserati MC12 (2 wins) and the #6 GLPK Corvette MC5 (2 wins). Cars with one victory are the #15 JMB Maserati MC12, the #10 Vitaphone Maserati MC12, the #29 works Aston Martin DBR9 and the #17 R.A.R. Aston Martin DBR9.
During the season 24 GT1 cars were seen at one or more rounds of the FIA GT Championship. Only 8 of them were present at all 11 rounds, and of those 11 the #11 Ferrari 550 Maranello was the lonely one to be brought home at all 11 rounds, and always in the top-7. Most disappointing cars of the 2005 were the Saleens, having never finished on the podium.
In GT2 Gruppe M monopolised all 11 class wins: 6 with the #66 Porsche 996 GT3 RSR and 5 with the sister car #88. Of the 28 different GT2 cars seen during the 2005 season only 4 made all rounds, all Porsches. There were 5 different Modenas in competition, good for 14 entries, but only 3 podiums. Other GT2 cars were the TVR, the Spyker and the Nissan 350Z.

DRIVER'S RANKING IN GT1

Switzerland's Gabriele Gardel is the 2005 FIA GT Champion in GT1. Driving a Larbre Compétion Ferrari 550 Maranello he brought the car home at the 11 rounds he entered. Only one other racer was as consistent, bringing his car home at each of the 11 rounds. It was Portugal's Pedro Lamy, at 9 of the 11 rounds team mate of Gardel on the Ferrari 550 Maran-nello, and at the two remaining rounds (Silverstone and Francorchamps) driver on the works Aston Martin DBR9. With the last car Lamy could not score points despite a victory at Silverstone and a fifth place at the Spa 24 hours. With four overall wins, against three for Gardel, Lamy is the moral winner of the 2005 FIA GT Championship for drivers. Moreover at most 3 hour races where he was paired to Gardel, Lamy did more and longer stints than the racer from Switzerland.
Starting the last round in Bahrein, Gardel was always one point behind the JMB Maserati duo
Karl Wendlinger (A) and  Andrea Bertolini (I), having been leading the driver's standing during most of the season. Having finished the 10 previous rounds always in the top-6 nobody expected that in Bahrein Wendlinger and Bertolini should be out with a broken gearbox after only ...nine of the ninty laps.
Another Maserati duo, now driving a Vitaphone Masera-ti MC12,
Timo Scheider and Michael Bartels, started the last round with an equal number of points as Gardel. When Lamy was at the wheel of Gardel's Ferrari he was mostly leading the Scheider/Bartels Maserati during a 61 laps stint (out of 90 laps). Gardel, however applied a system saving as much fuel of as possible. So the Ferrari had to make only two pitstops for refuelling, while the Vitaphone Maserati had to make at least one more, enough to make the Lamy/Gardel Ferrari finishing ahead of the Scheider/Bartels Maserati. Drama however at the finish, when the scrutineers discovered that the minimum of 3 litres of fuel as scheduled by the rule book was missing. Coup de théâtre when the Lamy/Gardel Ferrari was disqualified, so that Timo Scheider and Bartels were declared to be the 2005 FIA GT Champions in GT1. Jack Leconte, manager of Larbre Compétition, however, went in appeal and obtained that the disqualification was overruled on December 8. So Gardel, eventually won the title.
It's good to remember that without fantastic driving of Pedro Lamy at the Dubai circuit, Gardel should never had won. Indeed, at that race, the Larbre Compétition Ferrari, having replaced its engine during the night, had to start from the real last place on the grid. Lamy, having lapped several rounds faster than the car's fastest qualification time, and being fastest man on the track, succeeded to bring the car back in second position. When
Christophe Bouchut and Stéphane Ortelli had to withdraw their leading R.A.R. Aston Martin DBR9, shortly before the end of the race, Pedro Lamy could catch the lead. After a fantastic and gruelling combat with the Scheider/Bartels Maserati he could take the chequered flag less than a half second ahead of the German pairing! Without Lamy's splendid effort at Dubai Gardel should never have won the title. [JPVR]

DRIVER'S RANKING IN GT2

One can hardly speak of a driver's championship with GT2 cars since only five teams were present at all rounds. Of those five teams the (hidden) works Porsches of Gruppe M were so strong that at no moment there was any competition. Eventually there was only a kind of intramural competition between Marc Lieb and Mike Rockenfeller on the #66 Gruppe M Porsche, and Emmanuel Collard and Tim Sugden on the other #88 Gruppe M.
In that competition both Porsches took at six occasions the two first places in
GT2. At no moment one of the other cars had the smallest chance to beat one of the Gruppe M Porsches. The Lieb/Rockenfeller Porsche finished six times as class winner (finishing each time among the top-10 of the overall standings) and four times as second. The Collard/ Sugden Porsche finished five times as class winner and two times as runner-up.
Second place went at Silverstone to the Embassy Racing Porsche of Cunningham/Collins; at Brno to the Kaufmann and Jurasz Porsche of the Renauer Motorsport Team; at the Spa Francorchamps 24 hours the Autorlando Porsche of Luigi Moccia and Joel Camathias (fired at Graham Nash) finished second; at Zhuhai second place went surprisingly to the new Spyker C8 Roadster (it was the first time of the season that we found not two Porsches at the two first places); and at Bahrein the GPC Ferrari 360 Modena GTC of Luca Drudi won the second place.
Third place in
GT2 went at four occasions to the Ebimotor Porsche of Luigi Moccia/Luigi Businelli; once to the Scuderia Ecosse Ferrari 360 Modena GTC of Kinch/Kirkaldy; once to the Lammertink Porsche of Kaufmann/Moro; once to the Czech Porsche of Jan Vonka; twice to the Proton Porsche of the Rieds; and once to the JMB Ferrari 360 Modena GTC of Mauro Casadei and Chris Buncombe. That means that on eight rounds out of eleven the Porsches took the three first places in GT2. Ferrari won only two podium places with its Modena and Spyker won the lonely other podium place.
