CANAM SERIES 1967

ROUND 4: LAGUNA SECA FOR BRUCE McLAREN

Programme cover of the 1967 Monterey Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. The race was contested two weeks after the American F1 Grand Prix. With still one round to go, one week after the Monterey CANAM Grand Prix it's mathematically sure that Dennis Hulme or Jack Brabham will be the 1967 world champion. Hulme has 7 points more than Brabham. If Jack fails to win the last GP Hulme will be the new world champion. Both they drive a Brabham-Repco.

After three consecutive victories for team mate Denis Hulme, it is now Bruce McLaren's turn to show at victory lane.

Despite a second place on the grid Dan Gurney failed once more to finish with the AAR Lola T70 Mk3B Ford.

Although it's already round #4 out of 6, we find several new cars at the start of the Monterey Grand Prix at Lagina Seca. Eye-catchers are the Ferraris 350P4 Canam, 485bhp strong for 750 kgs, entered by N.A.R.T. With 3 valves per cylinder and 4.2-litre engines they are fast, but not fast enough to threat the American "big bangers". Rumour goes that Enzo Ferrari sent the two cars to prepair his entry at next year's Indianapolis 500 miles, where similar hairy engines are used as at the CANAM. The cars go to two F1 drivers: Chris Amon and Jonathan Williams. The Ferrari 330 P3/4 Spyder of Lodovico Scarfiotti is no longer here. With chassis numbers 0858 and 0860 it were no original CANAM cars but former P4 prototypes. The 0858, now raced with #27, finished earlier this year 2nd at the Monza 1,000-km, 5th at the Spa 1,000-km, 2nd at the Le Mans 24 hours and 6th at the Brands Hatch 500 miles. The 0860, now raced with #23, raced only at the Le Mans 24 hours (where it had to retire) and finished at Brands Hatch second to the Chaparral 2F. Both cars have been transformed to CANAM spyders in August and September.
New too on the grid is the very interesting #21 5.0 Lola T70 Mk2 Ford entered by George Bignotti and American Rubber & Plastic Corp for this year's winner of the Indianapolis 500 miles, Parnelli Jones. Engine was a lightweight 4DOHC Ford, as used at Indianapolis, but enlarged to 4,991 cc (97mm x 81mm), good for 525bhp at 9,000rmp. Initially Jones was expected to drive the famous Ford Caliope (the Ford G7A), but since the car didn't appear at any CANAM round, he opted for Bignotti. Set-up of the very special engine was in hands of Danny Jones, an official motor specialist at FoMoCo. With its lighter weight, despite using the old chassis, the car was very competitive, qualifying as 4th. Only problem was that the engine was designed to be used by alcool as those days India-napolis motors. Used with fuel the Ford injection by Hilborn Travers - a low pressure injection - is problematic. So Bignotti decided to cool the fuel system by using a 20-litre bomb with liquiq azoth - the lonely way-out to exclude vapor lock.

Another Lola T70 seen for the first time in the series was Bud Morley' s, now that he replaced his McLaren-Elva M1B by a T70.Another first season entry came from Miles Gupton showing with a Platypus Oldsmobile. It's the car formerly owned by the late Ken Miles and rebodied by him with a Lotus 19 body. An original Lotus 19G Ford V8 is entered for Bobby Unser. Unfortunately this very popular car - so spectacular in hands of Dan Gurney at the 1965 Daytona Continental - suffered a blown engine at practice and could not start.
A former F1 racer, Tony Settember, came to Laguna Seca with a Matich SR3 Repco, also new in the series. A deficient distributor drive and a broken oil pump made the car beyond repair. Settember then made a deal with Ed Leslie to drive his older Lola T70 Spyder in the eventual race.
To complete the list with cars entered for the first time we need to add two more. Merle Brennan showed with a four years old Genie Mk10 Ford V8. Once - in 1963 and 1964 - a hell of a two-seater "big banger", the glory of the Genie Mk10 belongs definitively to the past. Nevertheless Brennan succeeded in finishing ninth overall.
Last (and least) is an old Brabham BT8 Oldsmobile, entered by Tom Tobin, but retired after practice for not-competitive. [JPVR]

John Surtees suffers again from suspension problems. His car, not really competitive, will be eliminated by accident.

There are two 4.2 Ferraris 350 P4 Canam at the start of the Montherey Grand Prix at Laguna Seca: 485 bhp strong for a weight of 750 kgs (100 kgs more than e.g. the Chaparral 2G). Here Chris Amon's car having finished fifth overall.

The 4.2 Ferrari 350 P4 Canam of Jonathan Williams finished eighth. An improved Chaparall 2G - now lighter - finished as runner-up at Laguna Seca.

The 4DOHC Ford Indy powered Lola T70 of George Bignotti, an entry for Indianapolis winner Parnelli Jones, caused a stir. The car was at least very compe-titive.

Here the Lotus 19G Ford V8 as driven by Dan Gurney at the 1965 Daytona Continental. A blown engine resulted in a withdrawal of the same car, now entered for Bobby Unser.
