CANAM SERIES 1967

ROUND 2: HULME WINS ALSO BRIDGEHAMPTON

In a crazy world of fibreglass it's somehow a miracle to discover a car riveted aluminium body. At Bridgehampton, for the second round of the 1967 CANAM series there are even two "normal" cars, the 4.0 Ferrari 330 P3/4 Spyder and the 5.2 Mirage Mk1A Chevrolet. The Ferrari is entered by Luigi Chinetti of N.A.R.T. for F1 racer Lodovico Scarfiotti. It's only the second time that the Prancing horse shows at the CANAM. One year earlier one saw a 2.0 Ferrari Dino 206S having with its 2-litre engine not the smallest chances against the hairy "big bangers" with 5-litre to 7-litre motors. The car entered this year has chassis number 0844. In 1966 it won still the Monza 1,000-km as a closed Berlinetta in hands of John Surtees and Mike Parkes. The same year Parkes and Scarfiotti won also the Spa 1,000-km with it. The car entered also the 1966 Le Mans 24 hours, the 1967 Daytona 24 hours (where it finished 3rd), and again the Le Mans 24 hours. After the BOAC 500 Miles of Brands Hatch the car was converted in a spyder. With its 4-litre motor it had the smallest engine capacity of the 32 cars showing at Bridgehampton for the second CANAM round.
New on the grid was the McLaren M1C Chevrolet of another F1 racer: Mike Spence. In fact it was the car driven by Chris Amon last year, now entered by Ecurie Soucy. Rest of the entry was for such major teams as:
Bruce McLaren Motor Racing: #4 McLaren M6A for Bruce McLaren and #5 McLaren M6A for Denis Hulme;
Roger Penske Racing:
#6 Lola T70 Mk3 for the new USRRC champion Mark Donohue (having won 6 out of 8 rounds) and #16 for his predeces-sor George Follmer;
All American Racers:
#36 Lola T70Mk3 for Dan Gurney and #78 Lola T70 Mk2 for Jerry Grant;
Team Surtees:
#7 Lola T70 Mk3 for previous series winner John Surtees, still struggling with the modified suspension;
Chaparral Cars Inc:
#66 Chaparral 2G for Jim Hall;
Caldwell Autodynamics: #
1 Caldwell D7 for Sam Posey and #2 McLaren M1B for Brett Lunger;
Dana Chevrolet:
#11 Lola T70 Mk3 for Lothar Motschenbacher and #52 Lola T70 Mk3 for Peter Revson;
Holman & Moody/Paul Newman: #17 Honker II Ford for America's super star Mario Andretti.
Other cars on the grid were all private entries of field fillers.

Of all cars the Honker II Ford was, despite its 8th place at the finish, the most disappointing. It qualified only as 23rd out of 31 starters and was even unable to follow the 4-litre Ferrari. It became obvious that it was merely a show car, not the unbeatable race car as earlier anounced by the press.
Disappointing too was Jim Hall's Chaparral 2G Chevrolet, retired after 38 out of 70 laps with a broken chassis. Just as at Elkhart Lake the McLarens M6A of Bruce McLaren and Denis Hulme were far ahead of the rest of the field. At no moment one of the other cars was able to threat the Kiwi entries. And just as at Elkhart Lake one of the Penske Lolas - now George Follmer's - finished as runner-up behind the McLarens. John Surtees finished now 4th (3rd at Elkhart Lake) despite his serious suspension problems, but at no moment "Big John" - in 1964 still F1 world champion - was in for victory lane. [JPVR]
