WHEN THE SPHINX HAS TO COME DOWN FROM HIS THRONE
An old idea of Jon Laster which Mark Campbell at least helped me to concretize

September 21, 2009 - One day the late Jon Laster wrote me: "You manage slot-racing as a sphinx." Earlier he wrote: "You try to control everything and you'll end as the great dictator of slot-racing." What happened? In the early 1980s there was in 1/24th racing (nearly exclusively wing car racing) a strong competition between Camen, ProSlot, Koford and Alpha. In 1/32nd racing there also a heavy competition with 1-0-1, OPP and RL as most important competitors. Winning a world championship had great commercial consequences and from several sides one insisted to regulate the principle of organising an official world championship. In 1985 that resulted in an official document signed by Hans van Es (NL) on behalf of the wing car racers, Gérard Caupčne (F) on behalf of the scale racers and myself on behalf of the model car racers, stipulating that only a very limited group of persons received the right to organise an official world championship in slot-racing affairs.

One of our lawyers - Dominique Defrance, a great catholic - let us pay a high amount, pretending that this was the lonely way to "patent" the use of the term "world championship" in slot-racing. In 2008 the same lawyer was lifelong suspended after having fooled nearly all his clients. Until then at IMCA we believed strong as iron that a patent protected the use of the term "world championship" in slot-racing. In 2009 an infinitisemal small group of racers - mainly from Norway (having except for Egil Aksnes never  played a role in the history of slot-racing) and Denmark (a nearly white sheet of paper in the same history), helped by the total unknown Mark Campbell from Canada, decided to organise their own world championship for model car racers. Initially we strongly believed that they had no right to do so, until the day that Campbell stated clearly at Slotblog that the so-called patent was no more than a hoax. When I asked my other lawyers to investigate if Campbell was right, it became more than obvious that IMCA had never any patent, just a registered trademark, and that the registration became prescribed since 2005.
Based upon the supposed patent I considered a quarter century long that there were only three types of world championships: (1) the wing car worlds restricted to open G7 as described in the Van Tricht paper, (2) the scale racing worlds for lexan bodied cars (initially ES32, later ES24) and (3) the model car worlds. As in 1985 we considered model car racing the step in class we split it up in four divisions: (3a) the model car worlds sprint, (3b) the endurance model car worlds, (3c) the Mello Yello worlds for kids and (3d) the production sprint worlds.

Jon Laster - with Bernd Möbus the most intelligent person I met in the micro-cosmos of slot-racing - always pretended that the Van Tricht paper was completely artificial. His view point was quite simple: "a world championship is an international race considered as such by the large majority of the racers." He always give the example of the so-called Teresa Anderson wing car worlds of 1988 (won by P-A Watson). Although there was the same year in Chicago an "official" wing car world championship, Jon found that there were in 1988 two wing car races considered by the majority of the racers as a world champion-ship. Towards the end of his life Jon gave the example of the so-called Toronto Worlds. He admired the enthusiasm of Mark Campbell but his statement was that nobody in the world - except the entrants themselves - could consider that meeting as a world championship: entry level was so low that Campbell's Toronto happening should never be recognised as a world championship. Except from Chris Radisich, Tim Tyler and Roger Schmitt the rest of the entry field was formed by noble unknowns (although the name "Nick De Wouter" seemed to say them perhaps something). One year later, however, the "rule of continuity" made that the Toronto Masters were recognised as Toronto Worlds.

Jon Laster defended that there were initially two wing car worlds: (1a) the Open G7 worlds and (1b) the G27 wing car worlds. Later, up from 2005, he insisted that (1c) the OMO G7 worlds were recognised by the large majority of slot-racers as a true world championship. Under impulse of Stefan Törnfeldt the G27 Light race, organised at the Wing Car Worlds since 2001 (but not in 2005 and not in 2007) has been added as the fourth world championship for wing car racers. In scale racing - his child! - Jon found that there were always four worlds considered as so: (2a) the ES24 worlds, (2b) the ES32 worlds, (2c) the 1/32nd F1 worlds and (2d) the Production worlds scale racing. Concerning model car racing he agreed with the four types of worlds as put in the Van Tricht document. Later (5) the Retro worlds were added to that list.
Although slot-racing talk among Jon and me was only a marginal part of our mails or phones, Jon always wished that I should rework my sheets concerning the "official" world championships in slot-racing. I always hesitated to rework the sheet as that seemed as if at IMCA we no longer respected our own "patent". I think that the greatest thing Mark Campbell realised in slot-racing is that he enforced the sphinx who I am to come down from the throne. The Van Tricht paper has not the smallest value as Campbell proved, so nothing prevents to follow Jon Laster's vision - a vision so much more realistic than the conservative Van Tricht paper.
If I follow Jon Laster's vision that there are four wing car worlds, four scale worlds and four model car worlds, there are 12 worlds per year, with 1978 - the wing car worlds won by Joel Montague - as the very first. Instead of 97 world championships with 54 different winners (the Van Tricht approach), there have been 206 world championships with 94 different winners.

WING CAR RACING
In total 30 world championships for wing cars were organised for Open G7 cars (12 by the USRA, 8 by the ESRAC/ESROC, 5 by the NPRA, 4 by the IMCA, 1 by Teresa Anderson).  It's the highest class in slot-racing just as F1 is the highest class in autosport. Apart from that 23 world championships for wing cars were organised for G27 Pro (11 by the USRA, 5 by the NPRA, 4 by ESRAC/ESROC, 2 by IMCA and 1 by Teresa Anderson). Further 7 world championships for wing cars were organised for OMO G7 (3 by NPRA, 2 by ESROC and 2 by the USRA) and 8 wing car worlds were organised for G27 Light (4 by the USRA, 3 by the NPRA and 1 by the ESROC). So 68 wing car worlds were organised. Vladimir Horky (CZ) won 7 times. Vlado Okali (SK) and Paul "Beuf" Pedersen (USA) won 5 times. Paul Pfeiffer (USA), P-A Watson (USA), Paul Ciccarello (USA), and Petr Krcil (CZ) and  won 3 times. Mike Swiss (USA), Mario "MSP" Schöne (D), Jon Laster (USA), Martin Gramann (A), Lasse Åberg (S),
Mikael Silén (S),
Joaõ Geraldo (BR) and Andy Wasserman (USA) won twice. 18 other racers won one wing car worlds.
Seen per country we note following number of victories at recognised wing car worlds: 1. USA (29), 2. Czechia (15), 3. Brazil (10), 4. Slovakia (5), 5. Sweden (4), 6. Germany (2) and Austria (2); 8. Finland (1).

(LEXAN) SCALE RACING
In scale racing 77 wing car worlds were organised with the first in 1985. The highest class is ES24. Here 20 world championships - apart from the 3 first all by the in 1992 created ISRA, were organised. The first edition in 1986 went with piano wire chassis and a semi-open G20 can. In 1991 the NPRA organised an event with tripod chassis and open can. Meanwhile Jon Laster - having introduced scale racing at the USRA Nats in 1986! - developed an own modern ES24 chassis for open can engines. The new formula was tried out by the lonely worlds the UES (forerunner of the ISRA) organised in 1992. Up from 1993 ISRA created its own format with 4 races: ES24, ES32, 1/32,d F1 and 1/24th Production. ES32 was initially an exclusive European speciality, but thanks to Jon Laster, Jan Limpach and Dan Debella the formula reached America. In total 22 worlds for ES32 were organised: the 4 first (1986-1989) by IMCA, the 1992 version by UES, all later editions by ISRA.  organised   (5 by the IMCA, 2 by the NPRA,  and 14 by the ISRA). Even more than ES32 the 1/32nd F1 was a typical British speciality, having been exported to such former colonies as South-Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Via the UES racers from France, Italy and Spain discovered the new class. In total 20 editions have been organised, except for the 2 first all by the ISRA Unfortunately the ISRA results from 1992 to1996 were only partially saved, so that only complete results of 16 editions are known.  Under impulses of Gérard Caupčne 1/32nd F1 racing was included at the 1986 and 1987 IMCA Worlds. 1/24th Production racing with stamped originated at IMCA racing. In 1986 and 1987 there was only one racer per car, in 1987 that was 3 racers per car. Up from 1993 ISRA (under influence of Perry Dekker and the BSCRA) put the class yearly on its program. In total 20 Production worlds have been organised.

Fine technicians as they are the Czechs developed scale racing as a cheaper alternative for the modern American scale racing cars. The Czech Euro-CS/BP was a cheaper version than the Camen or ProSlot scale cars, but at least as competitive as the Americo-Belgian scale cars.  Initially the Italians fully dominated scale racing, especially as - contrarily to the Britons - they used to race such cars without goop. But once the generation of Maresca-Capra-Scarpato-Gianotti-Giacobbi-Novarese disappeared the Czechs pulverised all their competitors (where only the Finns and the Americans formed the opposition). Absolute grandmaster  of scale racing is Vladimir Horky (CZ) who won no less than 22 scale racing world championships (6 in ES24, 6 in ES32, 6 in F1 and 3 in Production). Matti Fyhr (SF) with 7 wins, Josef Korec (CZ) with 6 and Einari Fyhr (SF)  with 5 are the other tenors of the post-Italian period. Sergio Maresca (I) won 6 scale worlds but lost 2 by disqualification for "too low". Giovanni Montiglio (I), Dave Gick (NZ), Paul Gawronski (USA) won 4 scale worlds. Mikail Radkovic (CZ), Jan Limpach (USA), Mikael Landrud (S), Paolo Trigilio (I) and James Cleave (GB) realised 3 victories. Brian Saunders (GB) and Alberto Capra (I) won twice. 18 other racers won oce. [That there are 89 winners for 73 races has not to surprise as at 16 production races there were two racers per car.
Seen per country we note following number of victories at recognised scale racing worlds: 1. Czechia (31), 2. Italy (19), 3. Finland (12), 4. USA (9), 5. Great-Britain (7), 6. Sweden (4) and New Zealand (4), 8. Belgium (1), Holland (1) & Brazil (1).

(HARD BODIED) MODEL CAR RACING
In model car racing the world championships are exclusively organised by the IMCA, and this since 1985. Originally there were 37 in total: 20 in sprint 1/24th, 4 in sprint 1/32nd, 11 for juniors and 2 for Endurance Racing.
Apart from that, 4 competitions in sprint 1/32nd were organised from 1985 to 1988 having been true world championships but never called as such. They were posthumously upgraded to 1/32nd sprint Worlds in 2008. The same happened with five very international endurance races: (1) the Pinky Point team race at the Antwerp Crest Hotel of 1985, (2) the Rouen 24 hours of 1994, (3) the 3 x 12 hours Race of the Century end 2000 and early 2001, (4) the LM70 race at the 2004 Worlds and (5) the LM70 race at the 2005 Worlds. They have been added on the list of Endurance Worlds for model cars.
After the posthumous upgrading of the "forgotten" 1/32nd sprint Worlds and the six "forgotten' Endurance Worlds there have been 61 world championships in model car racing: 23 in sprint 1/24th, 14 (instead of 4) in Production, 14 for juniors (& amateurs), and 10 (in-stead of 2) in Endurance Team Racing.
The Amateur's World Champion, Modeller's World Champion and Constructor's World Champion are not recognised by the majority of the racers. Since 2009 Mark Cambell organises his own model car world championship, having started in mineur in Toronto, but having reached maturity in 2010 at Trier.
"Piki" van Rossem (B) won 9 model car worlds, Nick de Wachter (NL) 5, of which two were as well as "stolen" at the Uden Blue King after "The Cheater" changed the track conditions during the night before the race with the help of Tamar Nelwan, so that the set-up of all other cars was at once completely wrong. Niemas (D) won 4 model car worlds. Six racers won 3 model car worlds: JPVR (B), Jan Limpach (USA), Sergio Maresca (I), Salvatore Noviello (I), Josef Korec (CZ), and Philipp Kremer (D). Nine other racers won two model car worlds: Csaba Szekelyhidi (USA), Giovanni Montiglio (I), Georges Baikry (B), Leo Vogel (NL), Franco Gianotti (I), Geert Mertens (B), Dani "Giesse" Gonzalez (E), Christian Schnitzler (D), and Desmond Dekker (NL).  16 other racers won once. If we look to the 4 last years one cannot deny that the Germans dominate actually model car racing.

GLOBAL REVIEW: 94 WORLD CHAMPIONS AT 206 WORLDS
The 206 world championships were won by 94 different racers. They are the only ones on earth who can name themselves, recognised by the large majority of racers, a slot-racing world champion. Czechia won 56 times (with 47 wins for its top-4: Horky, Korec, Krcil & Radkovic). The USA won 47 times but needed 22 racers for that against only 8 for the Czechs.  Third most winning nation is Italy with 32 victories - the largest majority of them having been collected in the mid-1980s. Then follows surprisingly Belgium with 20 wins having been realised by only 5 racers. The, in actual model car racing, so feared Germans won only 15 times with 4 wins for Niemas and 2 wins for Schöne in wing car racing and only one win in model car racing earlier than 2006. In sixth position follows Finland with 13 victories having been realised by only 3 racers. Then follow: 7. Holland (11), 8. Brazil (10), 9. United Kingdom (9), Sweden (9), 11. Slovakia (5), 12. New Zealand (6), 13. Spain (4), 14. Austria (2) and 15. Australia (1) and Norway (1). [That there were 228 winners for 206 worlds shall not surprise if one realises that at the ISRA Production worlds and at the IMCA endurance worlds there is more than 1 racer per car.]  The youngest world champion in history is Quinten Vanspauwen who, 12 years old, won the 2010 Semi-Pro Worlds. The newest racers having won one world championship are Isaias Jordão and Filippe Tavares da Silva, both from Brazil who won in 2010 the OMO G7 World Championship at Port Jefferson, NY (USA).
Nations as Russia, Argentine, France, Portugal, the Baltic States, or South-Africa won never a world championship.

If one looks at individual performances it stirs that Czechia's Vladimir Horky is with 30 won worlds (22 in scale, 7 in wing, 1 in model) the absolute topper. He is followed by his former disciple and country mate  Josef Korec: who won 13 worlds
(6 in scale, 3 in model, 4 in wing).  Piki van Rossem (B) won 10 worlds. Then follow Sergio Maresca (I) and Matti Fyhr (SF) with 7 won worlds. Of them only Maresca won in two different specialities: 4 in scale and 3 in model. Two racers won 6 worlds: Giovanni Montiglio (I) and Jan Limpach (USA). Of the racers having won 5 worlds, we have Vlado Okali (SK), Paolo Trigilio (I), Dave Gick (NZ), Nick de Wachter (NL), Paul "Beuf" Pedersen and Einari Fyhr (SF)
Five racers won 4 worlds: Salvatore Noviello (I) once in scale and 3 in model; Petr Krcil (CZ) once in scale and 3 in wing;  Paul Gawronski (USA) 4 in scale. Nine racers won 3 world championships: America's Paul Pfeiffer, P-A Watson, Paul Ciccarello and 3 times in wing car racing; 'Gugu' Bernardino (BR), Mikail Radkovic (CZ), James Cleave (GB), Mikael Landrud (S) and Brian Saunders (GB) (having won 19 IOC races) in scale; Jean Pierre van Rossem (B), Georges Baikry (B) and Philipp Kremer (D)  model cars. Kremer is the youngest world champion in history. Pfeiffer, absolutely unbeatable during the early 1980s, could have won three world championships more, should they have been organised on a yearly basis during that period. Of the 18 racers having won 2 world championshipsJon(athan) Laster (USA) was the one having collected the most worlds podiums (6 in total),  Martin Gramann (A) the first European having won both the Open G7 Worlds and the USRA G7 Pro Nats, and Christian Schnitzler (D) probably the one with the nicest future in front of him.

48 racers won one world championship. Best known among them is undoubtedly Joel "Geez" Montague (USA) who won in 1978 the very first world championship. Of the 94 officially recognised world champions four passed already away: this year Jon Laster and Martin Gramann, last year Perry Dekker (NL) and in 2002 Franco Gianotti (I).
Not recognized was by the majority of the racers - the criterion which Jon Laster thus proposed - was the victory of America's Matt Zenovitch in the 2001 Mello Yello Junior's World Championship for model cars, since he was the lonely one authorized to drive a MoMo car, whilst all others had to race the old PlaFit chassis. Not officially recognized either were the wins of Germany's Matthias Parke at the 2004 Constructor's World Championship and of Tamar Nelwan (NL) at the 2005 edition. This competition is no longer organised and the titles were never considered by the majority of the racers as a true world championship. The non-official world championship for modellers (Concourse) was organised nine times. Here the Britons won three times, twice with George Kimber and once with Steve Walker. Holland won twice with Hugo Dekker, Slovakia once with Jozef Miskolci, South-Africa won once with Al Paterson, Switzerland once with Gabriel Inäbnit  and Belgium won twice with Christophe Boxus and with Louise Valkenborgh.  The win of Børge Haug at the 2009 Toronto Masters in sprint, of Chris Radisich in production and of "Javi" Checa Lozano and Roger Schmitt in endurance,  were initially not recognised as world championships, as there were hardly five or six serious opponents at that meeting. However the rather disastrous Toronto event of 2009 was followed in 2010 by a well attended Campbell-worlds at Trier. Applying the "rule of continuity" that implies that up from 2010 Haug, Radisich, Checa Lozano and Schmitt are recognised as having won one world championship. They thus have been added to the list of "official" world champions.  [JPVR]

Note: From 1985 thru 1988 there were two model car worlds per year. The real first in 1985 is no Worlds 124, since it was contested with 1/32nd cars. 1985OT: 124 Group 15; 1986: 124 G20; 1987-1988a-1989: 124 G12; 1988b 124 G12 (endurance); 1994-2001 124 hard plastic PlaFit; since 2002 124 hard plastic Open. The 1991 edition is no longer recognised. Since 2009 Canada's Mark Campbell organises his own sprint world championship for model cars.
