WINS HIS 8TH G7 NATS DESPITE ROCKETING PETR KRCIL |

USRA-1 legend P-A already eliminated at Quarters - Skinner eliminated
at Semis for 15 inch |
|
August 13, 2011 - The USRA Div 1 Nats are
no longer the slot-racing event of the year. The last decennium the
event lost completely its glitter and glamour. The event became so
much "second hand" that the Atvidaberg 12 hours were organised this
year during the same week-end of the G7 Pro. In former days that
should have been a sacrilege, now there were more pros at the
Swedish 12 hour race - even the reigning world champion Josef
Korec and the best all-time racer Vladimir Horky (winner
of 31 worlds!) than at the G7 Pro race. Year after year that number
diminishes. This year only 9 pro racers showed for the race. At this
year's G7 Worlds they were 27! That proves enough that the USRA Div
1 Nats are since years no longer the most important slot-racing
event of the year. With only 9 pros at the start the race even lost
its level 1 IOC status. Several top racer, being present at
Chick's Hobbiz even did not start this year. Among them the former
winner Joe "Chubby" Salzman (USA) - two days ago still winner
of the OMO G7 race - Ulf Edgar Pietsch (D), Jose Mario Serra
(BR), Brad Friesner (CDN), Andre Villar (BR), Fabio Signoretti (BR),
Stuart Koford (USA), Chris Radisich (NZ), etc., etc. G7 is since
a couple of years no longer the most popular discipline in wing car
racing (something that triple G7 world champion Paul Pfeiffer
already predicted in 1999). Now G27 Lite and OMO G7 are the popular
classes. Former popular classes as International G15 and G27 became
museum antiquities, having no longer the smallest sense to be kept
on the calendar.
QUALIFICATIONS - We noted no sharp times
at the qualifications, staying miles away from the 1"404 WR
realised by "Beuf" in 2007. TQ went to Bill W.H. Skinner in
1"5021, enough to win the Craig Landry Trophy. Second and
third best time were realised by Petr Krcil (CZ) and
"Gugu" Bernardino (BR). We noted 29 entries in total, except for
six all by American racers. The unusual weak time realised by USRA
G7 legend P-A Watson from Texas (the record holder in the
number of entries at the USRA Pro G7 at the main) let understand
that he didn't show with his best car this year. Watson is the
lonely wing car racer on earth who won in the past $ 10,000 cash for
winning a wing car race. It happened in 1987 in France on the John
Ford Blue King of Toulouse. This year it was after his poor 1"6699
fully predictable that he should have big problems to survive the
Quarters. |

QUARTERS - We noted three major surprises
at the Quarters. That P-A was eliminated was not among the three
surprises, it was predictable as written above. That Japan's Jiro
Takeuchi was eliminated was indeed a suprise. At the Geezer race
- of which the final results were so much a pure puzzle that I
daren't to publish them - he qualified easily in 1"58. Today his car
seemed slower and after only 145 laps he was out with technical woes
in the pits. Eliminated too were Les Wright (USA) and
Reggie Coram (StM). Very few were the spectators who expected
that they should not survive the Quarters. Among the 13 racers who
missed the move to the Semis we found 11 Americans. Their Brazilian
opponents all survived the Quarters.
SEMIS - For the first
time since the start of the USRA Nats - where covering was terrible
- we get from Shontel some information permitting a short report. At
Semi B Archie King (USA) was leading the six first segments
until his motor fried. That Semi is dominated by the Brazilians
"Gugu" Bernardino (698 laps) and Emerson Fischler (694
laps). Two Americans make the move to the main together with the
Brazilians: Shelby Thomas (691 laps) and Chase Walker
(689 laps). Gary Puetz comes only two laps short to realise
the main. Also eliminated are Zdenek Benes (CZ), James Grinstead
and the very unlucky former leader Archie King. In Semi A
it's "Beuf" Pedersen setting the pace, visibly at an higher
speed than Archie King, later "Gugu", did at the previous Semi.
Petr Krcil and Marty Meltaburger have no problems to
follow the pace of "Beuf" some laps behind. Felipe Tavares da
Silva and Larry Langdon lost too much time on technical
woes to have the smallest chance to avoid elimination. Eliminated
since long is John Batson who's motor was knocked out and
whose chassis didn't function any longer properly. He thus retired
after 375 laps. Struggle went among Bill W.H. Skinner and
Oliver Sonnbichler for the fourth place, the last one insuring
the move to the main. Skinner was leading Sonnbichler during the six
previous segments, but at the one but last segment the Austrian can
undo his arrears and passes Skinner. The American, who already last
year lost the move for a couple of laps - finishing ninth overall -
fights like a devil, comes in the same lap as the Austrian, but
comes ... 15 inches short to pass him. So Skinner finishes again
ninth overall, just like last year, and the Austrian architect
reaches for the second time the main at the USRA Div 1 G7 Pro Nats. |
|
MAIN FINAL -
We went to the main with no less than six racers
who realised already last year the main. For the States that are
Paul "Beuf" Pedersen (last year's winner) and Chase Walker
(last year's third). For Brazil it are "Gugu" Bernardino
and Emerson Fischler. For Czechia it is the multiple former
world champion Petr Krcil (who finished last year as
runner-up). And for Austria Oliver Sonnbichler - using MSP
armatures - kept the memory of Martin Gramann alive by
reaching again the main. New in the main are the Americans Shelby
Thomas and Marty Meltaburger. After the first segment
the #1 & #2 of last year, Beuf and Krcil, are already lieding the
rest of the field in 148 laps, followed at one lap by Chase Walker
and Shelby Thomas. After two segments the race is already over for
Krcil. He looses 61 laps in the pits. The four Americans (order:
Beuf-Chase-Marty-Shelby) lead now the four non-Americans by a
serious margin. Also for Oliver Sonnbichler, who lost 50 laps on
repairs - the race seems over. During the third sement Krcil can
reduce his arrears on Beuf by ten laps, however not enough to dream
still of a podium place. Beuf has now already six laps over Walker,
ten over Meltaburger. First non-US driver is Emerson Fischler, but
already 23 laps down to "Beuf". At mid-race "Beuf" has 581
laps, 27 more than Meltaburger. First non-US racer is always Emerson
Fischler, now already 32 laps down to the lead and always fourth.
Nobody doubts that "Beuf" will win his 8th USRA G7 Nats. Only
Krcil is a little faster but his arrears of 50 laps are
unbridgeable. During the fifth segment Fischler can catch the third
place, 31 laps down to "Beuf". Krcil is still 50 laps down. During
the sixth segment Krcil can reduce his arrears on Beuf from 50 to 35
laps. "Gugu" who had just passed Fischler for the third place runs
in problems and drops into seventh position. Walker is now second at
15 laps, Fischler third at 33 laps. Sonnbichler is immobile in the
pits. During the seventh segment Krcil - the fastest man on the
track, can move into third position, 12 laps down to Chase Walter,
but 31 to Beuf. The race is over: "Beuf" is on his way to victory
lane, already for the ...8th time at the USRA G7 Pro race. During the very
last segment the rocketing Petr Krcil comes back to only ...
one lap behind Chase Walker. Winner is Paul "Beuf"
Pedersen. But let's be honest: without the technical problems at
the second segment, where he lost 61 laps, Petr Krcil should
have won the 2011 USRA G7 Pro Nats. He is without any doubt the
MORAL WINNER of the race. First Brazilian is Emerson Fischler
on rank #4. [JPVR] |

August 12, 2011 - It's impossible to write
any decent report on what is happening at this year's USRA Div 1
Nats. Paul Kassens's team, supposed to cover the meeting, is even
too lazy to publish correctly the name and first name of the racers
in the published results. If they write "Ron H", how to know if it
is "Ron Hershman" or "Ron Herrera". And who of the OWH readers knows
that "UEP" stands for "Ulf Edgar Pietsch"? And who is "Peter"? Is it
"Peter Fröbl" or perhaps "Petr Krcil"? And Japan's "Jiro" is there.
But is this "Jiro Takeuchi" or someone else. I am too old for
puzzling, because reading the results is solving a puzzle. What a
complete lack of respect for the OWH readers. All Kassens's team
does is publishing pics and pics and pics, without the smallest
comment. It's obvious that they make only a report for those who are
there without the smallest interest in the rest of their readers. In
40 years I never have seen such complete ignorance of readers.
Kassens's guys fill dozens of web pages to tell just a bloody
nothing. What a bunch of imbéciles is covering this year's Nats???
Take the G7 Geezer Race of yesterday. All we know is that "Jiro"
TQ-ed in a sharp 1"58. And that it was. They are even too
lazy to publish the smallest puzzle result. Instead of doing
somewhat on this complete anti-promotion of wing car racing, Paul
Kassens continues to publish completely empty remarks, helping
you not one step further in knowing what's going on at Chick's
Hobbiz. Worst of all is that nobody else is bringing any news and
that we all are condemned to consult the pure nonsense that Kassens
& Co publish. The USRA Div 1 Nats became so marginal, that nobody
else publishes one word on it! [JPVR] |

Nats I covering: Even the Amish do better without computer, without
TV & without electricity |
|
August 10, 2011 - It's
well known in the States that we are looking after some decent
sponsors in view of the 2013 IRRA Retro Racing Worlds in Chicago.
Main condition to find sponsoring is that the event can be covered
national wide on TV. On trying to conclude a TV contract we always
must tell how great, how magnificent is our sport. Imagine now one
moment that a potential TV station asks to see the results of the
recent American National Championship. And let them have a look on
the right table and at the three small tables below. What will a
producer tell when he sees the right table: that slot-racing must be
extremely marginal, not worth any TV covering, because organisers
are even not capable to publish the name and the first name of the
competitors. And remark also (1) that I completed the names where I
could, and (2) that I did at least an effort to publish the complete
ranking. Indeed, on the OWH - becoming day after day more ridiculous
with on the cover the "Flat Worlds" -only the top 10 were published,
and then in such a way that the reader had to guess that Petr K must
be Petr Krcil, that Felipe must be Tavares da Silva, that Emerson
can only be Fischler, that the G in James G stands for Grinstead.
Imagine that the Amish organise tomorrow a sport event and that they
cover it. OK, they cannot put in on the internet, can not use a web
cam, can even not use an electrical type writer - because their
religion forbids the use of electricity - but you can be sure that
one of the Amish will note the results in his best handwriting, that
no first name and no name will be missing, that his Amish friend
will bring the results plus the handwritten report to the local
Amish Herald Tribune (and even to the Amish Times) and
that in the evening edition everybody will be able to read a nice
report and decent results. But what does Paul Kassens at
the OWH? He's too lazy or to poor, or both, to make himself the
report, he sends Shontel to Chick's Hobbiz - of course unpaid
- and she does even not the smallest effort to publish the names of
the racers. This is a pure shame. Such people ruin all our efforts
to bring a very marginal thing as slot-racing national wide on TV.
People watching the OWH must have the impression that what is
published is only intended at the competitors themselves (they at
least know who are Mike M, Ed G, Derek, Nick G, Merrell, Big Willy,
Flabo, etc), not at a broad public. Please Paul Kassens, return
immediately to your Philippines, stay there and close your
ridiculous OWH. If you are too poor or too lazy to do it yourself,
and if you are unable to pay someone doing your work, stop then to
ridicule slot-racing as a sport. Go to the beach, pay court to the
girls, drink a glass of fine wine at somebody else's costs, but stop
your continuous insults at the address of all those who love and
promote the
sport. And if in a country with 300,000,000 inhabitants there are
only 10 racers showing at the 35th Int'l G15 Nats, then write
nothing about it, because that too proves how marginal slot-racing
in the USA is nowadays! [JPVR] |

JOSEF KOREC BEATS
FRÖBEL AFTER TERRIBLE BEUF BAD LUCK |
|
TQ
for MSP Schöne in 1"418 - 1291 laps of Korec no new WR (=1317
by Schöne) |
|
May 23, 2011 - There can be no doubt that
this year's Plzen Wing Car Worlds were the best since the real first
Wing Car Worlds in Gothenburg in 1978. Venue was excellent: except
for P-A Watson, Chubby Sazlman, Anders Gustafson and
Stefan Törnfeldt all the best wing car racers of the world were
present. Sure, there were no racers from Australia, but after the
2004 Ultimate G7 Race we all know that the Aussies - except perhaps
for Wayne Bramble and Tim Tyler are no match for the
European, American and Brazilian wing car racers. And yes, there
were no wing car racers from Portugal and Mallorca, but at the 2004
Ultimate G7 Race they were nowhere as they are practicing on
obsolete hyper slow King tracks. Splendid were the web cam images in
a real top quality. We all know that Czechs are grand masters in all
what is technics, but we didn't know that they are also such grand
masters in broadcasting. The images were perfect, even on a full
screen, at the same high quality as at your own TV station. And yes
at the last race, the G7 race, the web cam failed with over 150
spectators, and the lap counter was not visible but the local
Koreja kept us informed after each stint. Czechs are great
organisers but that they were able to realise such a splendid speed
fest was even for the biggest optimists among us a major surprise! We
found 39 racers at the start: 24 official pro racers (names in
green) and 15
semi-pros. America was present with 8 racers, a record (if we forget
the 2004 Ultimate G7 Race where Americans enjoyed starting bonuses).
The ten last years things really changed a lot. Before 2000 the USRA
Division I Nats were considered to have a higher prestige than the
Wing Car Worlds. Americans came never to Europe on years such worlds
were not organised in the USA. Now nearly nothing is still left of
the grandeur of the former USRA Division 1 Nats: one hardly finds
some Europeans travelling to the Nats. The summit of wing car racing
goes now to the Wing Car Worlds and the Campeonato Brasileiro. The
USRA Div 1 Nats lost their magic attraction, they are no longer the
place to be. Finland, nowadays the #1 wing car country in Europe,
was present with seven racers, all their best drivers. The Germans,
having carefully prepared this year's Wing Car Worlds by showing at
the Czech Nats and the Worlds W-U Races in January and
February were present with their six best racers. Sweden, until the
mid 1990s still the #1 wing car nation in Europe was only present
with four racers, one of them, André Eriksson, being the very
successor of Lasse Åberg who seems to have
retired from active competition in wing car racing. Czechia had only
four own racers at the start, but with Horky, Korec, Krcil and Benes
their four best men. Brazil, having beaten sharply the USA in G27
and in G27 Light, was present with seven racers. Slovakia, Austria
and Sint-Maarten had each one driver at the start. Nobody from
Argentine or Switzerland, although those countries were present at
other wing car races at this year's Plzen Wing Car Worlds.
Concerning the race direction the Czechs eventually understood that
one doesn't
need an Andy Wasserman to find a fine race director. At Plzen race
director Siggi Glink was worth several Wassermans, making
that results were on the web only a couple of seconds after each
run. |

QUALIFICATIONS - Before the start of the qualification round
there was a mot of speculation if the 1.404 realised by Paul
"Beuf" Pedersen on 3 March 2007 should be improved or not. Several
specialists didn't believe it was possible on a King track with
larger curb radiuses and with shorter streets. It was believed that
the Zlin King was rather one for a new 40-minutes record (1317
laps by Mario MSP Schöne on January 25, 2011) than for a one lap
WR. That the Zlin track is one pf the fastest in the world was
proven at the qualifications where no less than 13 racers realised
times in the 1.4s. However, nobody could go under the 1"4. Best time
was 1.418 by Germany's Mario "MSP" Schöne, followed by
a 1.428 for the IOC #1 Vladimir Horky and 1.452
for the American world record holder Paul "Beuf" Pedersen.
CONSIS - The 24 fastest qualifiers were
automatically qualified for the Quarter finals. The 15 others had to
go through the Consis were only the 8 best could make the move to
the Quarters. Here Bill W.F. Skinner (USA) was the fastest
with 515 laps. It was painful to see that we lost already three of
our seven Finnish racers: Esa-Pekka Soyrinki, Pekka Sippola
and Jyri-Ville Pouttu. Also eliminated was Austria's
Oliver Sonnbichler, who in normal situations is a man for the
Semis or the Main. But now he lost all his chances by technical
problems shortly after the start. The most pai!nful elimination was
that of Per Persson who was leading his consi at mid-race,
but who came two track sections short to make the move. Also
eliminated were Rainer Borsutski (D) and Jeff Mack (USA).
QUARTER FINALS - Drama before the start
of the Quarters when Forrest Watchers - who finished as vice
world champion in OMO G7 (just as last year) - was eliminated with a
broken forefinger. Dramatic race also for Klaus Wickert (D)
who realised the 12th place on 32 but was eliminated. Same story for
the former world champion Petr Krcil (CZ). For Reggie
Coram and for two new world champions - Hamilton Veronese
(BR) in G27 Light and Mikael Silén (S) in OMO G7 - the
race finished early after technical woes. Brazil, still so
convincing in G27 and G27 Light lost three more racers: Marcelo
Triginelli, Fabio Signoretti and the 2010 G7 wing car world
champion Filipe Tavares da Silva. With four Brazilians
eliminated only three made the move to the Semis. The Americans lost
half of their racers at the Quarters with Les Wright, Gary Puetz,
Al Chuck and Chase Walker all four eliminated. Disastrous
race for the new European G7 wing car champion Juha Yli-Sipola
coming more than 40 laps short - all lost in the pits - to make
the move. Zdenek Benes (CZ) and Peter Karlsson (S)
were the other racers being eliminated at the Quarters. So we noted
the following situation after those Quarters:
- USA has only 2 of its 8 starters still in
competition;
- Finland lost 4 of its 7 starters and goes
with 3 racers to the Semis;
- Czechia lost half of its 4 entrants and has
only Horky and Korec in the Semis;
- Brazil lost 4 of its 7 starters and goes with
3 racers to the Semis;
- Sweden has only one of its 4 racers in the
Semis: André Eriksson;
- Germany did pretty well by losing only 2 of
its 6 entrants with Peter Fröbel who survived on a miraculous way
with only 499 laps, finishing as last of the survivors;
- For Slovakia Vlado Okali survived, but for
Sint-Maarten Reggie Coram was out, just as Oliver Sonnblichler for
Austria. |
|
SEMI FINALS - For the
3 surviving Brazilians the Semi finals finished as one big disaster.
The fresh G27 world champion, Isasias Jordaõ, was just as his
country mate Marcelo "Bambi" Serra victim of technical woes,
early in the race. So both failed to defend their chance. A complete
other story for "Gugu" Bernardino who was in his semi
involved in a gruelling combat with Mario "MSP" Schöne for
the fourth place. MSP had a poor start and was initially 10 laps
behind "Gugu". By turning continuously in 1.7s he could bit by bit
narrow the gap, but starting the last stint, he was always 2 laps
down to "Gugu". Only during the last stint MSP succeeded to pass
"Gugu" so that the Brazilians lost their last and best man. For
Finland the former European champion Leo Hongisto struggled
already with problems before half race so that it was impossible for
him to reach a fourth place. Jari Porttinen, under normal
conditions always a man for the Main ran also in problems and was
eliminated before mid-race, so that of the 3 surviving Finns after
the Quarters only one could make the move: Petteri Pirhonen.
Of the Germans Peter Fröbel was, just as at the Quarters, the
man reaching the Main with the lowest number of achieved laps.
Nobody expected to find him in the Main, but it was well known that
he prepared this race on the most meticulous way, after having been
present at Zlin as well in January as in February. Everybody
believed that among the Bruhl wing car racers Ulli Pietsch
and Heiko Thinschmidt were the guys to make the move to the
Main, but no, it were Mario "MSP" Schöne after his terrible
fight with "Gugu" and the unexpected Peter Fröbel. For
Slovakia it was generally expected that Vlado Okali should
make the move, but he too was eliminated after technical woes. Two
fastest men at the Semis were Vladimir Horky (CZ) with 791.04
laps and Bill W.H. Skinner (USA) with 790 laps.
MAIN FINAL -
So we went to the Main with 2 Americans (Beuf & Skinner), with 2
Czechs (Horky and Korec), with 2 Germans (Schöne and Fröbel) and
with 2 Scandinavians (Pirhonen and the surprising André Eriksson).
Unfortunately we had no pics of the track during the three first
stints, and no lap totals during the whole race. Fortunately
Koreja
remarked in time the UStream problems pitting up from mid-race the
situation on the forum. Once the images of the track were restored
we found the main favourite, Vladimir Horky, in last
position. We saw how he had several times braid problems, loosing
dozens of laps. When we got image we found Bill W.H. Skinner
going out on the lead, followed on 3 laps (at mid-race) by Josef
Korec and Paul "Beuf" Pedersen. During the fifth run
Skinner was loosing speed, being passed by Korec. That run
"Beuf" was deslotting three consecutive times. After five runs Korec
was leading the surprising André Eriksson by 3 laps, "Beuf"
with 12 laps, then Skinner, then Fröbel, then MSP, then Pirhonen and
far behind the unlucky Horky. During the sixth run we saw Korec
struggling on red and loosing lap after lap on "Beuf". Towards the
end of the heat "Beuf" took the lead, whilst Eriksson ran in serious
problems. Skinner dropped into fifth position, being passed by MSP
and Fröbel. After six heats "Beuf" was in for 1328 laps, a new world
record. But then, towards the end of the seventh heat, the car of
"Beuf" broke its guide. We saw him with maximum adrenaline smashing
his controller to the floor. At once it was all over for the
American. Korec took aver the lead whilst Fröbel was passing MSP for
the second place!!! Korec won his second G7 Worlds (his 14th
world championship). Fröbel was the happiest man on earth by
finishing 2nd. [JPVR] |

|
No
new WRS -1.606 of Benes & 1047.09 of Thinschmidt not improved -Horky looses at the end |
May 22, 2011 - Never before in slot-racing
history one found so many racers at the start of an OMO G7 race. At
Plzen there were no less than 55 starters, among them - except for
"Beuf" Pedersen (present, but a non-starter) and Anders Gustafson
(absent) - all the best wing car racers in the world. We noted
twelve entrants from Finland (still the first European wing car
nation), nine from Germany (becoming the second European wing car
nation after a Blue King was installed at Brühl), eight from Czechia
and the U.S.A., four from Sweden (the former first European wing car
nation, where the same wing car racing is on its way to pass away
after Stefan Törnfeldt had to close his track), six from Brazil, two
from Switzerland, Austria, Argentine and Slovakia, and one from
Sint-Maarten. No racers from Portugal at the start, although the
Porto King is still alive. Of the former important European wing car
nations nobody is left. Here I think on France were there was a
florishing wing car centre in Creteil (with the Thibaults, Didier
Moret, Alain Lefèbvre and so many others) and on Holland (where no
more wing car racers are left at the former wing car temple of
Uden).
Fastest qualifier is the fresh European G7 wing car
champion Juha Yli-Sipola (SF) in 1.633. It has been
written that the 13 fastest qualifiers were all faster than the
former world record. That, however, is pure nonsense, due to the
ridiculous world records sheet at the OWH, keeping the world
absolutely not well informed about the evolution of the world
records. The actual WR in OMO G7 over one lap is
1"606 realised on
February 19, 2011 at the same Plzen King by Zdenek Benes (CZ)
who that day improved his own WR of 1"643 realised at the same track
on January 22. Some readers of the OWH are blinded by the 1.5s
realised during the race by Felipe Tavares da Silva (1.534), by
Hamilton Veronese (1.574) and by Vladimir Horky (1.591). Here it
probably concerns three riders although I cannot exclude that the
1.591 of Horky was regular. However the fastest laps during a race
are never taken in consideration on keeping WRs. Another nonsense on
the OWH - also due to the ridiculous record files Paul Kassens
publishes - was the affirmation that after 40 minutes no less than
nine racers improved the 40 minutes lap WR. That too is pure
bullshit, because the WR is
1047.09 laps, realised on February 19 by Heiko
Thinschmidt (D) at the same Plzen King track. That was an
improvement of the 1044.02 laps WR set by Ulli Edgar Pietsch
on the same track on January 22.
We had to wait the end of Group C before having an idea what was the number of
achieved laps to beat. Here Mikael Silén (S) - who won earlier two wing
car world championships plus the USRA Div 1 G7 Pro Nats - realised a sharp
1033.00 laps. In Group B Josef Korec (CZ) was believed to do better, but,
unfortunately he lost early in the race some 40 laps in the pits. So the winner
was perhaps to be found in Group A. Here Vladimir Horky (CZ) and Mario
"MSP" Schöne (D) were leading during the first half of the race at the same
pace as Silén. Then we lost Schöne and it seemed that Horky was on his way to
win his ... 32nd world championship. With one stint left his final lap total was
forecasted at 1034 laps, enough to win. Unfortunately Jan Žemli¢a
(CZ) who was following as second to Horky made of the
last stint the start of a crash fest. That made Horky deslotting and being at
once in problems as his car at once stopped going. It was only a small problem
(braids up) but it made him loosing eight or nine laps, enough to loose the
race. So Mikael Silén (S) won his third wing car world
champion-ship, ahead over a fantastic Forrest Watchers (USA) - who last
year finished already as runner-up - and over Vladimir Horky (CZ) & Zdenek
Benes (CZ). By his strong performance Silén gave full evidence that Swedish
wing car racing is still alive, despite the decreasing number of Swedish wing
car racers.
By finishing tenth overall Marcelo Triginelli (BR) won 1.5 IOC points,
just enough of exceeding a 120 IOC points total and entering now the historical
elite of the pro racers as 163rd racer to realise the historical pro class.
Among the semi-pros the unlucky Jan Žemli¢a (CZ)
was the fastest letting Per Persson (S) and Jimmy Lee (USA?)
behind. |

24TH G27
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, PLZEN (CZ), MAY 19, 2011 [Level
2
IOC RACE -
14 PROS] |
|
ISAIAS JORDAÕ BEATS "GUGU" & HEIKO THINSCHMIDT |
|
May 20, 2011 - We find
26 racers at the start, 14 of them having the pro status. Germany is
present with eight racers, Czechia with five, Sweden with four,
Brazil and Finland with three, Argentine with two, the USA and
Sint-Maarten with one. Remarkable absentee is Vlado Okali who
won no less than four world championships in G27. Missing too is
that other G27 specialist Stefan Törnfeldt. With Horky (IOC
#1), Korec (IOC #2), "Gugu" (IOC #6) and "Beuf" (IOC #9) we have
four top-10 racers at the start. Fastest qualifier is Luiz "Gugu"
Bernardino in a sharp 1"653 (is this a world record in
G27?) Second best time goes to the 2010 OMO world champion Isaias
Jordaõ in
1"682. Third best time goes to the five-fold G7 wing car
world champion Paul "Beuf" Pedersen in 1"693. They are
the three lonely racers going under 1"7. It's decided that there
will be no Semis, so the eight fastest racers at the Quarters will
make directly the move to the Main Final. Of the eight German racers
only one, Heiko Thinschmidt, will reach the Main.
The Czechs loose their absolute star racer, Vladimir Horky
(31 times winner of a world championship) on technical woes, also
local racer Zdenek Benes, the man who won at the 1988 Chicago
IMCA Worlds a 1/1 Pontiac Fiero. Petr Krcil & Josef Korec
are the two Czechs making the move. Brazil proves once more its
actual superiority in wing car racing as it reaches with all three
its racers the Main: Bernardino, Tavares da Silva & Jordaõ.
The remaining places in the Main go to "Beuf" and to the new
European G7 champion Juha Yli-Sipola. Contrarily to the G27 Light Worlds there is
no fight between the Brazilians and the Czechs as the three
Brazilians are pulling away from the rest of the field.
Unfortunately Felipe Tavares has to let go his two country mates
after technical problems. So Isaias Jordaõ and
"Gugu" Bernardino are now fighting for victory. Eventually Isaias
Jordaõ beats "Gugu", winning his second world championship.
Third place goes to Heiko Thinschmidt. By finishing fourth, fifth
and sixth the trio Petr Krcil, Josef Korec and "Beuf" disappoint.
Fastest semi-pro is Argentine's Jorge Canaves, finishing as
twelfth. No less than 55 entrants are scheduled for the OMO G7
Worlds of Saturday. [JPVR] |

9TH G27
LIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, PLZEN (CZ), MAY 18, 2011 [Level
2 IOC RACE
- 12 PROS] |
|
HAMILTON VERONESE BEATS JOSEF KOREC & PETR KRCIL |
|
Hamilton is the 100th world champion in history - 976 new WR 66 laps
better than old WR |
|
May 20, 2011 - Good
show at the G27 Light Worlds with 34 entries. Of them Brazil and the
USA are present with seven racers each, against five for Czechia and
Germany, three for Finland, two for Argentine, Switzerland (!) and
Slovakia and one for Sint-Maarten. This is already the 210th world
championship (for all classes together: wing, scale, model) since
1978. The new Zlin King with its larger curbs and its shorter
straights seems the fastest in the world. On this track G27 Light
cars (the future in wing car racing?) go faster than OMO G7 cars on
other tracks. TQ went to ex-world champion Petr Krcil in
1"877 with Fabio Signoretti (1"897) end Will W.H.
Skinner (1"899) as runner-ups. Some top racers did not enter,
among them Vladimir Horky, Mikail Silén, Mario "MSP" Schöne and the
new European G7 champion Juha Yli-Sipola. Three main
favourites - Vlado Okali, Bill W.H. Skinner and Heiko
Thinschmidt were already eliminated after the Quarter finals.
Especially the elimination of Skinner was painful as he realised at
the Quarters the ninth most laps, unfortunately in a Quarter were
four others were still faster. At the Semi finals the
three first places go to Josef Korec - winner of the three
first Worlds in G27 Light - with 722.06 laps, to Fabio Signoretti
with 722 laps and to Petr Krcil with 721.01 laps. Among
the eight eliminated racers we found surprisingly the five fold wing
car world champion Paul "Beuf" Pedersen (only his second show
in Europe after having been present at the Ultimate G7 Race of 2004)
and Klaus Wickert. The Germans, very familiar with the new
King track, have not one single racer in the Main. Here Brazil
trusts four of the eight places with Tavares, "Gugu", Signoretti
and Veronese. We find three Czechs in the Main: Korec,
Krcil and the new comer Jan Kacerovský, causing a stir by
being so well placed. The last place among the finalists goes to
America's Les Wright. In a splendid final where we
witness a gruelling combat between the Czechs and the Brazilians,
all records are broken. Finishing as seventh Les Wright still
improves the WR by eleven laps! In front the two best Czech
racers (Korec and Krcil) are fighting a battle on live or death with
the surprisingly fast Hamilton Veronese, he himself no pro
but a semi pro (less than 120 IOC points). Eventually he is
more than two laps faster than his two famous Czech opponents. He
wins the race with 976.09 laps, an unbelievable fast world
record. He is the 100th world champion in slot-racing history and
his pic has been added to the golden gallery of world champions (click
here to see them all hundred). The results confirms a new trend in
wing car racing where the Brazilians are since last year obviously
the most consistent and fastest wing car racers in the world, faster
than the Americans, the Czechs and the Finns. But where are the
Swedish??? [JPVR] |

1ST G12 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, PLZEN (CZ), MAY 16, 2011 [NO
IOC RACE < 8 PROS] |
|
PAVEL
FLAISIG WINS - OTA PACES & VOJTIK ONLY 4TH & 5TH |
|
May 20, 2011 - ESROC
organises at the super fast King track of Zlin the first official
world championship for G12 wing cars. In total 22 racers showed,
among them four from Germany, two from Argentine and one from
Brazil; With Antónin Vojtik, Osvaldo Vaccari and Ota Paces
we found three former world champions at the start, being all
three serious candidates to win this first G12 wing car worlds. That
they were very serious contenders as already obvious at the
qualifications where Ota Paces realised TQ in 2"170 with
Osvaldo Vaccari as third in 2"194. The Brazilian, however,
had bad luck in the quarter finals where he was eliminated with
technical woes.
Special attention went to good
old Erich Lorenz, who in the 1980s was a team mate of Axel
Pomeranz and Achim Burgmann. At the famous Pinky Point
Trophy with a 1/1 Ferrari 308 GTB as first prize the duo Lorenz/Pommeranz
was regularly among the top-5 and after the first year still a
contender to win the first prize. But after 1986 Erich Lorenz was no
more seen in competition ... during 25 years. At the Zlin G12 Worlds
he made his come back to wing car racing with a tenth place in the
overall standing.
Paces and Vojtik reached both
the main final without any problem, but the new favourite was now
Jan Žemli¢a
who was fastest, both at the quarter finals as at the semi finals.
When everybody speculated that he was the man able to beat Paces and
Vojtik, the surprise came from Pavel Flaisig, the ISRA scale
racer. With 842 laps (probably a new world record in G12) he was 13
laps faster than Jan Žemli¢a
and17 than Josef Kacir. Paces came no further tan the
fourth place and Vojtik no further than the fifth place. For Flaisig
it was his first world title. [JPVR] |

43RD ESROC
OPEN G7 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP, BRÜHL (D), MARCH 20, 2011 [Level
2
IOC RACE -
13 PROS] |
|
JUHA
YLI-SIPOLA WINS HIS FOURTH ESROC G7 NATS |
|
April 9, 2011 - The
European wing car season 2011 started at Plzen with two new world
records, one in Group 7 for Mario "MSP" Schöne (1317 laps)
and one for Heiko Thinschmidt in Omo G7 (1044 laps). That the new
Blue King track at Plzen is the fastest in Europe was proven in
February at the Wing Car Worlds Warm-Up races. At the main final in
G7 seven of the eight finalists realised more than 1225 laps with
1307 laps for the winner. At once the Brühl Blue King track is no
longer interesting for most European speed freaks. In three months
time it became a ... "slow" track, no longer attractive for those
who wish to win the Plzen Wing Car Worlds in May. That may explain
the real poor entry at this year's ESROC G7 Nats. World record
holder Mario "MSP" Schöne, winner of five European G7
Championships (1990, 1191, 1997, 1998, 2009), was not interested to
start on such ... slow (sic) track. And he was not alone. The three
best wing car racers from Czechia, Vladimir Horky (winner of
31 world championships in all specialities, winner of the ESROC Nats
in 2000, 2002 and 2004 and IOC #1), Josef Korec (winner of 13
world championships and IOC #2) and Petr Krcil (winner of
four world championships and IOC #14) preferred to stay home. So of
the Czechs only Zdenek Benes showed to defend his title. But
also the Swedes showed no interest in the 2011 ESROC Nats. Their
three best wing car racers Mikael Silén (winner of the Nats
in 2005), Anders Gustafson (winner of the Nats in 1999) and
Lasse Åberg
(winner of the Nats in 1986-1987-1988) stayed all three home. Same
story for the Finnish aces. Of them Leo Hongisto (winner of
the Nats in 1992, 1993 and 2008) Marko Pirinen (winner of the
Nats in 2001), Kimmo Rautama (winner of the Nats in 2006) and
Petteri Pirhonen preferred not to start. Of all winners of
the ESROC G7 Nats since 1985 only Juha Yli-Sipola (winner in
1995, 1996 and 2007) and Zdenek Benes (winner in 2010) were
present. In the 43 year old story of ESRAC/ESROC G7 racing such was
only seen in the three first years, later no more. Entrance at Brühl
was the lowest in European G7 history. With only 22 entrants (6 from
Germany, 5 from Finland, 3 from the USA, 3 from Brazil, 3 from
Sweden, 1 from Slovakia and 1 from Czechia) the sympathetic Peter
Fröbel was certainly not rewarded for all the efforts he did for
the renewal of European wing car racers. Entry was even lower than
in December at the German Wing Car Masters.
It was thus highly predictable that Juha Yli-Sipola should
win his fourth ESROC G7 Nats; He finished eight laps ahead over
Ulf Edgar Pietsch and twenty over Vlado Okali. His 1124
achieved laps are an anachronism in postmodern wing car racing. Or
look at TQ, 1"590 for Vlado Okali), that's even above the
1"588 world record achieved by Mario "MSP" Schöne in ... 2003. The
actual world record is 1"404, hold by America's Paul
"Beuf" Pedersen. In open class wing car racing everything
turns around speed, speed and speed. If wing car racers can no
longer find it on the five year old Brühl track, they look for
faster tracks or in Europe, or in the States or in Brazil. It's well
that Peter Fröbel anticipated on this. In January he went with 14
German racers to ultra fast Plzen King for the Czech Masters. In
February he did it over with 6 German racers for the Worlds Warm-Up
race. One could have expected some reciprocity from the Czech
racers. But no, they did show with only ... one racer. What a shame.
That to has never been seen in the long history of European wing car
racing. Eventually Peter Fröbel found only 13 pros at the start of
his 43rd G7 Wing Car Nats, just enough to obtain the IOC level 2 for
the Open G7 race. That too feels as painful. [JPVR] |

26TH ESROC G27 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP, BRÜHL (D),
MARCH
18, 2011 [Level
3
IOC RACE -
9 PROS] |
|
KLAUS
WICKERT WINS G27 FROM OKALI & THINSCHMIDT |
|
April 9, 2011 - Of the thirteen pros
having competed the G7 Nats four did not enter the G27 race: Les
Wright (USA), Jose Mario Serra (BR), Jari Porttinen (SF) and Felipe
Tavares da Silva (BR). When Tavares entered international
competition in 2007 he won nearly any race he entered, but the last
months top results remained away. Let's hope that he'll find back
his good shape at the May Wing Car Worlds at Plzen. With only nine
pros at the start the 26th edition of the ESROC G27 Nats came
three pros short to be considered as an IOC event of rank 2. After
Austria's great Martin Gramann having passed away G27 racing
is the big speciality of such guys as Stefan Törnfeldt and
Vlado Okali. For this year's race they were my two favourites.
Unfortunately Törnfeldt missed the move to the main by one lap, so
Okali was the man to beat. In G7 he won no less than five world
championships and five European Championships. Of the 21 racers at
the start Okali is the lonely one having won earlier the European
G27 Nats. Did you know that never a racer from Finland won ESROC
G27? Juha Yli-Sipola finished three times as runner-up, but
never won ESROC G27. So he seemed to be the most dangerous outsider
to hold off Vlado Okali from a sixth European title. G27 lost
much of its popularity the last years. It's expensive and has been
overshadowed the last years by OMO G7 racing, an idea launched in
2000 by the triple world champion Paul Pfeiffer. I was always
wondering why G27 racing was not to be replaced by OMO G7 racing,
but it never happened. Slot-racers are conservative people. They
never abolish a class, they just add always new classes to existing
ones. In the States even G15 racing - having been never popular in
Europe - is even practiced until to day, despite the fact that
organisers of such races have all the problems of the world to fill
eight lanes for such events. |
|
 |
|
Qualifications were won by "Gugu" Bernardino
in 1"774. After having won four of the five races at
the Worlds Warm-Up races at Plzen in February he's in extremely good
shape and another dangerous candidate who Okali will find on his way
to victory lane. 1"774 is a sharp time. At the Czech Masters at
Plzen nobody went under that time. The nine pros having started
easily survived the quarter finals and eight of them survived the
semis with only poor Stefan Törnfeldt being eliminated. In the main
final Okali found Germany's Klaus Wickert on his wave. He
came ten laps short to beat the German. Heiko Thinschmidt
completed the German success by finishing third, eight laps below
Okali. I saw Klaus Wickert the first time at rounds #2 and #3 of
the Pinky Point meeting at the Antwerp Crest Hotel in 1985. At that
meeting no less than six vintage 1/1 Hondas S800 could be won. There
were 98 entrants and Wickert, driving a Porsche 904 GTS fit on a Cox
Cucaracha chassis was one of the 32 racers to be qualified for the
big 12 hour race. His team mate was Ralph Klose - in that day
the dreamed successor of Bernd Möbus and Achim Burgmann,
who were the stars of their time wing car racing. Möbus, driving
with the late Martin Gramann failed to win the 12 hour race.
Victory was for the Americans Csaba Szekelyhidi/John Strachan,
heading Möbus/Gramann and Joel Montague/Jon Laster.
The young Wickert, having started in twelfth position, moved up at
mid-race to rank eight and eventually finished with Klose as ninth,
a very fine result if one knows that he was preceded by such racers
as Paul Pfeiffer, P-A Watson, Sergio Maresca, Franco Gianotti,
Janne Ekman, Bjarne Lilliendahl. That day Ralph Klose told me
that his team mate Wickert should once win the G7 Worlds. Now I
believe this prophetic words. [JPVR] |

IOC RACE -

|
U-E
PIETSCH WINS OMO G7 FROM TÖRNFELDT & THINSCHMIDT |
|
April 10, 2011 - OMO G7
racing is since a couple of years the popular speciality in wing car
racing. We find thirteen pros at the start. Total entry is up to
twenty nine racers: ten from Germany, six from Finland, five from
Sweden, three from Brazil, three from the USA, one from Czechia, one
from Slovakia. In OMO G7 it's important to finish in the
qualifications in the top-8, because then one can start in Main A
with the fastest racers. Fastest qualifier is America's Bill
Skinner Jr in 1"791 which is seriously lower than the
1"606 and 1"643 realised by Zdenek Benes, res. at the
Wing War Worlds Warm-Up and at the Czechia Masters. Second best time
is for Heiko Thinschmidt in 1"804, third best for
Klaus Wickert in 1"821. The five other racers qualified
for Main Final A are Zdenek Benes in 1"822, Felipe
Tavares da Silva in 1"823, Peter Fröbel (the first
non-pro racer) in 1"831, Rebecca Fröbel (the second
non-pro racer) in 1"847 and Juha Yli-Sipola in
1"851. The last named won last year the OMO G7 race at the ESROC
Nats and the OMO G7 race at the 2010 German Masters in Brühl.
Surprisingly Ulf Edgar Pietsch who won OMO G7 as well at this
year's Wing Car Worlds Warm-Up as at the Czech Masters, realised
only the seventeenth time in 1"888, which condemns him to the
Main Final C. Nobody believes that he still can win from that
position, but he causes a stir by realising most laps: 887.95
against 865.15 for Sweden's Stefan Törnfeldt and 853.00 for
Heiko Thinschmidt. First amateur is Ricard Jonsson on
rank five, with Hannu Laitinen as second amateur on rank
eight. Number of achieved laps is extremely low compared to 1047
realised by Heiko Thinschmidt at the Wing Car Worlds Warm-Up and the
1044 he realised at the Czech Masters. Thinschmidt is the major
favourite for the upcoming OMO G7 World Championship [JPVR] |

"GUGU" 1307 LAPS BEATS FOR BEST CZECH WING CAR RACERS |
|
April 10, 2011 -
Although entry was low we found the three
best Czech racers at the start: Vladimir Horky, Petr Krcil
and Josef Korec. TQ was for Petr Krcil in 1"517, ahead
over Zdenek Benes in 1"556. They were free from the
Semis where Rainer Borsutzki and Christian Zoch were eliminated.
Peter Fröbel was the lonely non-pro qualified for the Main
Final. The race was dominated by "Gugu" Bernardino who came
ten laps short to improve the new world record which Mario "MSP"
Schöne realised one month earlier at the same track. No racers from
Finland and Sweden showed for the warm-up, which can be a serious
mistake if one wishes to prepair seriously the upcoming worlds in
May. Petr Krcil and Zedenek Benes realised the second
and third place. Vladimir Horky (fifth) and Josef Korec (fourth)
disappointed. It was a very fast race where seven finalists realised
1225 laps or more. |

WARM-UP RACE
OMO G7 WING CAR WORLDS, PLSEN (CZ), FEBRUARY

IOC RACE -

|
HEIKO
THINSCHMIDT BEATS FOUR CZECHS IN OMO G7 |
|
April 10, 2011 -
The OMO G7 race was in all aspects superior to
the G27 race. The Germans were present with no less than six racers,
against five for the Czechs. One Brazilian ("Gugu" Bernardino) and
one Slovak (Vlado Okali) completed the entry field. Vladimir Horky
and Josef Korec did not enter. Just as at the Czech Masters OMO G7
Germany's Heiko Thinschmidt won with 1047 laps, three more
than at the Masters - if I am well informed a 40 minutes world
record. Zdenek Benes realised at the qualifications a new
world record in OMO G7 with a fabulous time: 1"606. The
second place went to Pavel Flaisig, not directly a wing car
racer, but a regular scale racer. The third place was for TQ-ing
Zdenek Benes. With Jan Zemlicka as fourth and Petr
Krcil as fifth, what implies that Germany's Heiko Thinschmidt
let in Czechia four Czech racers behind. The Germans Siggi Glink,
Rainer Borsutzki and Peter Fröbel took the three first places among
the non-pro racers, finishing res. as seventh, eighth and ninth. The
two main finals were full of crashes, because only four racers
reached the chequered flag without technical problems. |

April 10, 2011 -
The three remaining races - G27, G27 Light and
G12 - were all three won by Brazil's "Gugu" Bernardino. As
there were only res. five, three and two pro racers at the start,
none of those races went after IOC points. At those races Vladimir
Horky and Josef Korec did not enter. In G27 light Zdenek Benes
entered no more and in G12 the four best Czech wing car racers were
all four absent. Here the famous ISRA scale racer Antónin Vójtik
entered, conquering the fourth place. In G27 Light and in G12
Argentina's Jorge Cavanes - seen for the first time in
international wing car meeting at last year's Campeonato Brasileiro
- caused a stir by finishing res. third and second. He can be a
dangerous candidate at the lower classes in the May Wing Car World
Championship. In G27 Light we noted a fine performance by
Sigfried Glink, who finished as runner-up, and by Christian
Zoch, who finished as fourth. Petr Krcil disappointed
both in G27 and G27 Light where he finished twice only as sixth. |

MARIO
'MSP" SCHÖNE REALISES NEW G7 WR: 1317 LAPS |
|
Jan &
Petr Krcil's new King is fastest in Europe - Also WR for Pietsch
(OMO) & Horky (G27) |
|
January 25, 2011
- This week-end the first official races were contested on the new
Blue King track that will be used for the Wing Car Worlds of half
May. The track is a design of world champion Petr Krcil. The
wood work was done by his son Jan Krcil. Finishing was done
by the members of the AMDK Plzen where the track was installed. Four
races were scheduled on this new track. Venue from Germany was high
with no less than 12 entrants, among them America's Jeff Mack and
the complete school of Brühl wing car racers, specialised in OMO G7
racing. The Czechs were present with 8 racers, among them the ISRA
scale racer Pavel Flaisig. Not present was Josef Korec, having
limited his racing activities to a couple of races per year. Of the
other racers there was Vlado Okali from Slovakia and Oliver
Sonnbichler of Austria who caused a stir by qualifying among the
3 first, as well in G7, G27 and OMO G7. On Saturday morning the
IOC #1 Vladimir Horky improved the world record over 40
minutes in G27 racing, realising a total of 947 laps. Zdenek
Benes, who qualified in pole position with 1"777, finished as
runner-up. Under the new art. 1.6 the race failed to go after
IOC-points as only 5 pros showed, whilst 8 is the minimum needed for
a race to be recognised as an IOC event. At the OMO G7
race, full evidence was given that the new King track at Plzen is
really fast. Zdenek Benes was again the fastest qualifier, now in
1"643. The race was completely dominated by the Wing Car School
of Brühl, with 5 of their racers in the top-5. The winner, Ulf
Edgar Pietsch, realised 1044 laps, a new world record
over 40 minutes in OMO G7. Peter Fröbel, the owner of the
Brühl Blue King, who finished 4th in G27 was now second, letting
Mario "MSP" Schöne, Heiko Thinschmidt en Klaus Wickert behind him.
Vladimir Horky did not enter the OMO G7 race where rookie Jan
Zemlicka was the first Czech. With 8 pros at the start the race
was an IOC level 3 event.
Last race of the meeting was
the Open G7 race with 14 entrants, 7 of them being Germans. Of the 7
other entrants 4 were from Czechia, 1 American living in Germany, 1
from Slovakia and 1 from Austria. Fastest qualifier was Vlado Okali
in 1"505. Petr Krcil and Oliver Sonnbichler missed the move
to the main final. Michael Kayser caused a stir by reaching
the top-8. No less than 5 Germans were among the best 8, together
with the Czechs Vladimir Horky and Zdenek Benes, and with Slovakia's
Vlado Okali.
That the Plzen Blue King track is the fastest in Europe was again
proven at the G7 race where ex-world champion Mario "MSP" Schöne
realised a new world record over 40 minutes with 1317 laps.
Vladimir Horky, who finished as runner-up, improved with 1298 laps
also the old world record. Just as at the German Masters of December
7 of the 8 finalists achieved more than 1000 laps, even 6 more than
1100 laps. With 8 pros at the start (we wrote their names in bold
face) the race went at level 3 after IOC points. Mario "MSP"
Schöne collected in total 16 IOC points and jumps over Lasse Aberg
(S), Brian Saunders (GB) and Paolo Trigilio (I) to appear again in
the IOC-top-10. Peter Fröbel collected enough points to move from
the amateur's status to the status of semi-pro. I thank Jiri Micek
sr and Zdenek Benes for the received info. [JPVR]
