EWC 2010: WEZEMBEEK-OPPEM (B) APRIL 3-4
9th Endurance World Championship

Due to the economic recession IMCA could not organise the Official 9th Endurance World Championship (EWC) in 2009. The race will be organised together with the 22nd Model Car Sprint Championship during the Easter week-end of 2010, on the IMCA MTT wooden 8-laner which will be moved to Jeugdhuis Merlijn at Wezembeek-Oppem next to Brussels.
The 9th Endurance Worlds will be contested with 24 FIA GT cars, being 1/24th copies of original race cars having been seen in competition at the 2009 FIA GT Spa 24h. Those cars have to respect article 7 of the IMCA Rule Book. Except for the lightning they can use no other parts than those exhaustively mentioned in IMCA's homologation List. There will be three racers per car. Of the 24 selected FIA GT model cars 12 will be of class GT1, 12 of class GT2 and class GT3. On GT1 cars all three the drivers  have in principle the PRO status, which means that they need to have collected at least 120 IOC points. GT2 & GT3 cars have to be driven by racers having the SEMI-PRO status, and having collected less than 120 IOC points.  The 2010 EWC, will go over three sections: one day section of 3 heats over 8 x 7'30,  one night section with lights on the car of 3 heats over 8 x 7'30", and a second day section of 8 x 7'30. That is 3 hours of racing per car. Racers of the GT2 and GT3 cars compete to win the Citation Endurance World Cup for SEMI-PROS where prize for the winning team is €1,000. In each class of 12 cars, racers of the top-10 finishing cars, win res. 30-22.5-18-15-12-9-6-4.5-3-1.5 IOC points, whilst racers of the top-10 finishing cars overall win an extra of 30-22.5-18-15-12-9-6-4.5-3-1.5 IOC points.
The official 9th Endurance World Championship (EWC) will be organised as part of the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Slot-Racing Club Merlijn. Race control will be in hands of Theo Vanginderhuysen and Raymond van Capenhout. Entry fee is included in the global fee of € 100 all racers already paid at the registration. Racers entering exclusively the EWC pay € 50 fee. Tyres - always tagged - have to be paid separately at € 12.50 per pair with a maximum of two pairs per team. Handout of the second pair will only be done during the tyre change after the old tyres came back. Tyre dressing is absolutely forbidden.

NOTES: (1) All entrants do 8 of the 24 stints. (2) On loosing essential parts as the rear spoiler, the splitter, the windshield, rear or lateral windows, etc. it's not allowed to scotch them; they must be replaced by gluing them to the body; (3) tyre change is obligatory for all cars during the night section and must be done in front of the race direction. (4) All cars must be equipped with functioning front and rear lights. At non functioning during the night segment cars will be black flagged. (5) Racers driving a Porsche 997 Cup are allowed to use a version of the wider Porsche 997 GT3-RSR under condition that they adapt the nose section. (6) All racers starting the EWC will receive a personalised purple t-shirt with the logo of our main sponsor. There is no racing without that t-shirt and at the prize giving ceremonial all entrants are expected to show with their purple t-shirt. (7) There are trophies for racers of the top-3 finishing OA standings and for the top-3 at the Citation Endurance Cup (12 cars in total). [JPVR, IY]

In real 1/1 racing the 2009 Spa 24 hours were mainly a competition between the Maseratis and the Corvettes, with the Saleen, Ford GT and Audi R8 LMS as outsiders. In the 1/24th scale edition it will be not else. Main favourites are the #4 Corvette of Nick de Wachter/Alexander Ortmann/Mike Stahl and the #2 Maserati of the Bad Boys. With NDW in the winning mood and his drive to win this year any race he enters, he seems the born winner of the scale edition of the Spa 24 hours. The four most dangerous outsiders are the Corvette #3 of Ralph Seif/Andre Linberg/Ramon Trimborn, the Brazilian Corvette #8 of Bernardino/Montiglio/Inäbnit, the #1 Maserati of the fastest American team (Gawronski/Ursaner/Hershman) and the #33 Maserati of the Sloefspeed youngsters. But what to think about the Saleens? Since the 2006 Barcelona Worlds we know that in model car racing it's the fastest thinkable body, so the #11 Kiwi Saleen and the #108 Saleen of USA II could be a disaster for the Corvettes and the Maseratis. Another fast model car body (low, light and wide) is the Ford GT. Here the team of world champion Des Dekker could cause a stir. Another dangerous outsider for overall victory is the Audi R8 LMS of Fola and his two Slotringer team mates. Last but not least there is the English Nissan 350Z with Graeme Stephenson and Andrew Aynsley being the two fastest Britons in actual racing.
In GT2 and GT3 the 1/1 Spa 24 hours were mainly a struggle between the Porsches 997 and the Ferraris 430. In the 1/24th scale version the Ferraris 430 of Lange & Co (R³) and of USA III will find in the Porsches 997 of the Spaniards (the fastest GT2 team), of Plug/Tenthof/Schwaab, of Gerlach/Höne/Strässer and of Baele/Vanspauwen/Brébois their most dangerous opponents to win the € 1000 prize for the GT2/GT3 cars. Now that Arttu Salomaa is the fastest Finnish youngster, his Porsche 997 could be the big surprise. Dangerous for the Porsches 997 and Ferraris 430 will be the two low, light and wide Fords GT of Van Waaij/Wernery/Job and of the Frenchies. And there is also the Aston Martin of Hubert Jacob & Co who wish to win a maximum of IOC-points. [IY]
