DEFINITIVE VERSION - SEPTEMBER 2009

21st IMCA 2009 MODEL CAR SPRINT WORLDS

The Battle with the Gods in memory of the Great Jon Laster

Oct 31 - Nov 1, 2009:  Herentals (B) - € 3,000 CASH ON PRICES

   THE BATTLE WITH THE GODS
The 2009 IMCA worlds are the real last ones I'll organise, as next year I'll start my proper publishing company. Having never had the smallest commercial interests on promoting slot-racing I'll do for the last time a serious effort for my last promotion action. At my last Worlds I invited the best racers on earth - the very Gods of slot-racing. The invited Gods that are Vlado Okali (SVK), Vladimir Horky (CZ), Josef Korec (CZ), 'Piki' van Rossem (B), Gabriel Inäbnit (CH), Petr Krcil (CZ), Paul Gawronski (USA), Brian Saunders (GB), Giovanni Montiglio (I), Sergio Maresca (I), plus the mythic legends of the 1960s-1970s: Howie Ursaner (USA), Terry Schmid (USA), and Fred Hood (USA). Never in history they were seen together around the same track, and never later they'll be any-more. That makes the Battle with the Gods a unique historical event. Normally the great Jon Laster  should have been among the Gods. Unfortunately he passed away one night after he confirmed his entry...
Racing perfectly equal performing cars, together with the Gods and Half-Gods  is the ultimate dream of most model car racers. The promotional value of such experiment is several times higher than professional racers can imagine. Especially young people are impressed by the possibility that, perhaps one day, they'll be able to compete with the absolute stars of international slot-racing.  IMCA top events as the proposed one result always in demands of several dozens of new comers and home racers how they can enter competition at such high level. Prize money is up to € 3,000 cash, with € 1,500 for the winner of the Procar BMW M1 Race for PROS (GODS & HALF-GODS) and € 1,000 for the winner of the F430 Citation Cup Sprint Worlds for SEMI-PROS & AMATEURS (NORMAL MORTALS). There is € 500 for the Concourse winner (F430 & BMW M1 together).

IMPORTANT: ALL RACERS MUST BE PRESENT ON SATURDAY MORNING AT 7AM!

     21st IMCA NATS: SURVEY
l
The 21st Model  Car 1/24th Sprint Worlds PRO will be organised on Saturday and Sunday October 31-November 1, 2009. Location is definitively the IMCA MTT track at Herentals (B). The Battle with the Gods (as 21st IMCA Sprint Worlds), preceded by two Gianotti Trophy warm-up races, will be contested exclusively on Saturday, with 26 identical handout 1/24th Procar BMWs M1 assembled for BMW Switzerland by Michael Niemas, and all achieving similar performances. For that race we selected 26 racers: 13 GODS and 13 HALF-GODS, all PROS. The PRO racers need to race uniquely on Saturday. There is € 1,500 for the SPRINT WORLDS PRO winner with the 1/24th Procar BMW M1s. [Prize money has to be wired on the winner's bank account for fiscal reasons. Wiring will be done in November.]
l The 1/24th Sprint Worlds for NON-PROs - officially the 1st Citation Cup Worlds - also preceded by two Gianotti Trophy warm-up races are contested with own 1/24th Fujimi Ferrari F430 Challenge cars on Sunday. There is € 1,000 for the CITATION CUP winner with the 1/24th Fujimi Ferraris F430 Challenge. Wiring of prize money will be done in November on the winner's personal bank account.
l Both 1/24th Sprint Worlds are preceded on Saturday Morning by the 12th Model Car 1/32nd Production Worlds, contested with handout 1/32nd NSR Moslers 900MT. This curtain raiser will be open for all PROS and for all invited NON-PROs, thus for all entrants.
l On Saturday evening all invited KIDS (16 in total) will contest the 12th Mello Yello Junior Worlds with 16  handout 1/24th Procar BMWs M1 made by Niemas.
NOTE: € 500 FOR THE CONCOURSE WINNER (F430s & BMW M1s together; maximum one car per competitor). All prize money must be wired on the winner's bank account for fiscal reasons. Wiring will be done in November.
Racers coming from overseas will - if they want so - have their transport costs being reimbursed by IMCA. As we didn't expect that we should have to organise the 21st Model Car Worlds ourselves we could not find a last minute sponsoring budget for the whole event, especially not for the Endurance Worlds. So we postponed the 9th Official Endurance World Championship to April 5-6. 2010.

After the four races one adds all points won by the Gods and all points won by the Halfgods. The team having collected most points wins the match.

REMARK: The GODS are all but one wing car racers and/or ISRA scale car racers. The HALFGODS are all but one model car racers. So, in fact its a competition of the model car racers (HALFGODS) versus the scale & wing car racers (GODS). The model car racers believe of themselves that they are much better racers than the scale and wing car racers. That seems to be a well-spread myth. So let's see who is right by letting both groups racing equally prepared cars. The GODS will be present in purple t-shirts with their name in yellow letters. The HALFGODS will be present in purple t-shirts with their name in white letters. On the back of their t-shirt the GODS will have no number, only the word "GOD". For the HALFGODS that will be their actual IOC ranking number.

§ 1. THE TRACK AT THE 21ST IMCA WORLDS SPRINT

§ 2. THE CARS AT THE 21ST IMCA WORLDS SPRINT

HISTORY OF 1979 PROCAR  -  HISTORY OF 1980 PROCAR

The 1/24th Model Car Sprint World Championship returns this year to its 1985-2003 roots. nl. a race for sprinters, not for constructors. That implies that the 26 top racers will have to drive a handout 1/24th scale Procar BMW M1 cars - all nearly equally performing - have been attributed randomly. The new Sprint Worlds format has the major advantage that NSRA/ESROC/NPRA wing car racers and ISRA scale racers can compete with equal weapons with the typical model car racers. It allows a much more competitive entry field with much more top racers.
Distribution of the handout cars has been done in function from the wishes of our 6 sponsors. Racers who want so, going after the € 500.00 Concourse Prize, can enter a concourse car with the same characteristics as the original one. Only unmodified Revell Procar BMW M1 bodies are allowed. Concourse bodies cannot be used at racing, only at Concourse. Use of lexan windows is strictly forbidden.   Nothing on the RTR chassis may me changed. All cars have been assembled by Michael Niemas and recent tests prove that they all perform a fastest lap around 7.94 and 7.99 seconds. Any form of tyre dressing is absolutely forbidden.

In the history of slot-racing 182 world championships have be organised, won by 83 different racers. At the 21st IMCA Worlds we find 16 of those racers at the start having won no less than 87 world championships. Never in the history of slot-racing such extraordinary group of absolute top-racers was seen together. Never more in the future such a strong field will be found together around the same track at the same moment. So the 21st IMCA Worlds will be an absolute unique event which will still be remembered during several decades. Those who'll be absent will deplore it their whole life that they missed such event which NEVER more will come back. It's my very last organisation of an international race. Up from April 2010 it's up to Raymond van Campen-hout and his friends to continue my work. It will also be the very last race I still will dispute.

 2.B. CITATION CUP 1/24 WORLDS: THE FUJIMI FERRARIS F430

PROS are racers having won in their career more than 100 IOC-points. If one consults the International Overall Classification (the famous IOC list) one finds that only 114 racers in the long history of slot-racing reached the status of PRO. The future of our sport, however, are the SEMI-PROS and the AMATEURS. For them we organise this year an OFFICIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SPRINT FOR NON PROS. The winner receives the official rainbow shirt plus € 1,000 cash. It can be a very interesting competition with such Germans as Andre Linberg, Ramon Trimborn, Mark Kurella, Marcel Kuhn and Sven Manti fighting against Carlos Checa (last year still finalist at the Sprint Worlds), Desmond Dekker (NL), Mike Stahl (USA), the young Björn van Campenhout (B), Kristof Huys (B), the Salomaa Bros (SF) , Dirk Baele (B), the French Havet Bros) and the returning Hubert Jacob who'll receive for this race the car Ralph Seif prepared last year for "Piki". Perhaps more than Linberg, Hubert Jacob will be the man to beat at the 1st Citation Cup Sprint Worlds.

IMPORTANT NOTE: BMW M1 racers (GODS and/or HALFGODS) having entered an F430 at last year's IMCA Worlds are asked to bring that car to the raceway as some Citation Cup amateurs have no competitive car or not the correct body. That is asked to: Tim Tyler, Fred Hood, Ralph Seif, Alexander Ortmann, Christian Schnitzler, Giovanni Montiglio, Michael Niemas, Christoph Kremer, Philipp Kremer, "Javi" Checa Lozano, Marcel Oosterling and Hugo Dekker. DON'T FORGET!

§3. THE RACERS AT THE 21ST IMCA WORLDS SPRINT

THE MERCILESS COMBAT WITH THE GODS

If one compares actual slot-racing with racing from a quarter ago, it stirs that FUN nearly completely disappeared. But let's have FUN again at my very last IMCA Sprint Worlds. Several model car racers believe they are the best racers on earth. Of course that's not true. The best racers on earth are ALL-ROUNDERS being able to win with ANY car, from a very simple box stock 1/32nd plastic car to a very complicated ISRA ES24 car to an ultra fast Open G7 car. Such ALL-ROUNDERS are the Gods of slot-racing. They can give the Half-Gods of model car racing a simple lesson in modesty, although such racers as Ralph Seif, Alex Ortmann, Philipp Kremer or Michael Niemas come surely with the intention to beat ... the Gods. . On Saturday Gods & Half-Gods contest four races:
l The 12th Production Worlds with 1/32nd handout NSR Moslers;
l The 21st Benelux Cup warm-up with 1/24th handout Procar BMW M1s;
l The 17th EuroNats Sprint warm-up with 1/24th handout Procar BMW M1s;
l The 21st IMCA Model Car Worlds Sprint with 1/24th handout BMW M1s.
Let's give the 10 first of the three first named racers res. 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point(s), and the double of it at the last named race. Let's make a separate ranking of the 10 best ranked "geezers" (
l) for bonus points, being half of the normal points. And let we add all won points. Then we can see if the Half-Gods can beat the legendary Gods
Of course the
Gods deserve divine cars. And if we look after the most divine One-Make Series for race cars, there is only one worth the Gods: the 1979 Procar BMW M1 Series. There the five best qualifiers of the preceding F1 Grand Prix were the Gods, receiving a real works BMW M1. The rest of the field went to the Half-Gods waiting to enter F1 racing, and to the Ordinary Mortals having never been personally involved in F1 racing. The Gods won the Series with Niki Lauda (A) having won 3 of the 8 rounds, with Clay Regazzoni (CH) finishing as 3rd, Nelson Piquet (BR) finishing as 6th, Jacques Lafitte (F) finishing as 7th, Didier Pironi (F) finishing as 8th and Alan Jones (AU) finishing as 10th. Except for two they won all rounds. The Half-Gods finished with Hans-Joachim Stuck (D) as 2nd and Helmut Kelleners (D) as 9th. The Ordinary Mortals finished with Markus Höttinger as 4th and with Toine Hezemans as 5th. Time for a modal car version of the Battle with the Gods.

§4. IN MEMORY OF JON LASTER (1954-2009)

     IN MEMORY OF JON LASTER
The first racer I invited for the BATTLE WITH THE GODS WORLDS was Jon Laster. Of the several thousand racers with who I was corresponding Jon Laster was the one I mailed the most and of who I received the most mails. I met him for the first time in 1985 at the Antwerp Crest Hotel where in an endurance race he was the team mate of Joel Montague, being involved in a gruelling combat with Csaba Szekelyhidi/John Strachan, Paul Pfeiffer/P-A Watson, Bernd Möbus/Martin Gramann and Franco Gianotti/Corina Gianotti. They finished on the five first places with Csaba's team as winner. It's hard to believe, but of those 10 magnificent racers already three passed away: Franco Gianotti in 2002, Martin Gramann early 2009 and Jon Laster one day after he let understand that he should come out of retirement to do the Battle with the Gods Worlds.
Most of the discussions with Jon - who was a brilliant intellectual - went on politics in the States, seldom on slot-racing politics. Jon always defended original viewpoints. He had a critical spirit and an apart sense for humour, which - I guess - he had in common with his spiritual father, Camen's Joel Montague. In our last mails we discussed also about the 1979 Procar BMW M1 series, having been won by Niki Lauda. As always Jon gave full evidence that he knew very well the Procar Series. Our discussions went on the young Hans-Georg Bürger and Markus Höttinger. Both passed away in 1980. It led us to a discussion how fragile is life. Although Jon suffered from lung cancer, he seemed not afraid to die of it, he was much more afraid of his coughing fits, just as if he felt how he should die one day later. Indeed, during a coughing fit, when phoning with his sister, his aorta (the largest blood vessel in the body) ruptured. The day he passed away I received exactly 119 mails from racers telling me the horrible news. Although Jon retired from active racing a decade earlier, it proves at what point he was admired by other slot-racers.
From 1985 to 1989 Jon came regularly to Europe and more than once we raced together at the famous Pinky Point Series with a Ferrari 308 GTB (1/1) as first prize. During a 24 hour on the Uden King we were, thanks to my team mate Jon, royally out on the lead when at the banking I made a terrible mistake, bending the chassis. Quiet as always, Jon rebuilt completely the piano wire chassis and we came back from the one but last to the third place.
Concerning the 1979 Procar races Jon wondered how a young racer as Markus Höttinger (insert left under) - only 22 years old - could finish fourth in the series with a privately entered car (Jon even remembered the sponsors!) in a competition with six works cars (seven if one counts Lauda's) with the best F1 racers of that time behind the wheel. And yes, if he entered, he wished absolutely race a copy af Höttringer's car, just as if they were already tied by death. When Jon passed away I was terribly depressed. I daren't to write Joel Montague if he wished to drive the #44 DS Tuning Castrol in memory of Jon. For me Joel and Jon were nearly one and the same person. Writing to Joel was in my eyes something as trying to communicate over the borders of life and death. When Joel eventually answered me that he should try to show it was for me perhaps the greatest honour of my life. On October 31 we all will race in memory of the Great Jon Laster!
