FINAL ROUND BEL LMS, DECEMBER 18, 2009: DISON (B)  [IOC LEVEL 2]

FALLEN GOD NDW BEATS THE GODS BY NO LESS THAN 33 LAPS

NICK DE WACHTER HAD NOT ONLY THE BEST CAR, HE WAS ALSO  - BY FAR - THE BEST RACER

December 27, 2009 - All scheduled IOC races for model cars were already finished with the last race at the 21st IMCA Worlds. Nobody could expect that the final round of the Bel LMS should be - despite heavy snow - such a big success. Indeed no less than six world champions came at the start: Ralph Seif (D) (1 world title), Björn van Campen-hout (B) (1 world title), Georges Baikry (B) (2 world titles), Michael Niemas (D) (2 world titles), Nick de Wachter (NL) (5 world titles) and "Piki" van Rossem (B) (7 world titles). That means 6 world champions, having won together 18 titles, which is enough for IOC points at level 2 (as explained else). The evening before the race I was informed that the entry field was of excellent quality, because apart of those six official world champions there were also Gabe Inäbnit (CH) who won in 2004 at Uden the non official worlds for amateurs, also Tamar Nelwan (NL) who won in 2005 in Aalst the non official constructor's world championship, and also Fola Osu (NIG) who won in 2007 in Mechelen the non official worlds for amateurs. Present too was Andre Linberg (D), the 2009 rookie of the year with a historical number of won IOC points during his first year as international racer.
Race went at Dison Mini Racing where Piki won in 2003 his nicest race, the 132 Production Worlds, where all entrants received one hour before the start a kit of an NSR car which each entrant had to assemble himself. Track was the one the late Perry Dekker built in 1993 in view of the 1994 ISRA Worlds. Together with Perry and Jan Limpach we set this very track up in Dordrecht and we drove on it as the real first racers a slot-car. At the 1994 ISRA Worlds, on this track, Sergio Maresca (I) was disqualified as winner of the ES32 Worlds by race director Raymond van Campenhout (B) for a too low clearance. Later the track was sold to Olivier Demoget (F) - one of the best French IMCA racers - who sold it last year to André Colson (B) of the DMR. For me enough reasons to show as a spectator.
Except for the Belgians, involved at most rounds of the Bel LMS, the top racers had to start in the first heat over 8 x 15 minutes. NDW showed with his Gil de Ferran Acura, which he raced at the EEC 2009, and which won round #4 in Oslo. He showed with Ralph Seif, Andre Linberg and Sven Manti (D) as team mates. Michael Niemas showed with the same Audi R8 which won at the Alsdorf Spa track the final round of the EEC 2009. He had "Piki" van Rossem and Dirk Baele (B) as team mates. Fola Osu came at the start with his Peugeot 908 which at the final round of the EEC 2009 failed to win the last round for less than one lap. We found thus three excellent cars at the start, and a thrilling race was expected (with 63 starters, despite heavy snow storms).

However, already after less than five minutes, all spectators knew it: today nobody should be able to defeat NDW. O.K., he improved the set-up of his car, where Niemas and Fola failed to do great efforts to improve their car. But that should be a too meagre explanation for their defeat. Having started on lane 7 - a fast one - Nick de Wachter smashed them all K.O. Of all the races I saw him driving, it was in my eyes by far his best race. He deslotted not once and pulverised all track records. His car was a rocket faultless driven during the first 15 minutes. With 111 laps he let the Fola machine 13 laps behind and the Niemas Audi R8 (on the slowest lane, driven by Dirk Baele) no less than 18 laps. How superb NDW was driving is perhaps the best illustrated by the fact that amateur Dirk Baele was at the end of all runs the ... fastest racer on lane 1. During the second run, now on lane 8, NDW continued to destroy all other competitors, now achieving 108 laps. After two segments he alone put the Fola team on 22 laps and the Niemas/Piki/Baele team on 28 laps. NDW - of course that his place is among the Gods - was by miles the best racer at Dison, and this with a perfect legal car. The others had not to search excuses: today they were sharply beaten in an open confrontation.
During the five following segments the Fola/Nelwan/Inäbnit car lost more than 30 laps in the pits for all kinds of small repairs. Now that NDW was no longer driving Niemas/Piki/Baele succeeded to reduce their arrears. But after 7 out of 8 segments their arrears on the NDW Acura was still 17 laps and they could forget to beat Nick's team. The 17 laps difference was maintained until the three last minutes, when Niemas - struggling with braids problems - lost another 16 laps. At the finish the "fallen God" - NDW who created his own endurance series and planned his own worlds, far from what IMCA does - had no less than 33 laps over the Gods Niemas and Piki. Perhaps the sharpest defeat of their life! In 2010 they'll meet NDW at the rounds for the European Plafit Championship, but NDW gave full evidence that in that series he'll be the man to beat.
A surprise was that the team of Björn van Campenhout finished only seventh overall, just enough to prevent that René "Lange" Vanden berghe/Nando Corral/Robert Massart - who finished 3rd overall with a simple GT car - could win the championship. Fine performance also by Harry van Avensdath (NL)/Robby Worms (B) who finished fifth overall, only one lap down to the Fola/Inäbnit/Nelwan car, but five ahead over Hubert Jacob (F)/Pierre-Yves Deblanc (B)/Didier Ronvaux (B). André Colson (B), racing with ex-world champion George Baikry (B) finished just out of the points, but he can be proud to be the best organiser I saw during the last 10 years. Congratulations.

21ST IMCA WORLDS  OCTOBER 31, 2009: A SYNOPSIS - HERENTALS (B)  [IOC LEVEL 3]

M. NIEMAS WINS 124 WORLDS, DESMOND DEKKER 132 WORLDS & MELLO YELLO WORLDS, B. VAN CAMPENHOUT WINS CITATION CUP

Piki van Rossem (2 x 1st, 2 x 2nd, 1 x 4th) wins most IOC points at 21st IMCA Worlds

At the 21st IMCA Worlds the strongest entry field ever was seen in the Pro races. Here from left to right Josef Kore"c (CZ, IOC #2, 10 x world champion), "Piki" van Rossem (B, IOC #3, 7 x world champion, Fred Hood (USA), Michael Niemas (D, IOC #8, 2 x world champion), Desmond Dekker (NL, IOC #74, 2 x world champion), Vladimir Horky (CZ, IOC #1, 28 x world champion) and Chris Radisich (NZ).

October 4, 2009 - My real last IMCA Worlds, already the 21st,were undoubtedly the best I organised in my long career as promoter of slot-racing. The entry field was just a dream, the atmosphere was one of total fun, and at no moment there was even a fraction of a second of stress. The race direction, under the lead of Theo Vanginderhuysen, took this time 8 hours of time to control all cars. Best thing was to split all races, except the 132 Production Worlds, in one for Pros and another for Semi-Pros. It resulted in both classes in extremely close racing where after 32 minutes the difference between the first and the last of a heat was in most races as less as two laps. The battle among the Gods and the Half-Gods, over five rounds, was convincingly won by the Gods with 4 to 1, despite the fact the the Half-Gods - all from Germany - took the three first places at the 124 Sprint Worlds for Pros. Over five races the Gods won 466 points against 258.5 for the Half-Gods. At the Half-Gods Philipp Kremer was replaced by Desmond Dekker, Christoph Kremer by Gilles Dohogne.
The 132 Production Race with the NSR Moslers was - contrarily to the mess of last year - appreciated by all entrants. It seemed that "Piki" should win the race by two segments from Chris Radisich, but in the real last heat Holland's Desmond Dekker had a clear race and did five laps more than "Piki". What happened? An analysis of the realised lap times (lap per lap) showed that "Piki" realised sharper lap times than Des. Unfortunately he had to face no less than 24 track calls against only 3 for Des. At an average track call 3.2 seconds are lost. To avoid such situations the 132 Production Worlds should be organised following the Qualifications-Consis-Quarters-Semis_Main formula. I hope that Raymond van Campenhout, who'll organise the 22nd IMCA Worlds in 2010, will consider this advice.
The two warm-up races for Pros for the Franco Gianotti Trophy were fully dominated by Piki van Rossem and Michael Niemas. Twice Piki's BMW M1 crossed the finish line as first, but at the Nenelux Cup Niemas's car covered a longer distance with the power cut off than Piki's. Close racing could hardly be closer than that, no? Desmond Dekker, Chris Radisich and Paul Gawronski were the other stars at the Gianotti Trophy. In the ranking Piki leads Niemas, Dekker, Radisich, Gawronski and Maresca. The last name realised a seventh place overall at the 132 Production Race and a fourth at the EuroNats. Seventeen years of inactivity required their due.
The main race was of course the 124 Sprint Worlds for Pros. Here Sergio Maresca retired before the start as winning seemed impossible for him - a born winner. Desmond Dekker had bad luck on Maresca's car (being free after Sergio's retirement). In the previous year the #61 Abel Lepitre BMW M1 made a minor crash. Niemas repaired the car, but at the Quarters the problems came back, making that Desmond missed (as highest ranked among the eliminated racers) the move to the semis. Another victim of the Quarters was George Kimber, until then always among the best finishers. At Semi A three cars finished not only with the same number of laps, they also finished together in the same segment. It concerned Gabe Inäbnit (CH), Alexander Ortmann (D) and Michael Niemas (D).

Eventually the 8 finalists were: Paul Gawronski (USA), Fred Hood (USA), "Piki" van Rossem (B), Giovanni Montiglio (I) and Gabriel Inäbnit (CH) for the Gods, and the German trio Ralph Seif (D), Alexander Ortmann (D) and Michael Niemas (D) for the Half-Gods. Having achieved at the semis more laps than Hood, Montiglio and Gawronski, Josef Korec (CZ) was eliminated, just as Chris Radisich (NZ) who was also faster. During the five first segment Giovanni Montiglio was setting the pace. During the sixth segment he was passed on the lead by "Piki" van Rossem. However the motor of Piki's car was dying and in the seventh heat he was passed by the three Germans and by Gabe Inäbnit. Now Michael Niemas was setting the pace with one lap in hand over the two other Germans. As he had to finish on the slowest lane it was far from obvious that he should be the final winner. Ralph Seif and Alexander Ortmann were coming closer and closer, coming all three in the same lap after more than a half hour of racing. But Niemas survived and won the race ahead over Seif and Ortmann. During the last minute Gabe Inäbnit got so nervous that with a faster car he deslotted several times, so that "Piki", now struggling with a motor which was total up, could pass him for the fourth place.

SEMI-PROS: BJÖRN VAN CAMPENHOUT & METRIS WIN IT ALL
On Sunday the semi-pros and the amateurs had to run their three races, nl. the two rounds of the Franco Gianotti Trophy and the 124 Worlds for semi-pros. Here the German Slotringers, helped by the two Kuhns, were the great favourites. Despite great racing of Marc Kurella, Andre Linberg and Ramon Trimborn they were dominated in the three races by Björn van Campenhout (B) and Mike Stahl (USA) taking three times the first and the second place. At those races it became obvious that the Plafit SLP chassis is no longer the top chassis in model car racing. Indeed, the famous Metris Mk IV chassis which Björn received from Gabe Inäbnit, had a superior road holding. Björn won the two rounds of the Gianotti Trophy, just as the Trophy itself with Stahl each time as second. Of the Slotringers Marc Kurella was just a bit faster than Andre Linberg and Ramon Trimborn struggling for the title of rookie of the year. At the 124 Worlds for semi-pros those three Slotringers qualified for the main, having been missed for a couple of sections by Arttu Salomaa (SF). Other finalists were (of course) Björn and Stahl, with the three remaining places going to the surprisingly fast Quinten Vanspauwen (B), to Hubert Jacob (F) and to Kristof Huys (B). The last named could follow Björn and Stahl until halfway, but after a serious crash his car was too wounded to fight any longer for victory. Van Campenhout won easily letting Stahl six full laps behind. Trimborn & Lindberg were now faster than Kurella and struggled for the third place on the podium. During the very last minute Linberg deslotted and was passed by Trimborn. Both finished with an equal number of IOC-points: 119.5. But as Linberg realised during the season 12 top-10 places against 11 for Trimborn Andre Linberg is the 2009 rookie of the year. Never in the history of slot-racing a rookie won so many IOC points. The evening before the race the Slotringer received a visit of Nick de Wachter supporting them. [JPVR]

11th IMCA 132 Production Sprint Worlds - NSR MOSLER

Desmond Dekker (mid) was the surprising winner of the 132 Production Worlds with a car he received from ... his runner-up "Piki" (left). Here we see Piki in the shirt of European champion. Indeed, earlier "Piki" won the EuroNats. Third at the 132 Production Worlds was Chris Radisich from New Zeeland.

BEST IMCA WORLDS EVER WITH EXCELLENT FORMAT

Germany wins once more the Nations Cup - Concourse to Niemas - Mello Yello to Des Dekker

An image organisers can only dream about: those racers, all at the start of the 21st IMCA Worlds won together no less than 70 world championships. We see from left to right Jozef Miskolci (SK), Vlado Okali (SK), "Piki" van Rossem (B), Vladimir Horky (CZ), Michael Niemas (D), Josef Korec (CZ), Petr Krcil (CZ), Paul Gawronski (USA) and Brian Saunders (GB). Most famous wing car racers, scale racers and model car racers racing all together with equal winning chances.

Another shot, randomly taken, but again good for racers having won together 20 world championships. F.l.t.r. "Piki" van Rossem, Vlado Okali, Ralph Seif, Yves Welter jr, Brian Saunders and Gilles Dohogne. Although the Gods were beaten at the 124 Worlds by the Half-Gods (be it only for 1.5 points), all other rounds were convincingly won by the Gods, giving full evidence to one of the points I defend since a quarter century, nl. that wing car and scale car racers are better racers than model car racers. The combat Gods versus Half-Gods was won by 4 to 1 by the Gods.

Fastest racer at the Mello Yello was undoubtedly Björn Van Campenhout, but a wrong lane sticker on green, followed by two deslottings cost him 4 laps. So the struggle for victory went among Desmond Dekker, Kristof Huys and Gilles Dohogne. Of them Huys came less than half a lap short to win, Dohogne less than 2 laps. Desmond Dekker won the race. The Slotringer disappointed. Marcel Kuhn was a strong fifth.

The Ferraris F430 were no handout cars and were raced by semi-pros & amateurs.
The Concourse winning BMW M1 of Michael Niemas: absolutely outstanding! Second place at Concourse went to this F430 of Mark Huys.
Detail of the motor compartment of the Concourse winning BMW M1. Third place at Concourse was for this F430 built by Gabriel Inäbnit.

My very last worlds started with one minute of silence in memory of Jon Laster. All racers came at the start in purple t-shirts (Jon's favourite colour). The race with the 132 NSR Nincos was very enjoyable, and one of the best of the meeting. What a difference with last year! Giovanni Montiglio did a superb job in setting up the cars. There was some anomaly with this race: how to explain that the average of all laps contested by "Piki" was lower than that of Desmond Dekker who won the race? The explanation is quite simple: in Piki's run thee were in total 23 track calls, in Desmond's run only 8. Analyse of the computer sheets learns that at each track call an average of 3.3 seconds per call is lost. A difference of 15 (23 - 8) track calls corresponds with a loss of 50 seconds. In 50 seconds a well driven car can achieve 6 laps. At the finish Desmond had achieved 5 laps more than "Piki". With an even amount of track calls the final result could have been different. Lesson to learn: Next year the 132 Production Race should be preceded by Qualifications, so that the best racers are all in the same heat, not spread over several heats.
The entry field 10 of the 11 reigning world champions at the start was the best ever. Among the pros Paul Gawronski and Petr Krcil caused a stir: having never driven a model car in their life (and having very perhaps never SEEN a model car in their life) they were extremely competitive. (Especially Piki and Desmond were impressed by Krcil's way of driving.) The split between PROS and SEMI-PROS having both to do the same races, but with different cars (handout BMW M1s for the PROS, Ferraris F430 for the others) was an extremely good decision. All entrants agreed that Michael Niemas did a fabulous job, as all his BMWs handled exactly similar. So close racing was guaranteed. Look at the result of the 124 Worlds where three racers finished within a half lap, or at the results of Semi A where the three first finished in ... the same lap and the same segment! However there was a minus points: none of the used motors was broken in and after a couple of races several motors lost their punch: that was certainly the case with the cars of Maresca (already at the second warm-up race), of Desmond Dekker (124 quarters), of Giovanni Montiglio (last half of the main), of Marcel Oosterling (124 quarters), of Michael Niemas (last two runs of the main) and of "Piki" (last half of the main). At once those cars were no longer able to realise the same sharp lap times as noted at the warm-up races.
Lesson to learn: when motors are not properly broken in the dust of the coals on the collector can be more serious at one car than at another. So Michael Niemas will receive 30 new motors which must be broken in with Noviello's system (letting them turn at 4 volts in a glas with a mixture of water and oil). If the motors are more equal the system of the handout cars will be just a dream, because it's the lonely way to let wing car racers compete with equal weapons as scale racers and model car racers.
The races with the F430 were completely dominated by the Metris MkIV works car as prepared by Gabe Inäbnit. With that car Björn van Campenhout won all races, despite heroic defense by Mike Stahl and the Slotringers. The Metris was so superior to the Plafit SLP that it may be expected that next year most SEMI-PROS and AMATEURS will use that chassis under their Ferrari F40.
The 21 IMCA Worlds were my very last. Over 21 editions 445 different racers came on the start. I noted 1,005 entries with racers from 28 different countries. Complete results of the 21 IMCA 124 Worlds Sprint can be found here. Except for "Beuf" Pedersen all the best racers of the world entered at least one edition. Next year the 22nd IMCA Worlds Sprint and the 9th IMCA Worlds Endurance will be organised by Slotracing Merlijn, celebrating their 30th anniversary. In total 72 racers are invited: 30 PROS and 42 SEMI-PROS or AMATEURS. Invited racers are asked to confirm their entry by mail before the end of December. I thank the 445 racers who entered one of my 21 IMCA Worlds. Ciao. [JPVR]

Just as last year, Australia's Tim Tyler had bad luck. He missed the main for the 124 Worlds by finishing eleventh. He was also eleventh at the Benelux Cup and twelfth at the 132 Worlds. Among the geezers he finished fourth, being preceded by Fred E. Hood, Giovanni Montiglio and George Kimber.
After five attempts Fred Hood eventually had a descent car. With that car he reached the main final of the 124 Worlds. Hood (66), the oldest racer at the start, was also the winner of the Geezers Pro Championship. Good old George Kimber - celebrating his 61st anniversary on Saturday - proved he's not already done. At four of the five races he was faster than Brian Saunders. If he shows again next year, his wife threatened him ... to divorce. Poor George!

September 23, 2009 - Plafit racing has always been an important part of hard bodied model car racing. The famous Plafit chassis was launched in Japan in 1988 and arrived in Europe early the 1990s. Importers were Kurt Petri (D) and Criccrac (E). Until 2001 the Plafit chassis was nearly alone on the market. At IMCA it was the unique chassis being used in competition from 1994 to 2001. In the States Philippe de Lespinay launched at the end of the 20th century a complete new chassis, the TSRF, using - contrarily to the Plafit chassis hold together by several nuts and bolts - only one screw (a bit in the style of the Russkit chassis of the 1960s). Although the TSRF chassis could be raced with several hard plastic bodies (but not all!) it was more appropriated for competition on plastic tracks than for competition at wooden tracks. In 2001 Karl Janda (D) came on the market with a brand new Motor Modern (MoMo) chassis, fitting under any type of hard plastic body. Later followed the Schoeler chassis, the Metris chassis, the Slotvision chassis, the MSR-1 chassis, the MSC chassis, the M-Racing C1 chassis, and more recently the handicraft made chassis of Fola Osu and Ralph Seif, released at a limited number of copies.

It's a matter of a fact that the Plafit chassis is the mother of all model car racing. In 1999 the Plafit importers Petri and Basas started an own one make series with the DPM (Deutsche Plafit Meisterschaft) in Germany and the EC (Campeonato de Espaňa) in Spain. Apart from this two races a European Plafit Championship (EPC) was from 1999 to 2004 yearly organised over one apart meeting, mostly at Le Mans, prior to the 1/1 24 hours. Up from 2005 the EPC went over two meetings (the DPM and the EC) by adding the collected points by each team. In 2007 a third meeting was added after Keld Høfler (DK) bought the Belgian wooden 8-laner from Paul Schietekat and received the right to organise the Dansk Plafit Mesterkab (DKPM). Now only the two best results realised per team were considered. Last year the EC changed name into Plafit World Series [PWS].

Of all organised model car racing the Plafit Series is undoubtedly the most fair formula: the rule book is very strict and motors (Bison Mk3) and tyres (Scaleauto) are always handout. This year we noted 447 entries by 256 different racers at the three European Plafit meetings. A new record. It proves the greatness of European Plafit racing. Racers came from 14 different countries what seems to suggest how well-spread the entry was. However, if we analyse the entries per nation, we discover at once - next to the greatness of Plafit racing - the ... poverty of Plafit racing. Indeed 90.17 per cent of all entries came from Germany (133 racers or 50.38 per cent), Spain (72 racers or 27.27 per cent) and from Denmark (33 racers or 12.12 per cent). The remaining racers came from Switzerland (6 racers); Italy (5 racers); Austria, Belgium and Sweden (3 racers); France (2 racers); Japan, Nigeria, USA, Poland and Holland (1 racer). So something goes definitively wrong with the international spread of the racers. Countries as Holland and Belgium count each more than 150 model car racers, but only 1 and 2 of them found their way to European Plafit racing. Switzerland counts easily 100 model car racers but only 6 of them entered the Plafit races. Italy counts more than 1,000 1/32nd "plastic racers", but was except for 5 racers absent at European Plafit racing. And what of Anders Lattermann and Tjoborn Ljundqvist in Sweden? Are they still active? What about Egil Aksnes in Norway, about good old Thorkild Hjorth in Denmark? Are they still in the running?

THE EUREGIO EPNC PROJECT
Early July I received several mails of racers from the Euregio making plans to organise a fourth annual Plafit event, but now with a better equilibrium of the entrants. They were thinking on a formula with 3 teams per nation (9 racers per nation), with for Germany a second team with 3 cars and 9 racers. Among the invited nations they wrote me about Germany I (Plastikquäler I, A.C.R., Bad Boys), Germany II (Kraner Racing, NASCAR Racing, Plastikquäler II - but where is No Limits? where X-Rookies?), Spain (Afondo Slot Restart, Criccrac, Marina Alta), Denmark (Racefun.dk, Scuderia Minimale, HMC), Belgium (Les Anars, Sloefspeed, Speedlines), Holland (Racing for Holland I & II, Speed '74), France (Hubert Jacob Racing, Havet Racing, Dream Ch'team), Finland (Kaitserrari I & II, Salomaa Racing), Switzerland (R.I.C.H., Toblerone, Slotconnection), Sweden (Hjarup SRC, CB Racing, Ace of the Race), Norway (Badet I, Badet II, SRC Trondheim) and Austria (Grenzlandslot I & II, Pumpkin Racing).
They wish to call their race the EURO PLAFIT NATIONS CUP (EPNC), being completely independent (no links with IMCA, no links with OEPS, no links with SLP, no links with DSC, etc.) They are working on an own web site and asked me to mention the initiative on our web site. However, I prefer that they present their event themselves because I am not so familiar with the race teams they mentioned. I gave them the advice to co-operate with Yves Welter sr (B), with Bernd Huvendiek (D) and with Tamar Nelwan (NL). Tamar, however, seems not free. Perhaps they can contact Henk Visser (NL). During three months I heard nothing more on the EPNC until yesterday, when they saw the individual EPC ranking on the IMCA web. Now it seems that their project makes progress as they spoke about Eindhoven (NL) as potential race location and as they asked if they can rent the MTT track for the race. I appreciate their will to be independent, because that seems for me the correct way to go, certainly if they wish to have not only DPM-DKPM-PWS racers at the start, but as well SLP racer, DSC racers, IMCA racers and OEPS racers.
Concerning the format they think on a race in three one hour segments with one night segment. After each segment each national team can win the same points as applied at the EPC. After all three the segments points are added to make the ranking per nation. As motor they wish to use the Plafit Bison Mk3. As body they seem won for Tamiya's Ferrari F40 GT because that body seems to be lots stronger than the Porsche 911 GT being the top-entry in European Plafit Racing. They will create a web site in three languages (German, English and French - why not Spanish?).
They asked my opinion about it. I think it's the best way to organise a representative nations cup. However I don't believe that Finland - too close to the MoMo chassis - will enter and I put questions concerning Sweden and Austria. I think that a Germany III and Germany IV team are necessary for the success. Furthermore it will difficult for them to find a good date on the international calendar. I am also afraid that they have not enough experience in organising such high level competition. They'll need certainly help of Kurt Petri, the Basas Bros and Keld Høfler. As soon as their web site is on line I'll let you know. All by all it seems a good initiative, because the best way for 100 per cent fair racing remains Plafit racing. Here individual racing abilities are more important than technological skill. Indeed, the Plafit series remains the corner stone of all actual international model car racing. [JPVR]

PETER BICHSEL & PATRICK STUDER WIN WITH '70 FERRARI 512S

Ferrari makes it 3 wins to 2 for Porsche, but Porsche leads Ferrari with 223 pts vs 182 pts

September 1, 2009 - In a lustrum of time the SRC Northland 5-litre Summernight Race became one of the most enjoyable for international amateurs. The time is over that such PROS as Michael Niemas/Ralph Seif (winners of the first edition in 2005) could dominate te event. It's now a real race where amateurs can enjoy fully fun. Of the 62 entrants of this year's edition 60 were pure amateurs. There was only one PRO at the start (Dieter Jens, IOC #48) and one SEMI-PRO (Matthias Parke, IOC #129). I think that the 2009 edition was the best of the five, despite the fact that there was no longer an Alexander Ortmann, a Kai Kivekäs, a Peter Oberbillig, or a Günther Riehl at the start. This year's entry field was much more in equilibrium than that of the previous years and good amateurs - often faster than some well reputed PROS - can at least start with good chances to go to victory lane. As a direct consequence racing was much closer than at the previous editions with three cars finishing within less than two full laps. Victory went to the Ferrari 512S of Peter Bichsel (CH) and Patrick Studer (CH). Last year they finished as runners-up to the European Endurance Champion Kai Kivekäs (SF) who teamed with organiser Matthias Parke (D), but then the difference was eleven full laps. This year the gap between 1 and 2 was only 1.69 laps, between 2 and 3 only 0.10 laps!
There was a good international entry field with 11 amateurs from Denmark, 4 amateurs from Switzerland, 2 amateurs from Austria, 2 amateurs from Sweden and 1 amateur from Turkey. Except for the former winners Jürgen Stüdemann (2006) and Frank Hermes and Dieter Sommer (2007) the best amateurs of Germany were all present. In total we found 31 cars at the start (one less than last year, three more than in 2007, one more than in 2006 and nine more than in 2005).
Already at the qualifications Bichsler/Studer of the Swiss Toblerone Team and its Ferrari 512S were fastest, 8/1000nds of a second ahead over the Porsche 917LH of Parke/Krieger and 15/1000nds of a second ahead over the youngsters Christian Thilo-Zug (D) and Jakob Anderson (DK).
The race has since five years the same format with a day section and a night section. Per section each entrant has to race 5 x 4 minutes for each of the two racers per team. After one quarter of the race the Porsche 917LH of the Werksteam (Parke/Krieger) was leading the Swiss Toblerone Ferrari 512S with 0.35 lap and the other Porsche 917LH of Haithabu Racing Team (Jan Reimer/Lars Schäfer) by 0.64 lap. One of the favourites, the famous Dieter Jens, followed already at 5 laps. At half-race, after the complete day section the Toblerone Ferrari 512S had passed the Werksteam Porsche 917LH, but the difference between the two cars was only 0.14 of a lap. The sister Porsche 917LH of the Haithabu Racing Team was still third, being nearly three full laps down. Going into the night there was no more doubt that victory should go among one of those three cars.

At the first part of the night section the two Long Heck Porsches finished side by side with less than 5 cm between them. The Swiss Toblerone Ferrari 512S, however, had increased its advance during the first part of the night into 1.89 laps over the Werksteam Porsche 917LH. In fourth position we found the Ferrari 512M of Peter Hanel and Nils Schröder, but already 11 laps down. Meanwhile the Ferrari 512S of Gerd van de Wiel and Joachim Welsh could continuously improve its position: after the first day segment it was still ninth, after the two day segments sixth and after the first night segment it was already fifth, having now also passed the Porsche 917K of the youngsters Thilo-Zug & Anderson.
During the second night segment the two Porsches 917LH tried to attack the Toblerone Ferrari, out on the lead, and although they went faster than the Ferrari they failed to beat it. During that last night segment the Haithabu 917LH succeeded to pass the sister car of the Werksteam. At the finish the difference between the two was only one tenth of a lap. Other positions changed no longer. The Danish teams disappointed. The first of them finished not higher than tenth. The Swedish team, finishing 18th overall, having been long time in 15th position, disappointed too. The Austrian team did a bit better, finishing as 12th. It should be great if the winning Swiss team could enter next year the OEPS endurance series, where they can compete with several PRO teams. Chabnce is subsistent that they can finish high in the standings.
After five editions Ferrari won three times from Porsche (2006, 2008 and 2009) and lost twice from Porsche (2005, 2007). If we award top-10 finishers with res. 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point(s), it's however Porsche leading Ferrari. The Porsches collected over five years 223 points, the Ferraris 182 points.
At the 5L Summernight Race the Danes organised a so-called Nordisk Mesterskab 2009, having been won by Christian Høfler. However I cannot see why such championship should be representative for something. The best Nordic racer, Borge Haug was not there and with him nobody of the Norwegian racers. Moreover there was nobody from Finland and nobody from the Baltic States.
Although contested on a rather non-conventional track (a wooden 5-laner) it seems as if the 5L Rennen found this year their real vocation: a fine competition among amateurs from different countries. That seems the way to be followed for the future. In October 2009 the SRC Northland organises a nearly perfect model car race, with at the start 32 cars being 1/24th copies of cars having been seen at the start of the 1999 Le Mans 24 hours. The most stirring entrant at that race will be Afolabi Osu who won in 2007 the non-odfficial world championship for Amateurs. He certainly will start as the main favourite. The LM99 race could be the start for a long series, where non-German amateurs receive a unique opportunity to compete with the best German amateurs, racing as fast as some of the best PROS. [JPVR]

1ST TORONTO MASTERS, F430 SPRINT RACE  JULY 26-27 - TORONTO (CDN)  [LEVEL 2 IOC EVENT]

HAUG BEATS INÄBNIT AND HIS METRIS MkIV BY HALF A LAP

Disastrous tech control - Ingram wins W-U - Nick De Wachter defeated by technical woes

July 28, 2009 - One year ago the Toronto race was announced as the best model car race ever. It's difficult for me to stay objective in an event in which, initially I invested lots of energy. Then came the stupid body question, and what should have been the IMCA Toronto Worlds turned into a potential farce. It became the Mark Campbell Toronto Masters with hardly 30 starters instead of the scheduled 72. The event started with concourse for the F430 sprint cars. Here the winner was Kan Roestorf (AU), beating the 2008 Concourse World Champion Louise Valkenborg (B) and good old Frank Devuano (CDN). So, that seamed a good start. On Gabe's pics I find a noce Steve Ogilvie MTT track, however without coloured lanes but with numbered lanes. Against the wall an inventive banner, not speaking about a "World Championship" - which is an official patented IMCA monopoly - but of "World Endurance Championship - 2009 Toronto Premiere." Well found to avoid big juridical problems. Then follows the AMLS/GT concourse, where only nine cars are entered. Here Nick de Wachter (NL) deserves victory with his splendid #66 De Ferran Acura. Second place goes to Tim Tyler (AU), third to Jan Roestorf (AU). Nothing abnormal up to here. One finds no results on Campbell's wen site, but Tim Tyler and Gabe Inäbnit do a great job. Tim puts results on line on the Australian Auslot Forum and Gabe keeps everyone informed on Tamar's forum, adding hundreds of pics.
But at Sunday evening happens what Raymond van Campenhout always forecasted, nl. that technical control should be a disaster, as done by two scrutineers without the smallest experience with model cars and the IMCA rule book. If I understand correctly technical control was not finished on Sunday evening, as scheduled and continued on Monday. Indeed, lots of time were lost at the technical control where race director Andy Wasserman (USA) changed the rules completely at the very last minute. So he invented on line new rules stipulating 5 grams penalty for a too wide body, 1 or 2 grams for missing parts, and believe it or not: 30 grams for a shortened front lip. Eventually only ... one racer passed control: Franco Devuano (CDN). This fantasy was of such nature that Tim Tyler (AU), a lawyer by profession, and Chris Radisich (NZ) decided not to start as the rules were not applied correctly. But also other racers, among them Fola Osu (NIG), decided not to start as only 23 racers entered the warm-up race. Among them - never seen in international competition - only five PROS and two KIDS.  Missing to from the entry list published by Campbell are Tamar Nelwan (NL), Larry DiRubbo (USA), and Serge Tourikian (CDN).. Three other entrants, Francesco Seren (I), Enrico "Bomba" Baratella (I) and Alan Smith (USA) - never before seen in an international race - didn't enter, but that was anounced earlier on the entry list.

The warm-up race should have gone over four heats of 8 x 5 minutes, which is good for normally 310 to 320 laps. But on the results of the warm-up race I find only 56 laps for the winner. Does this correspond with 8 x 1 minute? I don't know as absolutely nobody mails me what's going on. Nevertheless it was a real pleasure for me that the warm-up was won by Chuck Ingram (CDN), in 1986 winner of the real last Pinky Point round. Thanks to Chuck the 1/1 Ferrari 308 GTB (first prize, yes) went to Willy Heerwegh and not to Sergio Maresca. Other places on the W-U podium went to Gabriel Inäbnit (CH) and Terry Dalton (CDN). Bad luck for Marcel Oosterling whose car was put in the wrong lane and hit at full speed by another car. Astonishing: Tim Tyler, Chris Radisich and Fola Osu didn't start and top favourite Nick de Wachter finished only as 13th on 23 entrants.
Then, with a serious delay on the race schedule, qualifications start for what should have been the 22nd IMCA Model Car Sprint World Championship. Such poor spectacle was never seen earlier in international model car racing as the entry field is reduced to a poor 23 racers, not from 12 nations as proudly announced by Campbell, but from 8 nations. Again with only five PROS and two KIDS. Main surprise is that Nick de Wachter (NL), who worked during months so hard to prepare his cars, clocked only the sixth best time (7"750). Track was very slippery and all times were a lot under the times realised last year by the F430s. Then, at free practice, Philipp Kremer realised 7"306 at free practice against 7"413 for De Wachter (with a total illegal car as he avoided later himself). In the race best time went last year to Christian Kremer in 7"098. At the Toronto Masters Gabe Inäbnit on a Metris MkIV works chassis qualifies as fastest in 7"607, ahead over "Javi" Checa Lozano (E), Børge "Mustang" Haug (N), Glenn Wennerberg (N) and Mike Stahl (USA). The Aussies disappoint: Roestorf 8th and Wakelin 14th.
At the Quarter finals Gabe Inäbnit (CH) is again the fastest with with 298.83 laps and a fastest lap in 7"343. Haug (N) is second, Nick (NL) third, "Javi" Checa fourth and Mike Stahl (USA) a fine fifth. Remaining top-8 places go to Wennerberg (N), Javier Checa (E) and Simon Wakelin (AU). First Canadian is Mark Campbell as ninth. Roestorf (AU) disappoints again and is only 14th. Seven racers are eliminated. Of the nine Canadians at the start only four survive the Quarters (Campbell, Ingram, and Victor Czernowy). Of the four Americans only Stahl and Colin Schmitt survive. Despite a ruined car Marcel Oosterling (NL) qualifies for the Semis, just as does Louise Valkenborgh (B). So we go to the Semis with the two Aussies, two Dutchman, two Spaniards, two Norwegians, one Belgian, one Swiss, four Canadians and two Americans. [JPVR]

SEMI FINALS: DISASTER FOR NICK DE WACHTER
I believe that, if there was one racer who deserved to win, it was Holland's Nick de Wachter. On his diary we could read all the hard work he did on the car. Although I maintain my position that the chassis was illegal it must have been a fast car. In the Semis however the car was beyond repairs after only 161 laps (80 more than Louise Valkenborgh who was eliminated too on technical woes). Most unlucky man at the Semis was Mike Stahl who missed the move from Franco Devuano by less than a fifth on a lap.  The eliminations of Oosterling (car crashed on W-U race),  and Victor Cerwony could be expected, whilst Roesdorf and Roger Schmitt missed speed to make the move. Winner of the Semis was not Gabe Inäbnit, but "Javi" Checa Lozano. So we went to the main with 2 racers out of nine for Canada, with the two racers from Spain, with the two racers from Norway and with one Aussie and one racer from Switzerland. Among them only four PROS.

MAIN FINAL: BØRGE HAUG FROM START TO FINISH
Of the finalists six entered the 2008 Sprint Worlds with an F430. Best of them was Inäbnit with an equivalent of 297.58 laps (11th; 238.07 x 5/4) ahead of Haug with an equivalent of 292.03 laps (16th; 175.22 x 5/3), "Javi" Checa Lozano with an equivalent of 285.33 laps (22nd; 171.20 x 5/3), Javier Checa with an equivalent of 275.05 laps (33rd; 165.03 x 5/3), Wennerberg who was eliminated after 122 laps with technical problems and Mark Cambell who failed to qualify among the top-36. So one could expect an order as 1. Inäbnit, 2. Haug, 3. "Javi" Checa, 4. Javier Checa, 5. Wennerberg and 6. Campbell, with the two new comers (Wakelin and Devuano) on the remaining places. Except for Mark Campbell who was beaten by Franco Devuano for the first place among the Canadians - they finished one but last and last of the main - the five first places went to entrants of the 2008 Worlds. Børge Haug deserved victory as he was leading from start to finish. Congratulations, Børge! Nevertheless let's be attent. Compared to the speed reached last year by the Germans, the Sprint Masters were of a much lower quality. Last year the top 8 racers all achieved more than 302 laps (with 313.20 for Christian Schnitzler). Now the winner came no further than 296 laps, despite a smoother and faster Carousel. Is it then subjective on behalf of me that I conclude that the quality of the entry field was not worthy an international top event? And can when speak of such event with only five PROS at the start?

The new MTT Track in Toronto under an excellent flat lamp. Although the Carousel is smoother than on traditional MTTs, no top times were realised at the qualifications, whilst total laps after 40 minutes were seriously lower than at the F430 Sprint Race at the 2008 Worlds. Too many top racers were absent.

After the first segment of the main we find five cars on the lead lap, with Wennerberg, "Javi" (lane 1) and Campbell limping two laps behind. After two segments there are still three leaders: Haug, Devuano and Wakelin. After his run on lane 1 Inäbnit is three laps down. In the third segment Haug takes at least three laps on the whole field. Favourite Inäbnit follows already at six laps. That becomes seven at half race. Then Gabe starts his come-back: it is five laps after five segments, three after six segments. Two with a last segment to go. As Haug has to start on the slow lane 1 and Gabe on the faster lane 4, nobody seems to give a dime for Borge's winning chances. But he's a fighter, and a good racer, the lonely one improving his lap total of 2008. Sure, Inäbnit comes closer and closer, comes even in the same lap as the man from Norway. But Gabe will come no closer than half a lap down and Haug is the winner, Inäbnit his runner-up. I hope to see both at the X-Mas 22nd IMCA Worlds, especially to note their progress. With 20 extra points Haug enters the top-100 of the super PROS, so that he's eligible to drive one of the handout Niemas BMWs.
Until the end of the fifth segment "Javi", having been second at mid-race drops into third position, two laps down to Inäbnit and with two laps in hand over Wennerberg. On lane 7 Glenn realises a superb 39 laps and passes "Javi". During the three  last segments Javi's car seems dead and for the fourth place he's even passed by his dad.
Two remarks. First is there someone who can imagine what should have happened should there have been 32 entrants as announced? Now the Consis (4 heats of 40 minutes) could be dropped, but even then we finished at 3am. And what should the disaster have been with 72 entrants as initially planned? Campbell may be very thankful thazt there were only 23 starters, otherwise the rac should have been finished around seven in the morning. Second: it seems that the endurance race of today and tomorrow will not go after IOC points. Minimum requirement is 14 cars with 3 drivers only. But now that there are hardly 30 entrants (and probably less) the minimum requirement for cars wirh only two drivers cannot be met. How to make 21 cars with 2 drivers (equivalent to 14 cars with 3 drivers) if there can be only 30 entrants with never more than one car per driver. That implies that Chris Radisich and Tim Tyler will win no IOC points in Toronto (except if they enter the level 3 PlaFit race with 10 points for the winner. But are Plafit cars their thing? Is that no more the speciality of Roestorf and and Wakelin? [On the left pic the 8 finalists of the sprint race. Pics courtesy to Gabe.) [JPVR]

1ST TORONTO MASTERS, 8 HOURS ENDURANCE RACING  & CANADIAN GP - JULY 27-28 - TORONTO (CDN)  [IOC EVENT LEVEL 3]

ONLY ONE WORD: WORTHLESS!

Aussies dominate enduro in a  meeting where all racers were fooled by empty promises

Having just read the article detailing the full results it appears the so called "Worlds" were hardly a complete success with competitor numbers and nations represented being way down on expectation. Last minute technical rule changes effectively ruled out several of the bigger names making the results even more questionable as to a "World" title event. I just don't know how the 1/24th guys can travel across the world to race cars going to all that expense and time just to have some technical rules placed upon them at the very last moment to effectively spoil the occasion. No, this are not my words, that is what I read on the Australian forum. As an old organiser of international races, to promote wing car racing as well as scale racing and model car racing, my heart is bleeding when I see the whole mess in Toronto. Some twenty guys had to go deep in their pockets to make the trip. Organiser Mark Campbell promised them golden mountains. When it became clear that this event could NEVER have the status of a world championship, Campbell continued to present his miserable event as such, despite the fact that he had even not one German racer at the start and that except for Nick de Wachter (NL), Tim Tyler (AU), Chris Radisich (NZ), Gabe Inäbnit (CH) and the raising star Borge Haug (N) the real top of model car racing stayed away. I mean "Piki" (B), Michael Niemas (D), Philipp Kremer (D), Ralph Seif (D) and so many others. If one organises a top meeting one doesn't change the rules at the last minute, one invites a competent race direction knowing all the finesses of model car racing, and above all one respects the proposed race schedule. Instead of paying a competent model car race director, perhaps not well known overseas, Campbell went for a big name: Andy Wasserman, the guy who directs all wing car world champions, the Swedish Masters, the ISRA Worlds, etc. But Wasserman knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about model cars, he even cannot tell you which parts are commercialised and which not. Already in January Raymond van Campenhout sent several mails to Campbell to go after a competent race director, but Campbell went his own megalomaniac way. Bigger was not big enough for him. He promised an own press delegate (Mick Brown), a splendid BBQ, the most sunny of all Canadian summers and even that the world wide economic recession should be stopped before the start of his race. But now we are so happy that Gabe and Tim keep us informed, because on Campbell's forum there is even no link to the results. On the most recent version of the race schedule the BBQ has been replaced by "a few cold ones in the pub", where, I guess, the racers have to pay their beer themselves. And instead of the promised Canadian summer where the sun is always shining racers discovered upon arrival the same rain as on their homeland. When I wrote Campbell that, due to the sharp economic recession, we had to do something to pay the plane tickets of the best racers, he pretended that this was the old IMCA and that he expected that the recession should be over by the summer. I paid the entry fee for ten good racers: "Piki", Youri, André Linberg, Ramon Trimborn, Marc Kurella, Ralph Seif, Alexander Ortmann, Christian Schnitzler, Kristof Huys, Björn van Campenhout and myself. For seven of them I paid a plane ticket at my travelling office in Vilvoorde and I paid 2000 euros to Flavio, the driving force behind the youngsters Linberg, Trimborn and Kurella. I paid it with my own money. And then came the stupid body question, where I insisted that the illegal Porsche bodies of the RS Spider and the 997 GT3-RSR should be replaced by legal bodies, because I wished to avoid being sued again for admitting illegal bodies at the start of an IMCA event. Campbell, however, refused. He had plans to conquer both Americas with ALMS model cars, where apart from the Audis R10 the Porsches where so important.

And where we stand now? Instead of 16 LMP prototypes there are only 6, even not one single Audi, having dominated the ALMS series during years. Of the 15 Canadians he promised only nine effectively showed. Among them none of the tree Canadian top racers (Ernie Mosetti, Greg Mills and Brad Friesner). He can bring even not 8 simple GT cars at the start. When I looked yesterday at the race schedule I saw three 8 x 5' races for the Canadian Grand Prix, starting the first one at 9am. Now, in the mid of the night, I discover that there has been only one with a poor 13 cars at the start. Can someone tell me which was the pleasure for Tim Tyler/Chris Radisich having won that race, or for Jan Roestorf/Simon Wakelin having finished as runner-up? They deserved a vast competitive entry field, not a poor 13 cars. In Europe, at the simple SLP series, there are at least three or four times more cars and more than a dozen IOC top-100 racers. In Toronto there were exactly four (five now Haug moved into the top-100 after his nice victory of yesterday).
Everybody knows that Nick de Wachter is not my friend. But how you think he feels after such debacle? During months he prepared on a very professional way his cars. He has the spirit of the born winner. He always wishes to win. His adrenaline comes from the other competitors he wishes to beat. Look how good he was at the DPM. And despite the fact that he was beaten - he finished second with Laufenberg - he was proud about that result. The trophy he won received the best place in his house. But Nick de Wachter without strong opponents is no longer the same Nick de Wachter. In Herentals at the EEC 2009 I saw him on lane 7 struggling during 15 full minutes with Piki on lane 8. And although they were both on the outer lanes the fight was so intensive that they lapped the whole field. I saw him at Alsdorf where, during the last 15 minutes, he was closing up with the car of Sven Manti, driving in a superb style, really as the champion he is (not as the cheater he also is). He missed the title of European champion for ... three small segments after some 24 hours of racing (over the five rounds). But where are his direct opponents in Toronto? After Tim Tyler and Chris Radisich decided not to start in the sprint race, his two most gifted opponents were away. He had only Gabe to fight with. But to compete with Gabe he has not to go to Toronto, that he can do in Amsterdam or at Alsdorf. Campbell offered Nick an empty box and tried to convince him that in the box there was a real world championship. Poor Nick, he deserved so much better for all the hard work he did during the last months.
I'll not continue to stay awake another night to follow the long race. You can read the results on Tamar's web site and on The Australian slotcar forum. And this morning I saw that here too things were changed. It's no longer three sections of 8 x 30' but 8 x 20'. Who knows that tomorrow it will be 8 x 2', or 8 x 1' as was done with the warm-up race. So let's forget the worthless Toronto farce and look to the future. Although there is no budget for, I offer Tim Tyler and Chris Radisich - the most direct victims of the Campbell vaudeville - a free plane ticket for the (very reduced) X-Mas Worlds at the end of the year. And if Nick de Wachter, Borge Haug and Glenn Wennerberg are interested, then they are fully welcome.
Still one latest new from Europe. Andreas Laufenberg offered Helmut Mülln, the owner of the Spa track ... 2,500 euro to buy is. That's only one tenth of what it cost. Mülln refused the offer and decided to move the track NOT to Mönchengladbach, as initially was planned, but to Bettburg. Bettburg is at less than 40 kilometers from Alsdorf. For racers coming from the Euregio that's perhaps good news. At Bettburg the Spa track comes in an apart room, without music and noise from the bowling. That seems to be a better situation for the racers. [JPVR]

1ST TORONTO MASTERS, BRM 1/24TH PRODUCTION RACE  JULY 30 - TORONTO (CDN)  [IOC EVENT LEVEL 2]

CHRIS RADISICH BEATS TIM TYLER AND NICK DE WACHTER

driver

nat laps IOC

Driving 24 nearly perfectly equal handout cars, the all-rounders Chris Radisich (NZ) and Tim Tyler (AU) proved that they are the best gifted drivers of the lot. Should they have entered the Sprint Race at the Masters, they probably should have token the two first places. Chris Radisich is a regular entrant at the IMCA Worlds since 1988 in Chicago. He reaches regularly the main final. It was already his second IOC victory at the Masters. He's the perfect example of what can be reached by persistence. During years he was dominated in his own country by Dave Gick (twice ISRA world champion). But after the Masters, where he won 44 IOC points, Radisich is already 41st on the IOC-list, heading ... his country mate Dave Gick. For me he's more than "Piki" and the Germans the man to beat at the 21st X-Mas IMCA Worlds. Driving handout cars he's always a terrible front runner. All-rounder Tim Tyler, who won 35 new IOC points at the Masters is now #52 on the IOC-list, being the best ranked Aussie and having passed Australia's legendary racer Wayne Bramble. Best Canadian was again Franco Devou0no, now finishing as eighth. Homesickness, far away from his all-German friends, prevented 3/4 German Nick de Wachter (NL) to go really after victory. He finbished third. [JPVR]

2ND PANAM PLAFIT NATS  - JULY 30, 2009 - TORONTO (CDN)  [IOC EVENT LEVEL 3]

GABE INÄBNIT & MARCEL OOSTERLING BEAT NDW/STAHL

CHRIS RADISICH VICTOR LAUDORUM, AHEAD OVER GABE INÄBNIT, "JAVI" CHECA JR & TIM TYLER

Compared to the European editions of the PlaFit Championship, the Panam Edition was even not a weak copy of it. Last year there were still ... twelve cars. This year organiser Campbell - dreaming of a PlaFit World Championship - needed several back benchers to come to ten poor cars on the grid. Of those cars only six were competitive. Fortunately our Norwegian friends Haug/Wennerberg wished victory as much as Racing for Holland (Inäbnit/Oosterling). The fight among their cars was close until the very end. De Wachter/Stahl lost 17 laps during the first section too much to play any role in the struggle for victory lane. During the second segment they were the fastest pairing on the track, but the difference was to wide to bridge the gap. Gabe and Morcel won the race, one lap ahead over the Borge Mustang team.
With such a small entrance none of the races at the Masters deserved to go after IOC points. But one cannot let fly over racers if absolutely nothing can be won, even not honour. So we attributed IOC points to all races - except for the 8 x 1' curtain raiser. Victor laudorum is Chris Radisich with 44 won IOC points, ahead over Gabe Inäbnit, "Javi" Checa jr, Tim Tyler and Nick de Wachter. Of the 28 entrants only 15 were at there place at an event intended to be a ... World Championship and able to make the top-5 of a race. The others are club racers who are probably frustrated after their unequal battle. That was the worst publicity for model car racing I ever saw. [JPVR]

11TH DEUTSCHE PLAFIT MEISTERSCHAFT (DPM) MAY 21-23, 2009 - DIETZENBACH (D)  [IOC LEVEL 1]

CHR.SCHNITZLER/T.NÖTZEL/NOCKEMANN WIN!

De Wachter/Bolz/Laufenberg 2nd, Seif/Ortmann/Caroline Schnitzler 3rd

May 23, 2009 - For the 11th edition of the DPM no less than 168 racers showed. Among them 127 from Germany, 12 from Denmark, 9 from Spain (despite the strong crisis in Spain where unemployment is up to 25 %), 6 from Italy (a performance!), 5 from Austria, 3 from Holland, 2 from France, one from Poland, one from Japan, one from Switzerland and one from Nigeria. Nearly all the best German racers are in place except for two PROS: Dieter Jens (IOC: 43) and Thomas Spicker (IOC: 60). Among the German SEMI-PROS ten are absent: Matthias Parke (122), organiser Kurt Petri (126), Ralph Klose (134), Matthias Eichwald (196), Jan Gürtzgen (234), Patrick Meister (256), Jürgen Stüdemann (273), Uwe Steingraber (284), Dieter Hartmann (313) and Markus Hahnel (321). The German level is high with 8 PROS (Michael Niemas, Philipp Kremer, Ralph Seif, Christof Kremer, world champion Christian Schnitzler, Alexander Ortmann, Andreas Laufenberg, and Caroline Schnitzler). There are also 15 German SEMI-PROS at the start. The 104 other Germans have all the status of AMATEUR. This year's edition is thus very representative as a German championship, despite the fact that once more there are no racers from North-Germany and no racers from East-Germany, Berlin included.
The race is also called the second round of the European Plafit Championship - the first round went in Denmark - but as a European championship it's absolutely not representative. There are only two non-German PROS with Nick de Wachter (NL, IOC 4) and Fola Osu 'NIG, IOC 99). Too many excellent European PROS are missing at the start, among them: Piki van Rossem (B, IOC 3), Youri van Rossem (B, IOC 22), Giovanni Montiglio (I, IOC 23), Tamar Nelwan (NL, IOC 38), Kai Kivekäs (SF, IOC 40), Geert Mertens (B, IOC 42), Gabriel Inäbnit (CH, IOC 52), Dani Gonzales (E, IOC 55), Yves Welter jr (B, IOC 64), Jozef Miskolci (SVK, IOC 76), Georges Baikry (B, IOC 85), Daniele Malangone (I, IOC 88), Marcel Oosterling (NL, IOC 90), Francesc Reyes (E, IOC 91), Hugo Dekker (NL, IOC 92), Dennis Vogel (NL, IOC 98), Ladislav Szalai (SVK, IOC 103) and Gilles Dohogne (B, IOC 106). With only two of the twenty non-German European PROS at the start it's a little bit exaggerated to speak about a round of a European Championship.
So let's evaluate the DPM at its true value: it's undoubtedly the best race in Germany, but the non-German racers at the start are except for Jose Javier Checa (E), Bernat Basas (E), Nobuhisa Kudou (J), and Carlos Checa (E) not representative for the rest of Europe. Of the 56 teams with 3 racers having subscribed one didn't show and was replaced by a substitute's team - Kuppelwächter. After more than a full day of free practice - a real progress compared with the former years - qualifying started on Friday afternoon.

At midnight 17 teams had still to qualify (among them the 10 best teams). With 39 teams having already qualified Mike Hampel (D)/Pierre Stern (D)/Joachim Welsch (D) of the Jäger Team realised the best time in 7"357, that is 0"243 faster than last year's pole (7"600) realised by the Bad Boys. Provisionally second are the vice European champions in Endurance Racing (EEC 2009): Andre Linberg and Ramon Trimberg, now without Nick de Wachter as team mate, as De Wachter entered the Kraner Racing Team of Andreas Laufenberg. Team mate of Linberg/Trimborn is another Flavio Boy, Marc Kurella, at the EEC 2009 still the team mate of Fola Osu. Fola himself has at the DPM another famous Flavio Boy as team mate, Sven Manti, who at Alsdorf helped Ralph Seif after splendid racing to win the EEC 2009.Fola/Manti/Ries realised provisionally the third best time. Surprises came from the BE-NE Racing team entered via Rudi Munten and from Italy's Engage Models Racing, realising res. the fourth and the fifth place.
For dr. Checa & Sons the qualifications were a disaster. We don't know what happe-ned but their 8"062 is absolutely not representative for their driving talents. Deception too for the Bartelmes Bros, having realised only the 23rd time on 39. Another victim of the Qualifications is the former DPM winner, dr. Günther who with his X-Rookies came no further than 27th. The net progress of the Danish racers, already observed in Oslo and at Alsdorf in the EEC 2009, is confirmed by Iversen/Olsen/Rigtorp, realising the 13th place on 39. Also another Danish team, Racefun of Høfler/Høfler/Jacobson proved the Danish progress by finishing 20th. Terribly missing are Haug/Wennerberg and Bråten/R.K. Andersen. Norway has no racers at the start. Missing too are Hanson/Sander  & Hasager/Castella.
Shortly after mid-night the big guns came in action. Thirty minutes were enough to see the Jäger Team dropping from first into ... eleventh position. European Endurance Champion Ralph Seif of A.C.R. realised the pole in 7"139 (a new record), letting world champion Christian Schnitzler 41/1000nd of a second behind. Third place went to the team of Nick de Wachter. Of the Dutchman we know that he came to win and to take revenge for the European Championship that he lost at Alsdorf for ... four small sections. NDW is thus a very serious candidate to win this year's DPM. Former junior world champion Bernat Basas and his Criccrac Team realised the fourth best time, ahead over the Plastikquäler 2 Team of Jan Uhlig & Co. The Bad Boys could qualify for the main heat, but only as seventh and headed by No Limits of Kevin Krollmann & Co. KIK Racing caused a stir by realising the eight place for the top heat, whilst the Dr Slot Youngsters (fifth in 2007 and in 2008) missed the main heat, just as Manfred & Oliver Stork. Japan's Nobuhisa Kudou, winner of the Toronto Plafit Nats, qualified for the second best heat. [JPVR]

ABOVE: The traditional DPM track, here pictured by Fola Osu.
BELOW: The 168 entrants behind the track, again pictured by Fola Osu. In the race Fola himself was very fast, following the ACR Flavio Boys (with a fastest lap in è"313), but the third team member lost no less than 19 laps in the three last stints.

THE RACE
HEAT G -
The Marina Alta team of dr. Javier Checa & Sons has to start from the pits as, at the Qualifications, they suffered from a broken pinion. Repairs last so long that they count no longer for the OA standings. Team Franken 1 is pulling away and will win the heat in 714 laps, seven more than the Italian ADF Team. It are the two lonely teams achieving more than 700 laps. Last year the OA winners realised 749.41 laps, so we finish far beneath this guideline.
HEAT F - The glorious X-Rookies of dr. Günther Riehl dominate with 726.12 laps, winning the heat with an advance of more than eleven laps over Wit(s)ch Power having realised one lap more than the winners of the previous heat. Scuderia Minimale from Denmark and France's Paul Hamo with his Dream Cht'Team both disappoint as they fail to reach 700 laps.
HEAT E - Here the Swiss No Respect team of Michi Hirt give full evidence that they don't respect the old glories. With 730.26 laps they do not only better than the double ex-winner Günther Riehl, but even of the famous Bartelmes Bros coming three laps short. Christian Høfler & Cie confirm the progress of Danish model car racing, finishing with their Race Fun team as third from the heat.
HEAT D - Nezih Durukanli, well known from the NASCAR races at Köln and his Piccomat Team try to improve the 730 laps of the Swiss No Respect Team, but with 729.05 laps they come one lap short to go out at the provisional lead. MSK Slotracing is second of the heat, however, already at twelve laps. With still three heats to go the Swiss are already certain to finish at least among the top-25 OA.
HEAT C
- Halfway this heat, at once, the Manitoba answered no longer: the internet connection is broken; the two cameras as the race ticker function no longer. When the camera connection is repaired we see than Slot Mittelrhein is leading and that Carsten Starke of Leo Chili Racing lost his second place to Kraner Racing 2. The Live Ticker is always death. During the last segment, after 653 laps, Kraner Racing 2  joins Mittelrhein, coming in the lead lap. After 668 laps both teams are still in the same lap. During the last stages Hausmann/Ulli Nötzel/Schemmel blow Mittelrhein away, realising 745.11 laps. The Austrian Team Grenzland Slot is fourth behind Leo Chili Racing.
HEAT B
- Here we see a double confrontation. Among the youngsters Tobias Munchberger fights the two first heats against Andre Linberg. The other fight goes during the two first heats between Mirko Weber and Sven Manti. After the first two heats the Dr Slot Juniors have four laps in hand over Flavio's A.C.R. Junior Team, whilst NASCAR Racing leads the race and SG Stern limps already seven laps back. During the third segment Fola Osu starts for three segments with the SG Stern car. Maximilian Hollenberger takes over from Mïunchberger for Dr Slot Juniors. Andre Linberg and Mirko Weber do a a third consecutive stint. After 3 segments Mirko Weber (NASCAR) leads Maximilian Hollenberger (Dr Slot Suniors)by three laps. Andre Linberg (ACR Juniors of Flavio) succeeds to reduce his arrears on Dr. Slot Juniors to one single lap. Fola has been passed by Peco and Jäger and is now two laps behind the fourth place. For the fourth segment Manfred Stork replaces Weber, Ramon Trimborn Linberg. During the two following segments Stork maintains the lead but Trimborn takes two laps over Hollenberger. Fola passes Peco and is now fifth. During the following segment Mark Kurella of ACR Juniors reduces his arrears on Olivier Stork of Nascar by one lap: he's now three laps behind the leader. Robert Ries (SG Stern) hangs always one lap behind the Jäger Team car on rank four. Whilst Fola brought the SG Stern in the same lap as the Jäger, Ries will loose more than twelve laps towards the end, being even passed by Nobuhisa Kudou for the fifth place. Eventually the Flovio boys finish two laps down to the NASCAR Team, having achieved 749 laps. The Dr Slot Juniors are third at four laps, whilst Kudou of Peco has passed SG Stern

HEAT A - Nick de Wachter takes immediately the lead, followed by Thomas Nötzel and Alexander Ortmann. At the end of the first segment they are the lonely three on the lead lap. Criccrac looses three laps to clean the braids. Niemas is in serious troubles on lane 8 and follows after two segments as last on 8 laps. Ortmann has passed De Wachter. Still three cars in the same lap, followed at five laps by the rest of the field. Niemas always last. During the third segment De Wachter looses one lap on Ortmann and on Nötzel. The others foolow already at six laps or more. After three segments, NDW, who already did the slow lane 7, gives the car in hands of Stephan Bolz, only three laps behind Ortmann and Nötzel. Ralph Seif takes over from Ortmann, Sebastian Nockemann from Nötzel. With Seif on lane 7 Nockemann can take a full lap on A.C.R.  Peter Oberbillig takes the No Limits car over in fourth position and at seven laps from Kevin Krollmann who did the three first stints. At mid-race Nockemann has four laps over Seif, who is too slow on lane 8. Meanwhile Bolz did it fantastic on lane 8 and is only two laps behind A.C.R., six behind the leader. Oberbillig follows now at two laps from Bolz. With 386 laps halfway we are underway for some 770 laps, a serious new record. The Bad Boys are always last, now already at ... 16 laps. In the fifth segment Seif, now on lane 8, looses again two laps from Nockemann on lane 7. Bolz comes back on Seif. Difference one lap! Seif is now passed by Bolz, and even by Oberbillig. Nockemann has five laps over the NDW car. They still have good winning chances as Plastikquäler has still to go to the slowest laps. With three last segments to go A.R.C., fourth at 8 laps is no longer a candidate winner. Bolz follows at five laps from the leaders where world champion Christian Schnitzler takes over from Nockemann, whilst Caroline Schnitzler takes over from a disappointing Seif. Philipp Kremer cannot prevent that the gap with place seven increases. Bad day for the Bad Boys. A brilliant Stephan Bolz brings after three consecutive stints the NDW car on three laps from the lead. Andreas Laufenberg will do the two last stints. No Limits is fourth, having been passed by Caoline. She is third, nine laps down to the Plastikquäler leaders. Laufenberg second at two laps with one segment to go! No Limits passes A.C.R. nine laps down to the leader. Last segment: victory goes between Christian Schnitzler for Plastikquäler and Andreas Laufenberg for Kraner Racing. Ralph Seif takes over from Caroline for the last stint. Laufenberg at only ONE lap from victory after 669 laps!!! Bad Boys at one lap from Criccrac for place 7. 710 laps: Christian Schnitzler outstanding. He has again three laps over Laufenberg. Seif realises a fastest lap in 7"291 and is now third at 8 laps. Schnitzler gives Laufenberg not the smallest chance to win. Eventually Christian Schnitzler/Sebastian Nockemann/Thomas Nötzel win, four laps ahead over Nick de Wachter/Uwe Bolz/Andreas Laufenberg and Seif/Ortmann/ Carlone Schnitzler. The Flavio Boys finish in the top ten! [JPVR]

Majority of the bodies was again the Porsche 911 GT1. Of the non-Porsches the fastest lap in the race was realised by Fola Osu (7"313) with a Honda NSX, which was even faster than at the Qualifications.

4TH EEC/2ND CITATION CUP - MAY 2-3, 2009 - ALSDORF (D) - ROUND #5  [IOC LEVEL 3]

RALPH SEIF 2009 EUROPEAN CHAMPION

Niemas/Kremer win last round - S. Kuhn/M. Kuhn win Citation Cup

The 2009 EEC ended as one of the most thrilling stories in history of slot-racing. At the fifth and last round at Alsdorf (D) the race ended with a double suspense: struggling for the first place of the last round were Michael Niemas/Philipp Kremer (Audi R10 TDI) and Fola Osu/Marc Kurella (Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP), just as it was at the ALMS 10 hour race in real autosport. Starting the last segment the Peugeot was ten laps behind the Audi, but Fola could close the gap, unlapping himself no less than ten times. At the real last minute Fola came in the lead lap. It seemed as he should pass easily the Audi, out on the lead. But then, unfortunately Fola deslotted and the gap was again three quarters of a lap. There was not enough time to undo that arrears and the superb Peugeot died less than a full lap behind the Audi.
Behind the two leaders, struggling for the third and fourth place we found the car of Ralph Seif/Sven Manti and the Acura of Nick de Wachter and his Flavio co-drivers. Manti replaced "Piki" van Rossem as team mate after "Piki" decided not to show for the ultimate round. Starting the last segment the NDW Acura guys had to undo nine laps. As Sven Manti was driving on the slowest lane the Acura came closer and closer. If the NDW boys could pass Manti they won the championship. Should Manti succeed to maintain his third place, then his team mate Ralph Seif should be the EEC 2009 winner. In a thrilling final Andre Linberg - having had earlier problems with Flavio for his behaviour - succeeded to take back six laps on Manti's car. Then Nick de Wachter decided to take over for the real last ten minutes. Everybody expected that Ralph Seif should do the same with Manti's car, but Ralph didn't. He stood next to Manti, having full confidence that the young German could maintain his third place. Nick de Wachter drove in superb style the last ten minutes, proving once more that he's a hell of a driver (needing just as Sergio Maresca no tricks to win). With two minutes to go Nick came in the same lap of Manti closing now extremely fast. I saw Ralph Seif transpiring and extremely nervous, especially when Nick came only one straight behind. Eventually the black Acura finished only four small segments behind the car of Sven Manti, loosing the championship. Manti is another racer of the Flavio school: what good racers Flavio formed! So Ralph Seif won the EEC 2009 with 76 points against  75 for NDW, Andre Linberg and Ramon Trimborn with 75 points.
Third place went to "Piki" van Rossem who won the three first rounds: 64 points. Fourth is Michael Niemas with 62 points, fifth Philipp Kremer with 50 points, and sixth Christian Schnitzler/Alexander Ortmann - who didn't show at Alsdorf, with 39 points. That means that in the top-6 of the final ranking we find, apart from Trimborn and Linberg, nothing but former or actual world champions. In seventh position we find Gabriel Inabnit/Gaby Fisher/Michi Hirt with 36 points. They finished fifth at the last round. The Swiss team is the revelation of the EEC 2009. On rank eight we have Fola Osu/Marc Kurella with 35 points. They certainly could have finished much higher if they should not have had all that technical problems at the four former rounds. Ninth place goes to Børge Haug/Glenn Wennerberg who, after their brilliant fourth place in Oslo, finished sixth at Alsdorf. They won 29 points. Tenth place of the EEC 2009 goes to Marcel Oosterling/Emily Kuipers and Henri van Gool, having finished eighth at Alsdorf, with 21.4 points. Björn van Campenhout/Kristof Huys scored their first fine result at Alsdorf, finishing seventh overall, one lap down from the sixth, despite the fact that they had to drive a NDW Lola weighting 47 grams, i.e. 15 grams more than the general average of all bodies at the start.
The 2009 Citation Cup was won by Marcel and Stefan Kuhn who won round four, but were beaten by Willy Godts/Marc Ausloos at the last round. Remco van Waaij and Louise Valkenborgh - having reached the top-3 in all five rounds - were second and Dirk Baele/Alex Vandenbempt who won two rounds were third. [JPVR]

After having won the 2008 Endurance World Championship Ralph Seif wins now also the 2009 Endurance European Championship. We see him here together with the series organisers JPVR and Raymond van Campenhout. PICTURE: Fola Osu.

Ramon Trimborn, Andre Linberg and Nick de Wachter lost the championship by a couple of metres after a gruelling combat  between Nick and Sven Manti, Ralph's team mate at Alsdorf

At Alsdorf there were two rounds for the Citation Cup. At round #4 the Corvette of Willy Godts/Marc Ausloos (a Seif/Fola set-up) and the Porsche of Stefan Kuhn/Marcel Kuhn (a Seif/Kuhn/Linberg set-up) were too strong for the rest of the field. Together they were pulling away, switching time by time from position. With one lap to go both cars were in the same lap, with the Corvette three quarters of a lap behind the Porsche, when suddenly the rear spoiler of the Corvette came off. Repairs cost two full laps, so Stefan Kuhn and Marcel Kuhn won their second round at the Citation Cup (at Herentals they already won round #3). For the Alsdorf race the Kuhn practiced over more than 7,000 laps! They had a fabulous car. Of the two young Marcel was considerably faster than his dad. Willy Godts/Marc Ausloos finished second at 3 laps. During the first half of the race Remco van Waaij/Louise Valkenborgh could follow the two leaders some four laps behind, but towards the final heats they definitively had to let go the two leading cars. There was a close combat for the fourth place among the Tafel Racing Ferrari's of Dirk Baele/Alex Vandenbempt - having started the race as leaders of the Citation Cup - and of Marko Salomaa/Arttu Salomaa/Atte Salomaa. Unfortunately the Belgian Ferrari run in troubles and recovered no more. Shortly after the Aston Martin DBR9 of Mark Huys/Gerry de Roeck could undo its arrears on the Finnish Ferrari, passing the Salomaas, and going after the scalp of the other Aston Martin That however was too much an effort and they finished as fourth. The Risi Ferrari F430 GT2 of Quinten Vanspauwen/Bart Gijsen was much more regular than at Herentals, but the car was ways too heavy and lacked speed. Both racers improved a lot, now still a lighter car and they can compete with equal arms.

At the last round we saw again a struggle between the Corvette and the little Porsche, but now the Germans could no longer follow the yellow Corvette. With two segments to go the Corvette had eleven rounds in hand over the Porsche. But then at once Willy Godts - having driven superbly up to then - was making such a lot of driving mistakes that he lost no less than eight laps in twenty minutes. It seemed as if the Corvette should be beaten again. At the last segment Mark Ausloos had to fight with young Marcel Kuhn. No one gave a dime for the Corvette's winning chances, especially as Ausloos, coming from 1/32nd plastic racing, was up to then slower than Godts, driving not fluently enough. But Ausloos is an excellent fighter and he surpassed himself in the fight with the Porsche. instead of loosing laps from Marcel Kuhn, he succeeded to pass him a couple of times, winning the race. Biggest surprise came from Gerry de Roeck realising with 8"792 the fastest lap of all Citation Cup cars. This time his Aston Martin DBR9, shared with Mark Huys, came five laps behind the Tafel Racing Ferrari F430 GT2 of the Salomaas. The Belgian Tafel Racing Ferrari suffered once more all kinds of troubles and finished as last.

Winners of the 2009 Citation Cup are Stefan Kuhn & Marcel Kuhn with 77 points, followed by Remco van Waaij (last year's winner) and Louise Valkenborgh with 66 points. At all five rounds they finished among the top-3. Third place went to the unlucky Dirk Baele & Alex Vandenbempt with 60 points.

4TH EEC/2ND CITATION CUP - March 28-29, 2009 - OSLO (N) - RPUND #4  [IOC LEVEL 2]

DE WACHTER/LINBERG/TRIMBORN  WITH SUPERIOR CAR

PIKI/SEIF LOOSE EEC LEAD FOR ONE POINT AFTER 71 LAPS IN THE PITS

On my way back from Oslo to Brussels I could make no other conclusion than that I was certainly not impressed by the Oslo meeting. First of all their was the track, absolutely not adapted to the fast cars we are racing in the prototype class. This track - too short, too small - is a real car killer. Last year there was much to do with the Willy Heerwegh track at Wezembeek-Oppem. That track, however, is long enough and counts 8 lanes. It was also a car killer, so we decided not to return to the Heerwegh track. Unfortunately Glenn Wennerberg and Børge Haug have no space for a longer and wider track, but I don't believe that in 2010 we'll come back to this track, especially as there is an excellent wooden 8-laner in Helsinki.
Raymond van Campenhout and I went to Oslo to do there the race direction. But once in Oslo we had nothing to say, they needed no race direction, they did it themselves, just as if they were no racers at all. No penalties were given for shouting to the marshals. Concourse was not judged like we usually do. This is Børge's place and at Børge's place nobody except he has something to say. We were unhappy with such situation, conflicting with the elementary IMCA rules.
Then there was the situation with Thursday practice. For most racers this little track was completely new. Those who arrived on Saturday morning were informed that other than local racers could already practice the whole ... Thursday. Among them Nick de Wachter and his Flavio boys. When I wondered if they were not supposed to be at school, they told me that they got free from school duties to go to Oslo. Strange schools in Germany. Of IMCA's ideal of fair racing nothing was seen in Norway. At least we could imagine that Børge should have cleaned the track after the illegal Thursday practice, so that conditions on the cleaned track were similar for all racers. That - later done by Tamar Nelwan at the Alsdorf meeting - was simply omitted. If we accept free practice on Thursday we forget that several racers have a regular job and that not everybody can be in place two days before the race.

The race itself was certainly interesting with Christian Schnitzler & Alexander Ortmann realising the pole position at the qualifications, ahead over the Audi R10 TDI of Michael Niemas & Christoph Kremer and Nick de Wachter, Andre Linberg & Ramon Trimborg with their beautiful black Acura. The three other teams qualifying for the main heat were those of Haug/Wennerberg, Piki/Seif and Fola/Kurella. That implied that such teams as Inäbnit/Fisher/Hirt, Oosterling/Kuipers/Van Gool and Riehl/Schüler/ Schluckebier had all to go to the second heat. Already at the qualifications it was obvious that the championship leaders didn't show with a good car: their car was much too slow, suffering from a poor road holding.
The heat with the four slowest cars was easily won by the yellow Lola B06/10 AER of the new comers Charles Dresberg (N)/Glenn Bråten (N)/Tom Solberg (N), having been initially involved in a close combat with the Danish RS Spyder of Gorm Norgaard (DK)/Søren Thompsen (DK)/Morten Iversen (DK). Later in the races the Danes had to let go the yellow Lola and they were attacked by the black/white/orange Lola of Kristof Huys/Björn van Campenhout/Patrick Blondiau. They came five laps short for the third place in their heat. The #15 Acura of Gert Klinge/Dirk Baele/Henrik Hassager was fast when it went, but was more into the pits than on the track. In the second heat, driven by Günther Riehl, the #1 Audi was initially fast, leading the field, but up from the second segment the car had at once no more speed and dropped from the first to the last place. Astonishing was the excellent performance of Pål Hanson's team. For the first time since the 2006 Barcelona Worlds a Danish car could compete for the better places. The car, shared with Mark Sander & Robert Castella was at a given moment leading the fluo green Swiss Acura and the Andretti Green Acura, but in the latter stages of the race Marcel Oosterling/Emily Kuipers/Henri van Gool could take the lead, holding Gabe Inäbnit/Gaby Fischer/Michi Hirt 13 laps behind. In the overall standings those car were classified as fifth and sixth. Big progress was made by Rolf K. Anderson and his team mates
Roy Bråten and Petter Krogstie. They finished third of the heat and a fine eighth overall!  The Danish car finished fourth of the heat and ninth overall.

The last heat was undoubtedly the most interesting of the three. Already after five minutes the situation was clear. Pole sitters Alexander Ortmann/Christian Schnitzler were unable to keep up with the De Ferran Acura whilst Piki/Seif were struggling in third and fourth position with the Audi R10 TDI of Niemas/Kremer and with the Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP of Fola/Kurella. Already at the end of the first segment the Peugeot dropped seriously in the standings, from fourth to sixth, being victim of several technical woes. But also the Piki/Seif RS Spyder was in trouble, victim of poor braids contact. The car dropped into fifth position, behind the Dyson RS Spyder of Haug/Wennerberg, loosing its first 23 laps into the pits. For the Peugeot the situation was a pure catastrophe, falling back into twelfth overall position after the second segment. Meanwhile Piki/Seif were on their way back to the fourth place. Nine laps behind Borge/Wennerberg, they had good chances to finish with 10 IOC-points, also 10 less than NDW & Co, but as they have a 15 points advance after three rounds, they hold 5 points in hand, enough to win the championship by finishing second if NDW wins also the last round.
But just after the start of the third segment the Seif RS Spyder suffered again from connection problems. The car had to go into the pits, the body came off and only 53 laps later the car rejoined the race, in twelfth position overall, just behind the Fola Peugeot. In front we saw a boring race with the NDW Acura pulling away from the RS Spyder of Ortmann/Schnitzler, whilst Niemas/Kremer were too far behind the RS Spyder to have access to the second place, and too far ahead of Haug/Wennerberg to loose their third place.  No, the thrill of the race turned around the question if yes or no Haug/Wennerberg could achieve more than 2473 laps to beat Oosterling/Kuipers/Van Gool for the fourth place overall. During a long time it appeared as if the Norwegians should fail to reach their goal, especially when their car had to come into the pits.  It seemed that their fight was hopeless, especially as it seemed that they should fail to achieve more than 2460 laps: the total of the Swiss team. However the fight of both Haug and Wennerberg was absolutely heroic. They realised what seemed completely impossible, nl. finishing with one lap more than the Dutch Acura. So they were fourth overall, their best result in international EEC racing.
When the race was eventually over NDW was proud to show that the weight of the used Acura body was, body holders included, only 23 grams. NDW clients had to race much heavier Acuras: Inäbnit a 32 gram body, Oosterling a 36 gram version and Klinge a 41 gram Acura. Among the Lolas the weight difference was even higher: 24 gram for the youngest Lola of Charles Dresberg against 47 gram for the old Lola of Kristof Huys. What happened? Helped by Bernd Huvendiek NDW detected a "new" carbon fibre compound, as strong as the older compound, but much lighter. It's the same fine compound which Fola Osu uses already one year on his ultra light Peugeot and other bodies. After the race their was among racers using NDW bodies a strong commotion: they refused to understand why Nick himself used much lighter bodies than the ones he sold to his costumers. Nick's defence is that he had no time to change all bodies in time. The unequal weights were the start of a heavy controversy with NDW as he was unable to manufacture bodies with equal weight. That he discovered a robust but lighter compound was not accepted as an excuse.
Shortly after the race Piki decided to enter no longer the last round. He and others were very unhappy with the unequal body weights. But also the fact that Haug accepted that several racers could already practice two days before the race - what's openly against the true spirit of the rules - contributed to the retirement of other racers such as Günther Riehl, Frank Schüler, etc. For the 2010 EEC stable rules for manufacturers must be developed, stipulating that during the full season they have to use the SAME compound for their manufactured bodies. There will also come new rules concerning licensed bodies and licensed decals. The Austrian case of a young guy having made unlicensed Red Bull bodies and having been condemned to a € 150,000 has opened the eyes of several small manufacturers. IMCA has to help them what well and what not can be released. [JPVR]

On Friday there was a race for fun with old VW cars. Glenn Wennerberg showed with a superb model car, winning concourse.

4TH EEC/2ND CITATION CUP - JANUARY 17-18, 2009 - HERENTALS (B) - SURVEY

"PIKI" MAKES COME-BACK TROUGH BIG DOOR

He & Seif win 3 rounds - Baele/Vandenbempt win twice at Citation Cup

January 20, 2009 - The first meeting of the EEC 2009 was one of the best in my 40 years old career as international organiser. Indeed, the 2008 IMCA Worlds were disastrous due to the fact that - despite all agreements - no race director showed. I understand Jean-Marie Tillén very well that he had absolutely no mare need to function as race director after at Alsdorf 2008 he was seriously aggressed by a racer no worth to be called so. But he could have contacted us in time. At the 2008 IMCA Worlds several cars were irregular but we had nobody to check them. I thus wished above all to erase that painful experience. That is what happened at Herentals this week-end. The cars were splendid, the racers were a cream, there was no tension at all, the program could be followed without the smallest pressure. In one word: it was a very successful event.
Of the racers having subscribed only one team was missing, nl. the Audi team of Günther Riehl. He sent me on Friday the following mail:
Hello Jean-Pierre, I'm sorry, but i couldn't start at Herentals for reasons of a heavy influenza. Until yesterday in the evening i had the hope that things are getting better, but then i had to accept, that I'm not able go on vacancies. I wish you a nice and thrilling events, hopefully see you in Oslo. Günther.
At the Citation Cup one team was missing, that of Fernando Corral, but this pre-dictable absence was compensated by the presence of the Finnish team of Arttu and Marko Salomaa, no more seen in international competition since the 2007 IMCA Worlds. Among the individual racers Peter Krogstie (N), Kai Torgvær (N) and Christof Kremer (D) (ill) were absent, whilst Stany Trebulak (B) - also ill - was replaced by Remco van Waaij (NL) (the winner of the 2008 Citation Cup), and whilst Wim Doveren (NL) was replaced by good old Alex Vandenbempt (having made his first IMCA entrance in 1985). In total 56 racers of 10 different countries started. Qualitatively it was one of the best entry fields ever: only Kai Kivekäs (SF) and Dani "Giese" Gonzalez (E) were missing to make it complete. But with "Piki", Nick de Wachter, Philipp Kremer, Michael Niemas, Christian Schnitzler, Alexander Ortmann, Ralph Seif, Gabe Inäbnit, Fola Osu and Børge Haug we found 10 world champions at the start.

CONCOURSE & TECHNICAL CONTROL
Interesting was that the three young revelations of the German SLP Championship were all three at the start. Andre Linberg built the chassis for Nick de Wachter's Acura and was joined in Nick's team by Ramon Triborn. The other SLP revelation, Marc Kurella, teamed with Fola Osu. It was a pleasure to see Mqartin Borch (DK) back after more than two years of absence. Although the Danish team is not already at the same height of the German top teams, a remarkable progress was made. At any rate the gap with the top teams is much narrower than it was in the past.
Before the start we noticed several spectators being themselves excellent racers. Among them Anne Grundel (NL). Racing was already on when Tamar Nelwan (NL) - the organiser of the EEC 2008 - and Willem Kloppenburg (NL) showed. Surprised by the qualitatively very strong entry field and by the remarkable beauty of the cars, they wished to start with some of the existing teams, but no places were still free.
There was officially no concourse scheduled, but most of the cars were such a beauty that just before the qualifications a concourse contest was organised with JPVR, Nick de Wachter, Fola Osu, Michael Niemas and Gabriel Inäbnit as judges. The car of Nick de Wachter could have won, should it had light covers. But the Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP of Fola Osu scored the best (and it was really the most beautiful of all cars). The fluo green Acura ARX-01B could also have won, but unfortunately Gabe used rubber front flaps which could not be well painted in fluo. Another splendid car was the Mexican Acura ARX-01B as made by Gert Klinge. Unfortunately a piece of the front spoiler was broken during free practice, what cost the car several points. The Audi R10 TDI of Michael Niemas deserved much more points, just as the Merksteijn Porsche RS Spyder of Mike Wagner. But there were so many superb cars that the voting was far from easy.
An accurate technical control was made by race director Theo Vanginderhuysen assisted by Raymond van Campenhout. No irregular cars were found except for the ground clearance of one or two cars. Among the prototypes the #7 Penske Porsche and the #66 Acura had the lowest weight: 169 grams. Among the GTs the Corvette had with its 220 grams a serious overweight of nearly 30 grams. It may be a miracle that Marc Ausloos could win a segment with such overweighted car. [JPVR]

Race direction at Herentals was in hands of Theo Vanginderhuysen (right), whilst organiser Raymond van Campenhout (left) helped him at scrutinizing.

Podium after ROUND #1: f.l.t.r. Ramon Trimborn/Andre Linberg and Nick de Wachter (having finished as second), "Piki" van Rossem/Ralph Seif (the winners), and Michael Niemas/ Philipp Kremer (having finished as third).

ROUND #1: PORSCHE RS SPYDER & FERRARI F430 GT
At the Qualfications the Penske Porsche of the reigning world champion Christian Schnitzler realised a sharp 7"070, being faster than the Audi R10 TDI of Philipp Kremer. But then the other Penske Porsche, in hands of Ralph Seif realised 7"034, good for the pole position. The De Ferran Acura of Nick de Wachter started as last but failed with 7"090 to improve the best time. Among the GT cars Gerry de Roeck caused a stir, realising the pole in 7"535 with the Aston Martin DBR9, beating the Tafel Racing Ferrari F430 GT of Dirk Baele by 2/1000nds of a second.
Immediately after the start the two Penske Porsches were pulling away from the rest of te field, but shortly before midrace the Schnitzler/Ortmann Porsche suffered from a transmission problem, dropping in the standings. The Peugeot 908 of Fola Osu and the astonishing fast Marc Kurella lost serious time in the pits with a broken (carbon) guide holder and had to rejoin the track in the very last position. In GT the Baele/Vandenbempt Tafel Racing Ferrari had no problems to pass, shortly after the start, the Aston Martin DBR9 of Mark Huys/De Roeck. The last car was seriously attacked by the Aston Martin Vantage of Valkenborgh/Van Waaij, but could maintain its second place until the finish.
Among the prototypes the Intersport Lola B06/10 AER of Huys/Van Campenhout/ Blondiau - good for a 7"0 at the November practice - suffered from all kinds of problems, dropping in the standings to the last prototype. Last year Huys and Van Campenhout finished still as runner-up at the EEC 2008. In front the Penske Porsche of "Piki"/Seif was pulling away from the rest of the field. On the fast lanes Seif made the gap, on the two slowest lanes "Piki" raced as a clockwork, realising nearly all his laps with less than 3/100ths of difference. The Acura of De Wachter/Linberg/Trim-borg failed to make the gap narrower and was blown away by "Piki" in the last segment. The car finished second, 16 laps behind the winners. The Audi R10 TDI finished as third after renewed transmission bothers for the second Penske Porsche, finishing fourt. Very good performance of the too heavy Dyson Porsche of Hugo Dekker/Desmond Dekker/Arthur de Kok, letting the Norwegian sister car of Haug and Wennerberg 16 laps behind. [JPVR]

CITATION CUP Podium after ROUND #1: Marc Huys/Gerry de Roeck (2nd), Alex Vandenbempt/Dirk Baele (winners), Louise Valkenborgh/Remco Van Waaij (3rd)

Podium after ROUND #2: f.l.t.r. Nick de Wachter/Andre Linberg/Ramon Trimborn (having finished as second), Ralph Seif/"Piki" van Rossem (the winners), and Gaby Fisher/Michi Hirt/Gabriel Inäbnit (having finished as third). It should be great if at Oslo and at Alsdorf other teams had such nice shirts as the Swiss team.

ROUND #2: PORSCHE WINS IN LMP & IN LMGT
At the second race Ralph Seif (Penske Porsche) pulled away from the rest of the field immediately after the start, realising continuously laps of 6.9. After 15 minutes he had an advance of already 9 laps over the Acura of Nick de Wachter & Co. The second Penske Porsche of Schnitzler/Ortmann ran immediately in big problems and the third one of Javier Checa/Victor Salinas deslotted too much in hands of Victor. For the third place there was a heavy fight among the Swiss Acura of Inäbnit/Fisher/Hirt, the Peugeot 908 of Osu/Kurella and the Audi R10 TDI of Niemas/Kremer. Those cars switched continuously places during the first half of the race. Especially Gabe Inäbnit was fast, following without any problem Nick de Wachter on the other Acura.
In the GT class the Ferrari of Baele/Vandenbempt lost valuable time in the pits and the Aston Martin Vantage of Valkenborgh/Van Waaij was setting the pace, followed by the Ferrari of Arttu and Marko Salomaa and the Porsche 997 GT3-RSR of Stefan and Marcel Kuhn. At mid-race Valkenborgh was leading. During the next segment Stefan Kuhn changed tyres in less than 4 laps, whilst all others lost 10 to 12 laps at tyre change. Then it appeared that Stefan had changed only one tyre, not both. So we found the Porsche 997 leading the GT class and increasing its advance segment after segment. With two segments to go Stefan Kuhn was obliged to pit once more and to change the two tyres. He did it - very well controlled - in less than 7 laps and could maintain his advance until the finish line. The Ferrari of Baele/Vandenbempt was coming back into second position, but had to replace a lost rear wing, dropping into fourth position. So the Aston Martin Vantage finished second in GT, the Finnish Tafel Racing Ferrari (having lost most of its nose) in third position. The Corvette of Godts/Ausloos - much too heavy - could win one segment in GT, was a while fourth in its class, but dropped towards the end of the race in sixth position. The Aston of Huys/De Roeck - still second at the first round - and the red Risi Ferrari of Gijsen and Vanspauwen were most of the race in the pits, just as the Intersport Lola of Huys/Van Campenhout/Blondiau among the prototypes. The other (green) Risi Ferrari of Blondiau/R. Kuhn was fast when it was on the track, but was more in the pits than on the track.
In front the Penske Porsche was just flying, setting in hands of "Piki" new records on the slowest lane and increasing its advance in the last stint when "Piki" realised ALL his laps in the 6.9 seconds. The Swiss Acura was very short to the second place, but failed by four laps. The Audi R10 TDI won the struggle against Fola's Peugeot 908 for the fourth place. Fine performance of Oosterling/Kuipers/Van Gool, finishing this second round in sixth position. [JPVR]

CITATION CUP Podium after ROUND #2: Remco van Waaij/Louise Valkenborgh (2nd), Marcel & Stefan Kuhn (winners), Marko & Arttu Salomaa (3rd)

Podium after ROUND #3: f.l.t.r. Nick de Wachter/Andre Linberg/Ramon Trimborn (having finished as second), Ralph Seif/"Piki" van Rossem (the winners), and Christian Schnitzler/Alexander Ortmann(having finished as third). On this podium we found no less than five world champions, having won among tem no less than 15 world championships!

ROUND #3: PENSKE PORSCHE AND TAFEL FERRARI WIN AGAIN
At the start of the third round everybody agrees that the venue of the three German youngsters of Slot-Ring - Ramon Trimborn, Marc Kurella and Andre Linberg - is a real win-win situation for model car racing. All three they are very fast and able to follow the best racers of the world. Unfortunately for them the Penske Porsche of Seif/"Piki" is so outstanding that they can only fight for the second place. Already at the first segment Seif realises nearly all his laps in 6"8, realising the fastest lap of the meeting in 6"802 (new track record). With the second Penske Porsche Alexander Ortmann and Christian Schnitzler realise a unique performance, driving the car at each lane during more than 950 laps at lap speeds oscillating within the 0.05 seconds. Among the other prototypes the Peugeot 908 of Osu/Kurella, the Dyson Porsche of Haug/Wennerberg and the Acura of De Wachter/Linberg/Trimborn switch continuously places. Shortly before mid-race Seif's Porsche is involved in a couple of collisions and is at once seriously slower. Especially Nick's Acura comes closer and closer being only at once 7 laps behind with one last segment to go (the difference was up to 18 laps after three segments!). But on blue "Piki" gives full evidence that he's completely back: he achieves ALL his laps between 6"901 and 6"915. Eventually he increases the advance of the Penske Porsche by 5 laps, to let the Slot-Ring Acura 12 laps behind on the second place. Osu/Kurella succeed to pass the Norwegian Porsche of Haug/Wennerberg and the Audi R10 TDI of Kremer/Niemas. They believe to have reached the podium with their Peugeot, but then it appears that the second Porsche of Schnitzler/Ortmann, having started in the previous heat, achieved more laps.
In GT there was a long combat between the Aston Martin Vantage of Valkenborgh/ Van Waaij and the Tafel Racing Ferrari of Baele/Vandenbempt. With three segments to go the Aston had still 15 laps in hand over the Ferrari, but in the one but last segment Louise Valkenborgh - too nervous - looses this advantage. Eventually the Aston will finish second, 8 laps down. Until mid-race the green Risi Ferrari of Blondiau and Raymond Kühn was continuously find among the top-3, but later the car suffered again all kinds of woes, to be passed by the Porsche 997 and the Finnish Tafel Racing Ferrari. The Audi R10 TDI of Günther Riehl could not start as its driver was ill. So we'll have to wait Oslo to see the car in action.   The Audi R10 TDI of Niemas/Philipp Kremer showed with the wrong number (#8 instead of #2; this should be corrected at Oslo and at Alsdorf).

The Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP of Fola Osu (NIG) & Marc Kurella (D) won concourse, but unfortunately organisers forgot the Concourse Trophy   The Intersport Lola B06/10 A.E.R. of Rolf K. Andersen (N) & Roy Bråten (N) suffered from the wrong body attachment

4TH EEC/2ND CITATION CUP - JANUARY 18, 2009 - HERENTALS (B) ROUND #3 [IOC LEVEL 2]

"PIKI"/RALPH SEIF WIN FOR THE THIRD TIME

Dirk Baele/Alex Vandenbempt win again, now Citation Cup round #3

This splendid Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP won, proie to the three races, concourse. Concourse was done by the best modelists being present and giving points. The Peugeot, assembled by Fola Osu won but unfortunately organisers forgot the trophy for concourse. The car had bad luck at the first round as a carbon guide holder was broken. So the Peugeot finished only tenth, implying that it had to start in the B-final at round #2. Superbly driven by Fola and his young team mate Marc Kurella, the car was fastest in that B Final, finishing fifth overall. So the Peugeot could start in round #3 at the A-final where it finished third. But as Schnitzler/Ortmann were faster in the B Final, the Peugeot was fourth overall.
