GIANOTTI-WIESEL TROPHY: THE LIGHTS, AN ESC CUP PROPOSAL

July 3, 1973: start of the Imola 300-kms with on the lead the Lola T292 BMW of Gérard Larousse, immediately followed by the #12 March 73S BMW of Cosmino Turizio, hiding the red #2 Abarth-Osella PA1 of Dieter Quester (A). The Austrian is followed by the DART Racing GRD S73 Ford of Scotland's Dave Walker and by the #11 March 73S BMW of Gabriele Serblin (I). Then follows the #5 Lola T292 Ford which Crowne Racing Team entered for Chris Craft (GB), the later winner of the European 2-Litre Sports Cars Championship. He precedes the #6 Red Rose Racing Chevron B23 Ford of John Burton.

At the ESC CUP the "lights" will be the second half of entered cars

In DSC racing it's a tradition that two races per event are organised. In the European version - the ESC Cup thus - one can make a distinction between Big Bangers and Lights. As "Big Bangers" for the ESC Cup one can opt for 1/24th copies of race cars having baan seen at the 1971 Interserie.  As "Lights" we propose 1/24th scale copies of cars having been seen at the 1973 European 2-Litre Sports Car Championship. That series was organised from 1970 thru 1975 and in 1978 and 1983. The famous 2-litre prototypes such as the Chevron B23, Lola T292, Abarth-Osella PA1 were really agile, ultra light, powerful, but had one major shortcoming: they were not reliable over long distances. We opt for 1973 as it went with the strongest entry field in the history of the series.
Contrarily to the Interserie, where the majority of the entrants came from Germany, the 1973 European 2-Litre Sports Cars Championship saw only a few Germans at the start. The reason was that there were no 2-litre Porsches available, able to compete with the fast British and Italian 2-litre prototypes. Such 2-litre cars as the Porsche 906 and Porsche 910 were obsolete in 1973. The rare German racers coming at the start of the series drove mainly the new GRD S73 which was imported by Jörg Obermoser.
As it is the intention of the ESC Cup that half of the entrants are Germans, other half non-German European racers, both of them will find cars close to their proper racing history. The Germans have "their" Big Banger Interserie, the non-Germans have "their" 2-Litre Lights.
Up to now the ESC Cup is an idea launched by
Jean-Philippe Ingels and Yannick Lefèbvre, the two students who did their stage in my company. They were very impressed by the superb cars seen at the DSC Cup and could not understand that this series went not after IOC points. They asked me if they could correct the IOC list by introducing DSC results. AS they gave me good arguments to do so, I accepted their proposal. As their knowledge of the history of autosport goes - except for F1, Canam, Interserie and Le Mans - not further than to somewhere 1998, they asked me if I could make a similar page as for the 1971 Interserie for the Lights. It's the web page which I present here.
Jean-Philippe and Yannick stay until mid-April with us. I asked them to negotiate with Matthias Parke - the founder of the DSC Cup - and to finalise a good deal before they quit us to return to their books. They are real diplomats, whilst I am anything except a diplomat. In the short time they were with us they did a superb job. They too convinced me that my attitude versus NDW and his OEPS series was completely wrong. The whole problem will be how the web site will be continued once they are gone. Mid-April I start my doctoral dissertation, and I have absolutely nobody to continue the IMCA web-site. Perhaps Dirk Baele can continue it? Let's wait and see.  [JPVR]

I wish that the ESC Cup will be closely linked to the late Franco Gianotti, who passed away in 2002. Perhaps it could be a good idea to speak in the years to come about the Gianotti-Wiesel Cup. So we can commemorate two great racers who did a lot for the promotion of model car racing in Europe. Stephan Wiesel, who was an exceptional builder of superb slot-racing bodies, passed away on December 15, 2007, when he was driven a slot-car in North-Germany.
Racing classic cars was introduced by Dieter Jens
who launched at the end of the 1990s his famous Le Mans Challenge. In North-Germany Matthias Parke launched around the same moment races with classic cars for the local clubs in the neighbourhood of Hamburg. Later the format of that type of racing was exported to the rest of Germany, becoming since 2003 the DSC Cup. Now it's time to export the format to whole Europe under the form of the ESC Cup. [I.Y.]
