1964 TOUR DE FRANCE AUTOMOBILE: THE MODEL CAR VERSION - Dec 28

Survey of the race results of the 16 selected GT cars

Among the 61 GT cars, having entered the 1964 Tour de France Automobile, I selected 16 cars, among them the top-9 finishers. Those 16 cars will dispute at my farewell race the model car version of the 1964 TdF at scale 1/24th. The only reason that the car having finished 10th - Rob Slotemaker's Triumph Spitfire GT6 LM - is not among the 16 is that there exists no model car version at scale 1/24th of this car. Many thanks if someone could make the mole of it!
The 16 cars are actually collector's items at the highest standards. They represent a sales value of € 58,789,000. Since 1964 several of those cars had a turbulent own life. One of them, the Ferrari 250 GTO with chassis 4153 GT - the winning car - lay 16 years (1970-1986) in a garage in the Paris suburbs on request of the French customs people. Another, the Ferrari 250 GTO with chassis 5095 GT, was used from 1964 thru 1974 by the ACO for their ... driver's school. At a given moment it was equipped with the cheap rear lights of a ... Ford Cortina GT. Still another - the Ferrari 250 GTO with chassis 4757 GT was confiscated in 1987 by the ... FBI which let it be sold at a public auction. Most of the 16 cars, having been all 16 built in Europe, are now in hands of American collectors.
One of the Ferraris GTO was sold in 1989 to a Japanese buyer at a price of $ 10,000,000! It was the period that the most unbelievable prices were paid for collector's cars. I myself paid in 1989 at the Monaco auction $ 3,750,000 for a Filipinetti Ferrari 512S which later appeared to be ... a false one (despite the fact that the auction house gave me a certificate attesting that it was an original car!!!). For a Ferrari 250 SWB I paid $ 2,650,000 in 1990.
If one looks at the results obtained with the cars in competition, one is perhaps wondering that the OA wins are rather small. However, one has to keep in mind that those cars had to fight against much lighter, more powerful, and lighter prototypes. Nevertheless the 16 cars were good for 26 OA wins.
Most of those cars were raced as well at speed circuits, as at hill-climbs and in rallies. It were typical all-rounders. When they were not raced, one saw them on the public roads. Of those cars the Shelby Cobra Daytonas and the Ferraris 250 GTO had a top speed of more than 300 kph (262 kph for the Porsches 904 GTS, 223 kph for the Alfa Romeo TZ-1, 210 kph for the Lotus Elan 26R).
Not all extremely reputed GTO Ferraris were the start in Lille. Missing were Luigi Chinetti's 3387 GT (2nd at Sebring and 6th at Le Mans in 1962) 4219 GT (winner of the 1963 Daytona 3 hours), 5571 GT-64 (winner of the 1964 Daytona 2000 kms), and 5573 GT-64 (2nd at the ADAC 1000 kms on the Nürburgring), Ulf Norinder's 3445 GT, Stirling Moss's 3505 GT having won the 1962 TT, Jean Guichet's 3705 GT (2nd at Le Mans 1962), Swaters's 3757 GT (3rd at LM 1962) and 4293 GT (winner of the 1963 Spa 500 kms), David Piper's green 3767 GT (winner of the 1962 Kyalami 9 hours) and green 4491 GT (winner of the 1963 Kyalami 9 hours), John Mecom's 3987 GT having won the 1962 Paris 1000 kms and the Nassau TT.

In 1964 the car, in hands of the young Günther Klass, won two stages at the Tour de France Automobile: stage #6 (The col de Tourmalet hill-climb) and stage #8 (at the circcuit of Albi), twice ahead over all Ferraris 250 GTO.

In 1964, at the Tour de France, Christian Poirot will beat the two works Porsches at the Col de Bramont hill-climb (stage #2). He'll finish 5th OA.

In 1964, at the Tour de France, Robert Buchet won three stages at the wheel of this car: the Col d'Aubisque hill-climb (stage #7), the Chevalerie hill-climb (stage #11), and the Turini hill-climb (stage #15). He and Herbert Linge will finish 3rd OA.

With this car Bob Bondurant (USA) won the two first stages of the 1964 Tour de France: the sprint race at the Rheims circuit (stage #1) and the hikll-climb of the Col Bramont (stage #2). A broken gearbox at Rouen (stage #3), however, enforces the car to retire.

The car was originally supplied with a small radiator opening and circular brake cooling ducts outboard of the driving lights. A frontal accident by Pagliarini in 1962 resulted in a rebuilt nose with a wider radiator opening and the side-lights semi-recessed in the wing sides. The crash by Annie Soisbault de Montaigu at theMont-Ventoux hill-climb of 1965 resulted in the front end being rebuilt again. In 1984 Jess G. Pourret let the car being restripped to the bare metal in Modena, with all fatigued aluminium was replaced using original artisanal methods.

At the Tour de France Automobile 1964 the car was shared by marquis Philippe de Montaigu and Claude Dubois. The car suffered a zero parcours at Cognac (stage #5), dropped seriously in the standings, but made its come-back at later stages, to finish 8th in the GT-standings.

Although Jacques Swaters, of the Garage Francorchamps, entered 4 cars at the 1964 TdF. hope to win was rather small. Swaters has sold his famous 3757 GT, having finished 3rd at the 1962 Le Mans 24 hours and 3rd at the 1962 TdF to Guy Hansez (B). He also has no longer his 4293 GT, which won in 1963 the Spa 500 kms, since it was sold to America's Jack Nethercutt. The 4153 GT had won nothing before entering the 1964 TdF (however, the car was 4th OA at Le Mans 1963).
The 4153 GT was initially silver coloured with the French tricouleur stripe over the complete length. When Swaters bought the car back from Pierre Dumay the French stripes disappeared and were replaced by a broad yellow band running from the centre of the front wheel arches across the bonnet. When in 1970 the car returned from Spain to France it lay for 16 years in a lock-up garage in the Paris suburbs for problems with the French customs.

The 4153 GT Ferrari GTO won the 1964 TdF. It won 4 stages: Cognac (stage #5), the Minier HC (#9), Charade (€12) and Col de Braus (€17).

The 4399 GT of Maranello Concessionaires was until January 1965 (when colonel Ronnie Hoare sold the car) the most successful of all GTO Ferraris. Until then only the best British drivers had access to it.  When it came at the start of the 1964 TdF with such racers as Jo Siffert and David Piper it was the outspoken favourite.
Initially the car waqs a GTO-62 version, but it was the first GTO to be rebodied in 1964 by Scaglietti. The 1964 body was the short-roof style with built-in spoiler. It had a bonnet blister extending into the nose panel (initially a closed one, up from May 2 an open type for cold air introduction.

The 4399 GT, having done the Spa 500 kms, the Le Mans 24 hours, the Rheims 12 hours and the Tourist Trophy, came at the start of the 1964 TdF in total revisited shape, with lots of (untested) new parts. Mechanic John Miney remembers that the engine consumed too much air and was never top. At stage #5 (Le Mans) colonel Hoare let refuel the car on the start grid and it was disqualified just when it started going well.

The Scuderia SSS Repubblica di Venezia (I) bought in June 1963 the 4757 GT and entered it at the Le Mans 24 hours for Carlo Mario Abate and Fernando Tavano. The car was eliminated by accident. After an entry at the Trophées d'Auvergne at the Charade circuit Abate disputed three hill-climbs with the car. Its entry at the 1963 TdF ended in a retirement. Sold in 1964 to the Garage Francorchamps the car was entered for Boulanger at severall hill-climbs, at the Antwerp speed race, at the Spa 500 kilometres and at the Benelux Cup in Zandvoort, enough for 3 OA wins. Then Jacques Swaters entered the car at the 1964 Tour de France under the  banner of the Écurie Francorchamps. Since the 4757 performed as well on circuits as on hill-climbs, much was expected  from this car at the start in Lille.
In 1987 the car was confiscated in the States by the FBI and sold at a public auction, where Jacques Swaters bought it back.

The 4757 GT came at the start in Lille but never took the road after unexpected technical bothers

The Scuderia SSS Repubblica di Venezia (I) bought in JSeptember 1963 the 5095 GT as its second car and entered it in the Tour de France where it finished unexpectedly 2nd OA. In March 1964 the car was sold to the ACO, using it during 3 years for racing school duties. Pierre Bardinon bought it from ACO and restored it to original specs.

The 5095 GT had bad luck at the 1964 TdF when Tavano (himself from Le Mans) exploded at stage #5 on Le Mans his engine on passing the finish line as 4th of the stage.

The 5111 GT was the last GTO Ferrari built following the 1962 specs. The French shipowner Jean Guichet - at several occasions one of Enzo Ferrari's works drivers - bought the car in September 1963 and won with it, the same month, the 12th Tour de France Automobile.

The 1964 Tour de France started for Jean Guichet, winner of the previous edition really bad. Indeed at the Rheims circuit he has to change the 12 plugs of his car, loosing 17 minutes. Later he will never succeed undoing this handicap. He will win three stages: Albi (stage #10), Mont-Ventoux (stage #13) and Chamrousse (stage #16), but will finish as second OA.

It concerns the last of the 36 GTO Ferraris, and one of the 3 originally built with the 1964 body. It had the short roof, but without spoiler. The bonnet blister in the mid of the bonnet served as cold air induction. Officially the car was owned by Garage Franciorchamps (Jacques Swaters), but without the loyal sponsoring by Marquis Montaigu the car should never be entered in several of the most important endurance races of the 1964 season. It was one of the most reliable GTO Ferraris.

At the 1964 TdF the car was raced by Annie Soisbault-Montaigu and Nicoole Roure. A zero parcours at Le Mans made the car seriously drop-ping in the standings, but it made a briljant come-back. At the last sprint race at Le Mans Enzo Ferrari himself came to the pits. As he saw Jean Guichet attacking contnuously Lucien Bianchi he asked Swaters to give instructions to Bianchi to slow down, because he didn't want to loose both leading cars in a crash. So Annie Soisbault could catch the lead and hold it until the finish to win stage #14.

The Alfda Romeo TZ-1 was an excellent rally car and always good at hill-climbs. At speed races it missed with its 152 bhp the necessary power.
At the 1964 TdF Rolland took a bad start. However, he realised a splen-did come-back winning no less than 7 times the handicap stage (among them the 5 last ones).  The car finished 7th OA.
